महाभारतम् — ९.२६

संजय उवाच ।

दुर्योधनो महाराज सुदर्शश्चापि ते सुतः ।
हतशेषौ तदा संख्ये वाजिमध्ये व्यवस्थितौ ॥

M N Dutt Sanjaya said Duryodhana, O king and your Sudarsha, the only two of your children who were not killed, were at that time in the midst of the Kauravas cavalry.

९.२६.२

ततो दुर्योधनं दृष्ट्वा वाजिमध्ये व्यवस्थितम् ।
उवाच देवकीपुत्रः कुन्तीपुत्रं धनंजयम् ॥

M N Dutt Seeing Duryodhana in the midst of the cavalry, Krishna said to Dhananjaya, the son of Kunti:-"A large number of our enemies, relations that had received our protection, have been killed. There that best of Shini's race is returning, having taken Sanjaya captive.

९.२६.३

शत्रवो हतभूयिष्ठा ज्ञातयः परिपालिताः ।
गृहीत्वा संजयं चासौ निवृत्तः शिनिपुंगवः ॥

M N Dutt Seeing Duryodhana in the midst of the cavalry, Krishna said to Dhananjaya, the son of Kunti:-"A large number of our enemies, relations that had received our protection, have been killed. There that best of Shini's race is returning, having taken Sanjaya captive.

९.२६.४

परिश्रान्तश्च नकुलः सहदेवश्च भारत ।
योधयित्वा रणे पापान्धार्तराष्ट्रपदानुगान् ॥

M N Dutt Both Nakula and Sahadeva, O Bharata, are worn out having fought with the wretched। Dhartarashtras and their followers.

९.२६.५

सुयोधनमभित्यज्य त्रय एते व्यवस्थिताः ।
कृपश्च कृतवर्मा च द्रौणिश्चैव महारथः ॥

M N Dutt Those there, viz., Kripa and Kritavarman and the great car-warrior Ashvatthaman, have left Duryodhana's side and taken up their positions elsewhere.

९.२६.६

असौ तिष्ठति पाञ्चाल्यः श्रिया परमया युतः ।
दुर्योधनबलं हत्वा सह सर्वैः प्रभद्रकैः ॥

M N Dutt Having killed Duryodhana's soldiers, the beautiful Panchala prince is waiting there in the midst of the Prabhadrakas.

९.२६.७

असौ दुर्योधनः पार्थ वाजिमध्ये व्यवस्थितः ।
छत्रेण ध्रियमाणेन प्रेक्षमाणो मुहुर्मुहुः ॥

M N Dutt There, O Partha, Duryodhana is in the midst of his cavalry, with the umbrella held over his head and looking all around.

९.२६.८

प्रतिव्यूह्य बलं सर्वं रणमध्ये व्यवस्थितः ।
एनं हत्वा शितैर्बाणैः कृतकृत्यो भविष्यसि ॥

M N Dutt Having re-arranged the remnant of his army, he waits in the midst of his forces. Killing this one with your keen arrows you may achieve all your objects.

९.२६.९

गजानीकं हतं दृष्ट्वा त्वां च प्राप्तमरिंदम ।
यावन्न विद्रवन्त्येते तावज्जहि सुयोधनम् ॥

M N Dutt As long as these troops do not fly away seeing you in their midst and witnessing also the destruction of their elephant force, do you, O chastiser of foes, try to kill Duryodhana.

९.२६.१०

यातु कश्चित्तु पाञ्चाल्यं क्षिप्रमागम्यतामिति ।
परिश्रान्तबलस्तात नैष मुच्येत किल्बिषी ॥

M N Dutt Let somebody go to the Panchala prince and ask him to come here. The Kaurava troops are all exhausted. O sire, the sinful Duryodhana will never succeed in escaping.

९.२६.११

तव हत्वा बलं सर्वं संग्रामे धृतराष्ट्रजः ।
जितान्पाण्डुसुतान्मत्वा रूपं धारयते महत् ॥

M N Dutt Having killed a large number your soldiers in battle the son of Dhritarashtra looks highly delighted as if he believes that the Pandavas have been defeated.

९.२६.१२

निहतं स्वबलं दृष्ट्वा पीडितं चापि पाण्डवैः ।
ध्रुवमेष्यति संग्रामे वधायैवात्मनो नृपः ॥

९.२६.१३

एवमुक्तः फल्गुनस्तु कृष्णं वचनमब्रवीत् ।
धृतराष्ट्रसुताः सर्वे हता भीमेन मानद ।
यावेतावास्थितौ कृष्ण तावद्य न भविष्यतः ॥

९.२६.१४

हतो भीष्मो हतो द्रोणः कर्णो वैकर्तनो हतः ।
मद्रराजो हतः शल्यो हतः कृष्ण जयद्रथः ॥

M N Dutt Bhishma has been killed, Drona has been killed, Karna has been killed, Shalya, the king of the Madras, has been killed and Jayadratha also, O Krishna, has been killed.

९.२६.१५

हयाः पञ्चशताः शिष्टाः शकुनेः सौबलस्य च ।
रथानां तु शते शिष्टे द्वे एव तु जनार्दन ।
दन्तिनां च शतं साग्रं त्रिसाहस्राः पदातयः ॥

M N Dutt Only five hundred cavalry constitute the army of Shakuni the son of Subala. Only two hundred still remain, of cars, O Janarddana. Of elephants the only remnant is a hundred and of foot only three thousand.

९.२६.१६

अश्वत्थामा कृपश्चैव त्रिगर्ताधिपतिस्तथा ।
उलूकः शकुनिश्चैव कृतवर्मा च सात्वतः ॥

M N Dutt There remain also Ashvatthaman and Kripa and the king of the Trigartas and Uluka and Shakuni and Kritavarman of the Satwata race.

९.२६.१७

एतद्बलमभूच्छेषं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य माधव ।
मोक्षो न नूनं कालाद्धि विद्यते भुवि कस्यचित् ॥

M N Dutt These, O Madhava, are the remnant of Duryodhana's army. Truly no body will escape from death.

९.२६.१८

तथा विनिहते सैन्ये पश्य दुर्योधनं स्थितम् ।
अद्याह्ना हि महाराजो हतामित्रो भविष्यति ॥

९.२६.१९

न हि मे मोक्ष्यते कश्चित्परेषामिति चिन्तये ।
ये त्वद्य समरं कृष्ण न हास्यन्ति रणोत्कटाः ।
तान्वै सर्वान्हनिष्यामि यद्यपि स्युरमानुषाः ॥

M N Dutt Even if they be superhuman beings, O Krishna! I shall yet kill all those warriors today if only they do not fly away from the battlefield.

९.२६.२०

अद्य युद्धे सुसंक्रुद्धो दीर्घं राज्ञः प्रजागरम् ।
अपनेष्यामि गान्धारं पातयित्वा शितैः शरैः ॥

M N Dutt Worked up with wrath in today's battle, I shall, by killing the prince of Gandhara with my keen arrows, remove that sleeplessness which the king has suffered from for a long time.

९.२६.२१

निकृत्या वै दुराचारो यानि रत्नानि सौबलः ।
सभायामहरद्द्यूते पुनस्तान्याहराम्यहम् ॥

M N Dutt I shall regain all those valuable properties which Subala's wicked son won from us at the gambling match.

९.२६.२२

अद्य ता अपि वेत्स्यन्ति सर्वा नागपुरस्त्रियः ।
श्रुत्वा पतींश्च पुत्रांश्च पाण्डवैर्निहतान्युधि ॥

M N Dutt Hearing of the destruction of their husbands and sons at the hands of the Pandavas in battle, all the ladies of Hastinapur will cry.

९.२६.२३

समाप्तमद्य वै कर्म सर्वं कृष्ण भविष्यति ।
अद्य दुर्योधनो दीप्तां श्रियं प्राणांश्च त्यक्ष्यति ॥

M N Dutt Today, O Krishna, our task will be finished. Today Duryodhana shall be divorced from his prosperity and life.

९.२६.२४

नापयाति भयात्कृष्ण संग्रामाद्यदि चेन्मम ।
निहतं विद्धि वार्ष्णेय धार्तराष्ट्रं सुबालिशम् ॥

M N Dutt take the foolish of Dhritarashtra as dead, O Vrishni hero, if, O Krishna, he does not today fly away from the battle,

९.२६.२५

मम ह्येतदशक्तं वै वाजिवृन्दमरिंदम ।
सोढुं ज्यातलनिर्घोषं याहि यावन्निहन्म्यहम् ॥

M N Dutt You may son Those horses cannot bear the twang of my bow and the slaps of my palms. Proceed there, OKrishna, for I will kill them.

९.२६.२६

एवमुक्तस्तु दाशार्हः पाण्डवेन यशस्विना ।
अचोदयद्धयान्राजन्दुर्योधनबलं प्रति ॥

M N Dutt Thus accosted by Pandu's son of great mental strength, the Dasarha heroe urged his horses, O king, towards Duryodhana's detachment.

९.२६.२७

तदनीकमभिप्रेक्ष्य त्रयः सज्जा महारथाः ।
भीमसेनोऽर्जुनश्चैव सहदेवश्च मारिष ।
प्रययुः सिंहनादेन दुर्योधनजिघांसया ॥

M N Dutt Beholding that force, three great carwarriors prepared themselves for striking it, for Bhimasena and Arjuna and Sahadeva, O sire, in a body, proceeded against it with loud leonine roars in order to kill Duryodhana.

९.२६.२८

तान्प्रेक्ष्य सहितान्सर्वाञ्जवेनोद्यतकार्मुकान् ।
सौबलोऽभ्यद्रवद्युद्धे पाण्डवानाततायिनः ॥

M N Dutt Beholding those three warriors rushing quickly together with uplifted bows, Subala's son proceeded against the Pandavas.

९.२६.२९

सुदर्शनस्तव सुतो भीमसेनं समभ्ययात् ।
सुशर्मा शकुनिश्चैव युयुधाते किरीटिना ।
सहदेवं तव सुतो हयपृष्ठगतोऽभ्ययात् ॥

M N Dutt Your son Sudarshana rushed against Bhimasena. Susharman and Shakuni met with Kiritin. Your son Duryodhana on horse back proceeded against Sahadeva.

९.२६.३०

ततो ह्ययत्नतः क्षिप्रं तव पुत्रो जनाधिप ।
प्रासेन सहदेवस्य शिरसि प्राहरद्भृशम् ॥

M N Dutt Then your son, O king, with great speed and care, forcibly struck Sahadeva's head with a lance.

९.२६.३१

सोपाविशद्रथोपस्थे तव पुत्रेण ताडितः ।
रुधिराप्लुतसर्वाङ्ग आशीविष इव श्वसन् ॥

M N Dutt Thus struck by your son, Sahadeva sat down on his car, all his limbs being covered with blood and himself breathing like a snake.

९.२६.३२

प्रतिलभ्य ततः संज्ञां सहदेवो विशां पते ।
दुर्योधनं शरैस्तीक्ष्णैः संक्रुद्धः समवाकिरत् ॥

M N Dutt Reigning his consciousness then, O king, Sahadeva, in anger, covered Duryodhana with keen shafts.

९.२६.३३

पार्थोऽपि युधि विक्रम्य कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ।
शूराणामश्वपृष्ठेभ्यः शिरांसि निचकर्त ह ॥

M N Dutt Kunti's son Dhananjaya, otherwise called Partha, displaying his prowess, sundered the heads of many brave warriors on horse back.

९.२६.३४

तदनीकं तदा पार्थो व्यधमद्बहुभिः शरैः ।
पातयित्वा हयान्सर्वांस्त्रिगर्तानां रथान्ययौ ॥

M N Dutt Indeed, Partha, with many arrows, destroyed that (cavalry). Having. killed all the horses, he then proceeded against the cars of the Trigartas.

९.२६.३५

ततस्ते सहिता भूत्वा त्रिगर्तानां महारथाः ।
अर्जुनं वासुदेवं च शरवर्षैरवाकिरन् ॥

M N Dutt Thereat the great car warriors of the Trigartas, in a body, covered Arjuna and Vasudeva with showers of arrows.

९.२६.३६

सत्यकर्माणमाक्षिप्य क्षुरप्रेण महायशाः ।
ततोऽस्य स्यन्दनस्येषां चिच्छिदे पाण्डुनन्दनः ॥

M N Dutt Assailing Satyakarman with a razor-headed arrow, the illustrious son of Pandu, sundered his antagonist's car-shafts.

९.२६.३७

शिलाशितेन च विभो क्षुरप्रेण महायशाः ।
शिरश्चिच्छेद प्रहसंस्तप्तकुण्डलभूषणम् ॥

M N Dutt With another razor-headed arrow, O lord whetted on stone, that illustrious hero, smiling cut off his antagonist's head crown adorned with a golden.

९.२६.३८

सत्येषुमथ चादत्त योधानां मिषतां ततः ।
यथा सिंहो वने राजन्मृगं परिबुभुक्षितः ॥

M N Dutt He next attacked Satyeshu before all the warriors, like hungry lion, O king, in the forest, attacking a deer.

९.२६.३९

तं निहत्य ततः पार्थः सुशर्माणं त्रिभिः शरैः ।
विद्ध्वा तानहनत्सर्वान्रथान्रुक्मविभूषितान् ॥

M N Dutt Having killed him, Partha struck Susharman with three arrows and then killed all those carwarriors bedecked with golden ornaments.

९.२६.४०

ततस्तु प्रत्वरन्पार्थो दीर्घकालं सुसंभृतम् ।
मुञ्चन्क्रोधविषं तीक्ष्णं प्रस्थलाधिपतिं प्रति ॥

M N Dutt He then proceeded with great force against Susharman the king of Prasthala, displaying his anger cherished for many long years.

९.२६.४१

तमर्जुनः पृषत्कानां शतेन भरतर्षभ ।
पूरयित्वा ततो वाहान्न्यहनत्तस्य धन्विनः ॥

M N Dutt Covering him, first, O foremost of Bharata's race, with a hundred arrows Arjuna then killed all the horses of that bowman,

९.२६.४२

ततः शरं समादाय यमदण्डोपमं शितम् ।
सुशर्माणं समुद्दिश्य चिक्षेपाशु हसन्निव ॥

M N Dutt Fixing then a strong arrow that resembled the rod of Yama, Partha, smiling, quickly shot it at Susharman, aiming it at him.

९.२६.४३

स शरः प्रेषितस्तेन क्रोधदीप्तेन धन्विना ।
सुशर्माणं समासाद्य बिभेद हृदयं रणे ॥

M N Dutt Shot by that bowman chaffing with wrath, that arrow reaching Susharman, passed through his heart in that battle.

९.२६.४४

स गतासुर्महाराज पपात धरणीतले ।
नन्दयन्पाण्डवान्सर्वान्व्यथयंश्चापि तावकान् ॥

M N Dutt O king, Susharman fell down dead on the earth, gladdening all the Pandavas and distressing all your warriors.

९.२६.४५

सुशर्माणं रणे हत्वा पुत्रानस्य महारथान् ।
सप्त चाष्टौ च त्रिंशच्च सायकैरनयत्क्षयम् ॥

M N Dutt Having killed Susharman in that battle, Partha then, with his arrow, killed the five and thirty sons of that king, all of whom were great car-warriors.

९.२६.४६

ततोऽस्य निशितैर्बाणैः सर्वान्हत्वा पदानुगान् ।
अभ्यगाद्भारतीं सेनां हतशेषां महारथः ॥

M N Dutt Killing next all the followers, of Susharman with his keen arrows, the great car-warrior Arjuna proceeded against the remnant of the Bharata army.

९.२६.४७

भीमस्तु समरे क्रुद्धः पुत्रं तव जनाधिप ।
सुदर्शनमदृश्यं तं शरैश्चक्रे हसन्निव ॥

M N Dutt In that battle, filled with rage, O king, Bhima covered Sudarshana with his arrows.

९.२६.४८

ततोऽस्य प्रहसन्क्रुद्धः शिरः कायादपाहरत् ।
क्षुरप्रेण सुतीक्ष्णेन स हतः प्रापतद्भुवि ॥

M N Dutt Filled with rage, the son of Pandu, smiling, cut off his antagonist's head with a sharp razorheaded arrow. The prince fell down dead on the earth.

९.२६.४९

तस्मिंस्तु निहते वीरे ततस्तस्य पदानुगाः ।
परिवव्रू रणे भीमं किरन्तो विशिखाञ्शितान् ॥

M N Dutt Upon the fall of that (Kuru) hero, his followers encircled Bhima in that battle, making a downpour of whetted arrows.
