महाभारतम् — ९.१

जनमेजय उवाच ।

एवं निपातिते कर्णे समरे सव्यसाचिना ।
अल्पावशिष्टाः कुरवः किमकुर्वत वै द्विज ॥

M N Dutt Janamejaya said On Karna being thus killed by Savyasachin what did the sinall remnant of the Kurt army do?

उदीर्यमाणं च बलं दृष्ट्वा राजा सुयोधनः ।
पाण्डवैः प्राप्तकालं च किं प्रापद्यत कौरवः ॥

M N Dutt Seeing the (Pandava) army elated with energy how did the king Suyodhana act towards them befitting the occasion?

९.१.३

एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं तदाचक्ष्व द्विजोत्तम ।
न हि तृप्यामि पूर्वेषां शृण्वानश्चरितं महत् ॥

M N Dutt Describe it, О foremost of the twice-born. I wish to hear it. I am never satiated with hearing of the great feats of my forefathers.

वैशंपायन उवाच ।

९.१.४

ततः कर्णे हते राजन्धार्तराष्ट्रः सुयोधनः ।
भृशं शोकार्णवे मग्नो निराशः सर्वतोऽभवत् ॥

M N Dutt Vaishampayana said After the destruction of Karna, O king, Dhritarashtra's son Suyodhana was immersed in a sea of grief and beheld despair on all sides.

९.१.५

हा कर्ण हा कर्ण इति शोचमानः पुनः पुनः ।
कृच्छ्रात्स्वशिबिरं प्रायाद्धतशेषैर्नृपैः सह ॥

M N Dutt Exclaiming repeatedly "Oh Karna ! Oh Karna! he with difficulty reached his camp with the remaining kings on his side.

९.१.६

स समाश्वास्यमानोऽपि हेतुभिः शास्त्रनिश्चितैः ।
राजभिर्नालभच्छर्म सूतपुत्रवधं स्मरन् ॥

M N Dutt Although consoled by those chiefs with cogent arguments sanctioned by scriptures he could not enjoy peace of mind thinking of the death of the charioteer's son.

९.१.७

स दैवं बलवन्मत्वा भवितव्यं च पार्थिवः ।
संग्रामे निश्चयं कृत्वा पुनर्युद्धाय निर्ययौ ॥

M N Dutt Considering Destiny and Luck as allpowerful and determined upon fighting the king issued out again for battle.

९.१.८

शल्यं सेनापतिं कृत्वा विधिवद्राजपुंगवः ।
रणाय निर्ययौ राजा हतशेषैर्नृपैः सह ॥

M N Dutt Having appointed duly Shalya as the coihmander-in-chief, that foremost of kings, O king, went out for battle with the remaining chiefs.

९.१.९

ततः सुतुमुलं युद्धं कुरुपाण्डवसेनयोः ।
बभूव भरतश्रेष्ठ देवासुररणोपमम् ॥

M N Dutt Thereupon, O foremost of Bharatas a terrible encounter took place between Kurus and Pandavas like that between the celestials and Asuras.

९.१.१०

ततः शल्यो महाराज कृत्वा कदनमाहवे ।
पाण्डुसैन्यस्य मध्याह्ने धर्मराजेन पातितः ॥

M N Dutt Then, O king, having made a great onslaught in battle, Shalya, having lost a large number of his of his force, killed by Yudhishthira at mid-day.

९.१.११

ततो दुर्योधनो राजा हतबन्धू रणाजिरात् ।
अपसृत्य ह्रदं घोरं विवेश रिपुजाद्भयात् ॥

M N Dutt Thereupon having his allies slain king Duryodhana fled from the battlefield and was entered into a dreadful lake in fear of his enemies.

९.१.१२

अथापराह्णे तस्याह्नः परिवार्य महारथैः ।
ह्रदादाहूय योगेन भीमसेनेन पातितः ॥

M N Dutt Then on that afternoon causing the lake to be encircled by mighty warriors Bhimasena invited him for battle and killed him.

९.१.१३

तस्मिन्हते महेष्वासे हतशिष्टास्त्रयो रथाः ।
संरभान्निशि राजेन्द्र जघ्नुः पाञ्चालसैनिकान् ॥

M N Dutt After his destruction in that great battle three car warriors who were still alive, worked up with great anger, killed the Panchalas in night.

९.१.१४

ततः पूर्वाह्णसमये शिबिरादेत्य संजयः ।
प्रविवेश पुरीं दीनो दुःखशोकसमन्वितः ॥

M N Dutt Having left the camb next morning Sanjaya went to the Kuru capital depressed and laden with grief.

९.१.१५

प्रविश्य च पुरं तूर्णं भुजावुच्छ्रित्य दुःखितः ।
वेपमानस्ततो राज्ञः प्रविवेश निवेशनम् ॥

M N Dutt Having entered the city and raising up his arms in sorrows and trembling the charioteer entered the Palace of the king.

९.१.१६

रुरोद च नरव्याघ्र हा राजन्निति दुःखितः ।
अहो बत विविग्नाः स्म निधनेन महात्मनः ॥

M N Dutt Overwhelmed with grief, O foremost of men, he cried aloud, saying "Alas! O king, ruin has overtaken us all by the death of the great king.

९.१.१७

अहो सुबलवान्कालो गतिश्च परमा तथा ।
शक्रतुल्यबलाः सर्वे यत्रावध्यन्त पार्थिवाः ॥

९.१.१८

दृष्ट्वैव च पुरो राजञ्जनः सर्वः स संजयम् ।
प्ररुरोद भृशोद्विग्नो हा राजन्निति सस्वरम् ॥

९.१.१९

आकुमारं नरव्याघ्र तत्पुरं वै समन्ततः ।
आर्तनादं महच्चक्रे श्रुत्वा विनिहतं नृपम् ॥

M N Dutt Hearing of Duryodhana's death the entire city, O foremost of men, including even children bewailed from all sides.

९.१.२०

धावतश्चाप्यपश्यच्च तत्र त्रीन्पुरुषर्षभान् ।
नष्टचित्तानिवोन्मत्ताञ्शोकेन भृशपीडितान् ॥

M N Dutt Pressed down with sorrow and be wildered men and women were seen running about like mad people.

९.१.२१

तथा स विह्वलः सूतः प्रविश्य नृपतिक्षयम् ।
ददर्श नृपतिश्रेष्ठं प्रज्ञाचक्षुषमीश्वरम् ॥

M N Dutt Entering the Royal Palace Sanjaya saw that great and highly wise king.

९.१.२२

दृष्ट्वा चासीनमनघं समन्तात्परिवारितम् ।
स्नुषाभिर्भरतश्रेष्ठ गान्धार्या विदुरेण च ॥

९.१.२३

तथान्यैश्च सुहृद्भिश्च ज्ञातिभिश्च हितैषिभिः ।
तमेव चार्थं ध्यायन्तं कर्णस्य निधनं प्रति ॥

९.१.२४

रुदन्नेवाब्रवीद्वाक्यं राजानं जनमेजय ।
नातिहृष्टमनाः सूतो बाष्पसंदिग्धया गिरा ॥

९.१.२५

संजयोऽहं नरव्याघ्र नमस्ते भरतर्षभ ।
मद्राधिपो हतः शल्यः शकुनिः सौबलस्तथा ।
उलूकः पुरुषव्याघ्र कैतव्यो दृढविक्रमः ॥

९.१.२६

संशप्तका हताः सर्वे काम्बोजाश्च शकैः सह ।
म्लेच्छाश्च पार्वतीयाश्च यवनाश्च निपातिताः ॥

M N Dutt The Madra-king Shalya has been killed as also Subala's son Shakuni and Uluka, the heroic son of Shakuni. The Samsaptakas, the Kambojas, the Shakas, the Mlechchhas, the mountaineers and the Yavanas have all been killed.

९.१.२७

प्राच्या हता महाराज दाक्षिणात्याश्च सर्वशः ।
उदीच्या निहताः सर्वे प्रतीच्याश्च नराधिप ।
राजानो राजपुत्राश्च सर्वतो निहता नृप ॥

M N Dutt The Easterners, the Southerners, the Northerners and the Westerners, O king, have all been killed.

९.१.२८

दुर्योधनो हतो राजन्यथोक्तं पाण्डवेन च ।
भग्नसक्थो महाराज शेते पांसुषु रूषितः ॥

९.१.२९

धृष्टद्युम्नो हतो राजञ्शिखण्डी चापराजितः ।
उत्तमौजा युधामन्युस्तथा राजन्प्रभद्रकाः ॥

९.१.३०

पाञ्चालाश्च नरव्याघ्राश्चेदयश्च निषूदिताः ।
तव पुत्रा हताः सर्वे द्रौपदेयाश्च भारत ।
कर्णपुत्रो हतः शूरो वृषसेनो महाबलः ॥

M N Dutt Your sons as also the five sons of Draupadi have been killed. The valiant and powerful son of Karna, Vrishasena, has also been killed.

९.१.३१

नरा विनिहताः सर्वे गजाश्च विनिपातिताः ।
रथिनश्च नरव्याघ्र हयाश्च निहता युधि ॥

M N Dutt All the men collected have been destroyed as also the elephants. All the car-warriors and horses have been slain in battle.

९.१.३२

किंचिच्छेषं च शिबिरं तावकानां कृतं विभो ।
पाण्डवानां च शूराणां समासाद्य परस्परम् ॥

९.१.३३

प्रायः स्त्रीशेषमभवज्जगत्कालेन मोहितम् ।
सप्त पाण्डवतः शेषा धार्तराष्ट्रास्तथा त्रयः ॥

९.१.३४

ते चैव भ्रातरः पञ्च वासुदेवोऽथ सात्यकिः ।
कृपश्च कृतवर्मा च द्रौणिश्च जयतां वरः ॥

M N Dutt They are the five Pandava brothers and Vasudeva and Satyaki and Kripa and Kritavarman and Drona's son, that foremost of victorious heroes.

९.१.३५

तवाप्येते महाराज रथिनो नृपसत्तम ।
अक्षौहिणीनां सर्वासां समेतानां जनेश्वर ।
एते शेषा महाराज सर्वेऽन्ये निधनं गताः ॥

M N Dutt These three car-warriors, are all that survive, O best of kings, of all the Akshauhinis collected on your side, O ruler of men!

९.१.३६

कालेन निहतं सर्वं जगद्वै भरतर्षभ ।
दुर्योधनं वै पुरतः कृत्वा वैरस्य भारत ॥

M N Dutt These are only living O monarch, the rest have died. Making Duryodhana and his hostility towards the Pandavas the cause, the whole world, it seems has been destroyed, O foremost of Bharata's race, by Time!"

९.१.३७

एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचः क्रूरं धृतराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः ।
निपपात महाराज गतसत्त्वो महीतले ॥

M N Dutt Vaishampayana sajd Hearing these cruel words, Dhritarashtra, that ruler of men, fell down, senses, O monarch, on the Earth.

९.१.३८

तस्मिन्निपतिते भूमौ विदुरोऽपि महायशाः ।
निपपात महाराज राजव्यसनकर्शितः ॥

M N Dutt As soon as the king fell down, the illustrious Vidura also, O king, afflicted with sorrow for the king's distress, fell down on Earth.

९.१.३९

गान्धारी च नृपश्रेष्ठ सर्वाश्च कुरुयोषितः ।
पतिताः सहसा भूमौ श्रुत्वा क्रूरं वचश्च ताः ॥

M N Dutt Gandhari also, O best of kings and all the Kuru ladies, suddenly fell down on the ground, hearing those cruel words.

९.१.४०

निःसंज्ञं पतितं भूमौ तदासीद्राजमण्डलम् ।
प्रलापयुक्ता महती कथा न्यस्ता पटे यथा ॥

M N Dutt All those royal persons remained lying on the ground, deprived of their consciousness and crying in delirium, like figures painted on a large piece of canvas.

९.१.४१

कृच्छ्रेण तु ततो राजा धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः ।
शनैरलभत प्राणान्पुत्रव्यसनकर्शितः ॥

M N Dutt Then king Dhritarashtra, that lord of Earth, afflicted with the misery of the death of his sons, slowly and with difficulty regained his life-breaths.

९.१.४२

लब्ध्वा तु स नृपः संज्ञां वेपमानः सुदुःखितः ।
उदीक्ष्य च दिशः सर्वाः क्षत्तारं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥

९.१.४३

विद्वन्क्षत्तर्महाप्राज्ञ त्वं गतिर्भरतर्षभ ।
ममानाथस्य सुभृशं पुत्रैर्हीनस्य सर्वशः ।
एवमुक्त्वा ततो भूयो विसंज्ञो निपपात ह ॥

९.१.४४

तं तथा पतितं दृष्ट्वा बान्धवा येऽस्य केचन ।
शीतैस्तु सिषिचुस्तोयैर्विव्यजुर्व्यजनैरपि ॥

९.१.४५

स तु दीर्घेण कालेन प्रत्याश्वस्तो महीपतिः ।
तूष्णीं दध्यौ महीपालः पुत्रव्यसनकर्शितः ।
निःश्वसञ्जिह्मग इव कुम्भक्षिप्तो विशां पते ॥

९.१.४६

संजयोऽप्यरुदत्तत्र दृष्ट्वा राजानमातुरम् ।
तथा सर्वाः स्त्रियश्चैव गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ॥

९.१.४७

ततो दीर्घेण कालेन विदुरं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
धृतराष्ट्रो नरव्याघ्रो मुह्यमानो मुहुर्मुहुः ॥
