महाभारतम् — ८.३२

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।

तथा व्यूढेष्वनीकेषु संसक्तेषु च संजय ।
संशप्तकान्कथं पार्थो गतः कर्णश्च पाण्डवान् ॥

M N Dutt Dhritarashtra said While armies thus encountered each other, did Partha, O Sanjaya, assail the Samsaptakas and Karna the Pandavas.

८.३२.२

एतद्विस्तरतो युद्धं प्रब्रूहि कुशलो ह्यसि ।
न हि तृप्यामि वीराणां शृण्वानो विक्रमान्रणे ॥

M N Dutt Skilled in narration as you are, recount at length the incidents of the battle to me. I am never satiated with listening to the accounts of the prowess of heroes.

संजय उवाच ।

८.३२.३

तत्स्थाने समवस्थाप्य प्रत्यमित्रं महाबलम् ।
अव्यूहतार्जुनो व्यूहं पुत्रस्य तव दुर्नये ॥

M N Dutt Sanjaya said Disregarding the huge hostile array arranged in that way Arjuna rayed his force in proper form on account of the evil policy of your son.

८.३२.४

तत्सादिनागकलिलं पदातिरथसंकुलम् ।
धृष्टद्युम्नमुखैर्व्यूढमशोभत महद्बलम् ॥

M N Dutt The huge army of the Pandavas, abounding in infantry, cavalry, elephants and cars and led by Dhristadyumna, looked magnificent.

८.३२.५

पारावतसवर्णाश्वश्चन्द्रादित्यसमद्युतिः ।
पार्षतः प्रबभौ धन्वी कालो विग्रहवानिव ॥

M N Dutt With his horses white as the pigeons and endued with the effulgence of the sun or the moon the son of Prishata, with bow in hand, shone like Death himself in body.

८.३२.६

पार्षतं त्वभि संतस्थुर्द्रौपदेया युयुत्सवः ।
सानुगा भीमवपुषश्चन्द्रं तारागणा इव ॥

M N Dutt The sons of Draupadi desirous of fighting stood by the side of the son of Prishata. They had celestial coats of mail and weapons and were powerful like tigers. They followed him like stars following the moon.

८.३२.७

अथ व्यूढेष्वनीकेषु प्रेक्ष्य संशप्तकान्रणे ।
क्रुद्धोऽर्जुनोऽभिदुद्राव व्याक्षिपन्गाण्डिवं धनुः ॥

M N Dutt Beholding he Samsaptakas in battle array, Arjuna, worked up with anger, rushed against them, drawing his Gandiva bow.

८.३२.८

अथ संशप्तकाः पार्थमभ्यधावन्वधैषिणः ।
विजये कृतसंकल्पा मृत्युं कृत्वा निवर्तनम् ॥

M N Dutt With a view to kill Arjuna the Samsaptakas bent upon acquiring victory, advanced against him, making death their end.

८.३२.९

तदश्वसंघबहुलं मत्तनागरथाकुलम् ।
पत्तिमच्छूरवीरौघैर्द्रुतमर्जुनमाद्रवत् ॥

M N Dutt Those brave warriors with men, horses, infuriate elephants and cars began quickly to assail Arjuna.

८.३२.१०

स संप्रहारस्तुमुलस्तेषामासीत्किरीटिना ।
तस्यैव नः श्रुतो यादृङ्निवातकवचैः सह ॥

M N Dutt Furious was their encounter with Kiritin. It resembled that between Arjuna and Nivata Kavachas, as we have heard.

८.३२.११

रथानश्वान्ध्वजान्नागान्पत्तीन्रथपतीनपि ।
इषून्धनूंषि खड्गांश्च चक्राणि च परश्वधान् ॥

८.३२.१२

सायुधानुद्यतान्बाहूनुद्यतान्यायुधानि च ।
चिच्छेद द्विषतां पार्थः शिरांसि च सहस्रशः ॥

M N Dutt Thousands and thousands of cars, horses, flags, elephants, foot-soldiers engaged in fighting, arrows, bows, swords, discus, battle axes, uplifted arms holding weapons and heads of enemies were cut by Partha.

८.३२.१३

तस्मिन्सैन्ये महावर्ते पातालावर्तसंनिभे ।
निमग्नं तं रथं मत्वा नेदुः संशप्तका मुदा ॥

M N Dutt Considering his car drowned into that whirlpool of warriors resembling the bed of the was nether region the Samsaptakas sent up loud war-cries.

८.३२.१४

स पुरस्तादरीन्हत्वा पश्चार्धेनोत्तरेण च ।
दक्षिणेन च बीभत्सुः क्रुद्धो रुद्रः पशूनिव ॥

M N Dutt Slaying all his enemies in front Partha killed those that stood at a distance, then those that were on his right and back like Rudra himself killing in anger the entire animate creation.

८.३२.१५

अथ पाञ्चालचेदीनां सृञ्जयानां च मारिष ।
त्वदीयैः सह संग्राम आसीत्परमदारुणः ॥

M N Dutt And exceedingly dreadful the encounter of your army with the Panchalas, Chedis and Srinjayas.

८.३२.१६

कृपश्च कृतवर्मा च शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ।
हृष्टसेनाः सुसंरब्धा रथानीकैः प्रहारिणः ॥

M N Dutt Kripa, Kritavarma, Shakuni, the son of Subala, with cheerful soldiers, all greatly worked up with anger and capable of striking the car-warriors fought with Kosalas, the Kachis, Matsyas, Karushas, Kekayas and Surasenas all of whom were highly terrible in battle.

८.३२.१७

कोसलैः काशिमत्स्यैश्च कारूषैः केकयैरपि ।
शूरसेनैः शूरवीरैर्युयुधुर्युद्धदुर्मदाः ॥

M N Dutt Kripa, Kritavarma, Shakuni, the son of Subala, with cheerful soldiers, all greatly worked up with anger and capable of striking the car-warriors fought with Kosalas, the Kachis, Matsyas, Karushas, Kekayas and Surasenas all of whom were highly terrible in battle.

८.३२.१८

तेषामन्तकरं युद्धं देहपाप्मप्रणाशनम् ।
शूद्रविट्क्षत्रवीराणां धर्म्यं स्वर्ग्यं यशस्करम् ॥

M N Dutt That great battle, destructive of life, body and sins, brought on fame, virtue and heaven for all the Kshatriya, Vaishyas and Sudra heroes that engaged in it.

८.३२.१९

दुर्योधनोऽपि सहितो भ्रातृभिर्भरतर्षभ ।
गुप्तः कुरुप्रवीरैश्च मद्राणां च महारथैः ॥

M N Dutt O best of Bharatas, meanwhile, the king Duryodhana, with all his brothers and Kuru heroes and many powerful Madraka carwarriors, protected Karna while he fought with the Pandavas, the Panchalas, the Chedis and Satyaki.

८.३२.२०

पाण्डवैः सहपाञ्चालैश्चेदिभिः सात्यकेन च ।
युध्यमानं रणे कर्णं कुरुवीरोऽभ्यपालयत् ॥

८.३२.२१

कर्णोऽपि निशितैर्बाणैर्विनिहत्य महाचमूम् ।
प्रमृद्य च रथश्रेष्ठान्युधिष्ठिरमपीडयत् ॥

M N Dutt Destroying that huge army with his sharpened arrows and assailing many leading car-warriors Karna afflicted Yudhishthira.

८.३२.२२

विपत्रायुधदेहासून्कृत्वा शत्रून्सहस्रशः ।
युक्त्वा स्वर्गयशोभ्यां च स्वेभ्यो मुदमुदावहत् ॥

M N Dutt Sundering the armour, weapons and bodies of thousands of his enemies, killing them by thousands and sending them to heaven to earn fame Karna gave great delight to his friends.

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।

८.३२.२३

यत्तत्प्रविश्य पार्थानां सेनां कुर्वञ्जनक्षयम् ।
कर्णो राजानमभ्यर्च्छत्तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥

M N Dutt Dhritarashtra said Tell me, O Sanjaya, how Karna, having caused a great carnage and entered into the midst of the Pandavas assailed the king Yudhishthira.

८.३२.२४

के च प्रवीराः पार्थानां युधि कर्णमवारयन् ।
कांश्च प्रमथ्याधिरथिर्युधिष्ठिरमपीडयत् ॥

M N Dutt What leading warriors amongst the Pandavas resisted Karna? Whom did Karna crush before he could assail Yudhishthira?

संजय उवाच ।

८.३२.२५

धृष्टद्युम्नमुखान्पार्थान्दृष्ट्वा कर्णो व्यवस्थितान् ।
समभ्यधावत्त्वरितः पाञ्चालाञ्शत्रुकर्शनः ॥

M N Dutt Sanjaya said Seeing the followers of the Pandavas led by Dhristadyumna stationed for battle, Karna, the subduer of foes, rushed furiously against the Panchalas.

८.३२.२६

तं तूर्णमभिधावन्तं पाञ्चाला जितकाशिनः ।
प्रत्युद्ययुर्महाराज हंसा इव महार्णवम् ॥

M N Dutt The Panchalas, desirous of victory, advanced against that high-souled one who came quickly as the swans go to the ocean.

८.३२.२७

ततः शङ्खसहस्राणां निस्वनो हृदयंगमः ।
प्रादुरासीदुभयतो भेरीशब्दश्च दारुणः ॥

M N Dutt Then there arose from both the armies the sound of a thousand conches capable striking terror into hearts as well as that of bugles.

८.३२.२८

नानावादित्रनादश्च द्विपाश्वरथनिस्वनः ।
सिंहनादश्च वीराणामभवद्दारुणस्तदा ॥

M N Dutt Then there arose the dreadful sound of warriors other musical instruments, the noise of the elephants, horses and cars and leonine shouts of the heroes.

८.३२.२९

साद्रिद्रुमार्णवा भूमिः सवाताम्बुदमम्बरम् ।
सार्केन्दुग्रहनक्षत्रा द्यौश्च व्यक्तं व्यघूर्णत ॥

M N Dutt The entire earth with her mountains, trees and oceans, the sky enshrouded with clouds driven by the wind and the whole firmament with the sun and the moon, scemed to tremble.

८.३२.३०

अति भूतानि तं शब्दं मेनिरेऽति च विव्यथुः ।
यानि चाप्लवसत्त्वानि प्रायस्तानि मृतानि च ॥

M N Dutt So dreadful appeared the noise to all creatures and they became all agitated. The weak amongst them fell dead.

८.३२.३१

अथ कर्णो भृशं क्रुद्धः शीघ्रमस्त्रमुदीरयन् ।
जघान पाण्डवीं सेनामासुरीं मघवानिव ॥

M N Dutt Then worked with great anger and invoking speedily his weapons Karna began to assail the Pandava host like Indra grinding the army of the demons.

८.३२.३२

स पाण्डवरथांस्तूर्णं प्रविश्य विसृजञ्शरान् ।
प्रभद्रकाणां प्रवरानहनत्सप्तसप्ततिम् ॥

M N Dutt Entering into the midst of the Pandava army and discharging his arrows furnished with beautiful wings of that best of car-warriors (Karna) killed seventy-seven five Prabhadrakas.

८.३२.३३

ततः सुपुङ्खैर्निशितै रथश्रेष्ठो रथेषुभिः ।
अवधीत्पञ्चविंशत्या पाञ्चालान्पञ्चविंशतिम् ॥

M N Dutt Karna, the best chariot warrior shot twenty five arrows having decent wings and beheaded twenty five Panchalas.

८.३२.३४

सुवर्णपुङ्खैर्नाराचैः परकायविदारणैः ।
चेदिकानवधीद्वीरः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥

M N Dutt With many gold feathered Narachas capable of piercing others bodies the hence killed hundred and thousands of the Chedis.

८.३२.३५

तं तथा समरे कर्म कुर्वाणमतिमानुषम् ।
परिवव्रुर्महाराज पाञ्चालानां रथव्रजाः ॥

M N Dutt While he was performing those superhuman feats in battle a large number of Panchala cars surrounded him quickly on all sides, O king.

८.३२.३६

ततः संधाय विशिखान्पञ्च भारत दुःसहान् ।
पाञ्चालानवधीत्पञ्च कर्णो वैकर्तनो वृषः ॥

M N Dutt O Bharata, then setting five dreadful arrows Karna, the son of Vikartana, killed five Panchalas.

८.३२.३७

भानुदेवं चित्रसेनं सेनाबिन्दुं च भारत ।
तपनं शूरसेनं च पाञ्चालानवधीद्रणे ॥

M N Dutt He killed in battle the Panchalas-Bhanudeva, Chitrasena, Senabindu, Tapana and Shurasena.

८.३२.३८

पाञ्चालेषु च शूरेषु वध्यमानेषु सायकैः ।
हाहाकारो महानासीत्पाञ्चालानां महाहवे ॥

M N Dutt The heroic Panchalas being thus killed with arrows there arose lamentations Alas! and Oh of the Panchalas in that great battle.

८.३२.३९

तेषां संकीर्यमाणानां हाहाकारकृता दिशः ।
पुनरेव च तान्कर्णो जघानाशु पतत्रिभिः ॥

M N Dutt Then ten car-warriors amongst Panchalas surrounded Karna whom all he quickly killed with arrows.

८.३२.४०

चक्ररक्षौ तु कर्णस्य पुत्रौ मारिष दुर्जयौ ।
सुषेणः सत्यसेनश्च त्यक्त्वा प्राणानयुध्यताम् ॥

M N Dutt Then the two protectors of Karna's carwheels, his two invincible sons, Sushena and Satyasena began to fight reckless of their lives.

८.३२.४१

पृष्ठगोपस्तु कर्णस्य ज्येष्ठः पुत्रो महारथः ।
वृषसेनः स्वयं कर्णं पृष्ठतः पर्यपालयत् ॥

M N Dutt The powerful car-warrior Vrishasena, the eldest son of Karna, himself protected his father's rear.

८.३२.४२

धृष्टद्युम्नः सात्यकिश्च द्रौपदेया वृकोदरः ।
जनमेजयः शिखण्डी च प्रवीराश्च प्रभद्रकाः ॥

M N Dutt Thereupon, Dhristadyumna, Satyaki, the five sons of Draupadi, Vrikodara, Janmejaya, Shikhandin and many leading warriors among Probhadrakas and many amongst the Chedis, the Kekayas and the Panchalas, the twins, the Matsyas, all clad in mail rushed upon Karna to kill him.

८.३२.४३

चेदिकेकयपाञ्चाला यमौ मत्स्याश्च दंशिताः ।
समभ्यधावन्राधेयं जिघांसन्तः प्रहारिणः ॥

M N Dutt Thereupon, Dhristadyumna, Satyaki, the five sons of Draupadi, Vrikodara, Janmejaya, Shikhandin and many leading warriors among Probhadrakas and many amongst the Chedis, the Kekayas and the Panchalas, the twins, the Matsyas, all clad in mail rushed upon Karna to kill him.

८.३२.४४

त एनं विविधैः शस्त्रैः शरधाराभिरेव च ।
अभ्यवर्षन्विमृद्नन्तः प्रावृषीवाम्बुदा गिरिम् ॥

M N Dutt Showering upon him various kinds of weapons and arrows they began to assail him like the clouds striking the mountain breast during the rainy season.

८.३२.४५

पितरं तु परीप्सन्तः कर्णपुत्राः प्रहारिणः ।
त्वदीयाश्चापरे राजन्वीरा वीरानवारयन् ॥

M N Dutt To rescue their father, the sons of Karna all of whom were sinless and many heroes of your army resisted them.

८.३२.४६

सुषेणो भीमसेनस्य छित्त्वा भल्लेन कार्मुकम् ।
नाराचैः सप्तभिर्विद्ध्वा हृदि भीमं ननाद ह ॥

M N Dutt Cutting off with a broad headed bow, that of Bhimasena, Sushena pierced him on the breast with seven Narachas and made a loud war-cry.
