महाभारतम् — ४.३२

वैशंपायन उवाच ।

तमसाभिप्लुते लोके रजसा चैव भारत ।
व्यतिष्ठन्वै मुहूर्तं तु व्यूढानीकाः प्रहारिणः ॥

M N Dutt Vaishampayana said O descendant of Bharata, the whole world being enshrouded in dust and natural darkness, the soldiers of both sides, without breaking the battle array, stopped for some time.

४.३२.२

ततोऽन्धकारं प्रणुदन्नुदतिष्ठत चन्द्रमाः ।
कुर्वाणो विमलां रात्रिं नन्दयन्क्षत्रियान्युधि ॥

M N Dutt Then dispelling the darkness the moon rose, making the night clear and gladdening the Kshatriyas in the battle field.

४.३२.३

ततः प्रकाशमासाद्य पुनर्युद्धमवर्तत ।
घोररूपं ततस्ते स्म नावेक्षन्त परस्परम् ॥

M N Dutt When every thing came in view, the battle began again; and it became so dreadful that they could not see each other.

४.३२.४

ततः सुशर्मा त्रैगर्तः सह भ्रात्रा यवीयसा ।
अभ्यद्रवन्मत्स्यराजं रथव्रातेन सर्वशः ॥

M N Dutt Then Susharma, the king of Trigartas, with his younger brother and surrounded by his cars, encountered the king of Matsya.

४.३२.५

ततो रथाभ्यां प्रस्कन्द्य भ्रातरौ क्षत्रियर्षभौ ।
गदापाणी सुसंरब्धौ समभ्यद्रवतां हयान् ॥

M N Dutt Then descending from their chariots, those two brothers, the foremost of Kshatriyas, worked up with anger, with mace in hands, rushed towards (the enemy's) cars.

४.३२.६

तथैव तेषां तु बलानि तानि
क्रुद्धान्यथान्योन्यमभिद्रवन्ति ।
गदासिखड्गैश्च परश्वधैश्च
प्रासैश्च तीक्ष्णाग्रसुपीतधारैः ॥

M N Dutt The hostile armies fiercely assailed each other with maces, swords, scimitars, axes, nooses, and with sharpened points.

४.३२.७

बलं तु मत्स्यस्य बलेन राजा
सर्वं त्रिगर्ताधिपतिः सुशर्मा ।
प्रमथ्य जित्वा च प्रसह्य मत्स्यं
विराटमोजस्विनमभ्यधावत् ॥

M N Dutt Having assailed and vanquished with energy the entire army of the king of Matsya's, Susharman, the king of Trigartas, rushed furiously at the highly energetic Virata.

४.३२.८

तौ निहत्य पृथग्धुर्यावुभौ च पार्ष्णिसारथी ।
विरथं मत्स्यराजानं जीवग्राहमगृह्णताम् ॥

M N Dutt Having slain severally his two horses, his charioteer as also the soldiers who protected him in the rear they took the king of Matsya captive, even alive, deprivation of his car.

४.३२.९

तमुन्मथ्य सुशर्मा तु रुदतीं वधुकामिव ।
स्यन्दनं स्वं समारोप्य प्रययौ शीघ्रवाहनः ॥

M N Dutt Then assailing him fiercely like a lustful person (oppressing) a female, they placed him on the car and speedily went out.

४.३२.१०

तस्मिन्गृहीते विरथे विराटे बलवत्तरे ।
प्राद्रवन्त भयान्मत्स्यास्त्रिगर्तैरर्दिता भृशम् ॥

M N Dutt After the powerful Virata, deprived of his car, had been taken captive, the Matsya's, greatly assailed by Trigartas, fled away to different directions in fear.

४.३२.११

तेषु संत्रास्यमानेषु कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
अभ्यभाषन्महाबाहुं भीमसेनमरिंदमम् ॥

M N Dutt Beholding them thus terrified Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, said to the mighty-armed Bhimasena, the slayer of enemies.

४.३२.१२

मत्स्यराजः परामृष्टस्त्रिगर्तेन सुशर्मणा ।
तं मोक्षय महाबाहो न गच्छेद्द्विषतां वशम् ॥

M N Dutt The king of Matsya has been captivated by Susharman, the king of Trigartas; O you of mighty arms, release him so that he may not be subject to the enemies.

४.३२.१३

उषिताः स्मः सुखं सर्वे सर्वकामैः सुपूजिताः ।
भीमसेन त्वया कार्या तस्य वासस्य निष्कृतिः ॥

M N Dutt We have lived happily in his house with our desire satisfied O Bhimasena, you should satisfy that debt.

भीमसेन उवाच ।

४.३२.१४

अहमेनं परित्रास्ये शासनात्तव पार्थिव ।
पश्य मे सुमहत्कर्म युध्यतः सह शत्रुभिः ॥

M N Dutt Bhimasena said By your command, O king, I shall set him free: behold my great feat of fighting with the enemies.

४.३२.१५

स्वबाहुबलमाश्रित्य तिष्ठ त्वं भ्रातृभिः सह ।
एकान्तमाश्रितो राजन्पश्य मेऽद्य पराक्रमम् ॥

M N Dutt Stay aside with brothers at a corner depending on the strength of your arms and behold my prowess today.

४.३२.१६

सुस्कन्धोऽयं महावृक्षो गदारूप इव स्थितः ।
एनमेव समारुज्य द्रावयिष्यामि शात्रवान् ॥

M N Dutt uprooting this huge tree with a trunk looking like a mace I shall assail the enemies.

वैशंपायन उवाच ।

४.३२.१७

तं मत्तमिव मातङ्गं वीक्षमाणं वनस्पतिम् ।
अब्रवीद्भ्रातरं वीरं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥

M N Dutt Vaishampayana said Seeing Bhima look at that tree like an infuriated elephant the heroic and pious king Yudhishthira said to his brother.

४.३२.१८

मा भीम साहसं कार्षीस्तिष्ठत्वेष वनस्पतिः ।
मा त्वा वृक्षेण कर्माणि कुर्वाणमतिमानुषम् ।
जनाः समवबुध्येरन्भीमोऽयमिति भारत ॥

M N Dutt "Do not commit such a rash act, О Bhima, let the tree stand there." You should not with a tree perform superhuman deeds.

४.३२.१९

अन्यदेवायुधं किंचित्प्रतिपद्यस्व मानुषम् ।
चापं वा यदि वा शक्तिं निस्त्रिंशं वा परश्वधम् ॥

४.३२.२०

यदेव मानुषं भीम भवेदन्यैरलक्षितम् ।
तदेवायुधमादाय मोक्षयाशु महीपतिम् ॥

M N Dutt A bow, or a dart, sword or battle-axe. Taking a weapon that is human, release the king, O Bhima, speedily, so that people may not recognize you. The highly powerful twins will be the protectors of your wheels. Being united together in battle, release the king of Matsya.

४.३२.२१

यमौ च चक्ररक्षौ ते भवितारौ महाबलौ ।
व्यूहतः समरे तात मत्स्यराजं परीप्सतः ॥

४.३२.२२

ततः समस्तास्ते सर्वे तुरगानभ्यचोदयन् ।
दिव्यमस्त्रं विकुर्वाणास्त्रिगर्तान्प्रत्यमर्षणाः ॥

M N Dutt Beholding the Pandavas return to their cars the entire huge army urged on their horses and began to assail the Trigartas with excellent weapons. Virata's son, greatly enraged, began to display highly wonderful feats in battle.

४.३२.२३

तान्निवृत्तरथान्दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवान्सा महाचमूः ।
वैराटी परमक्रुद्धा युयुधे परमाद्भुतम् ॥

M N Dutt Beholding the Pandavas return to their cars the entire huge army urged on their horses and began to assail the Trigartas with excellent weapons. Virata's son, greatly enraged, began to display highly wonderful feats in battle.

४.३२.२४

सहस्रं न्यवधीत्तत्र कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
भीमः सप्तशतान्योधान्परलोकमदर्शयत् ।
नकुलश्चापि सप्तैव शतानि प्राहिणोच्छरैः ॥

M N Dutt Kunti's son Yudhishthira killed one thousand and Bhima dispatched seven thousand.

४.३२.२५

शतानि त्रीणि शूराणां सहदेवः प्रतापवान् ।
युधिष्ठिरसमादिष्टो निजघ्ने पुरुषर्षभः ।
भित्त्वा तां महतीं सेनां त्रिगर्तानां नरर्षभ ॥

M N Dutt Nakula killed with arrows seven hundred and powerful Sahadeva the foremost of men, commanded by Yudhishthira, slew three hundreds of heroes. Slaying that huge army of Trigartas, the mighty car-warrior, Yudhishthira, with uplifted weapon, attacked him sorely with shafts.

४.३२.२६

ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा त्वरमाणो महारथः ।
अभिद्रुत्य सुशर्माणं शरैरभ्यतुदद्भृशम् ॥

४.३२.२७

सुशर्मापि सुसंक्रुद्धस्त्वरमाणो युधिष्ठिरम् ।
अविध्यन्नवभिर्बाणैश्चतुर्भिश्चतुरो हयान् ॥

४.३२.२८

ततो राजन्नाशुकारी कुन्तीपुत्रो वृकोदरः ।
समासाद्य सुशर्माणमश्वानस्य व्यपोथयत् ॥

४.३२.२९

पृष्ठगोपौ च तस्याथ हत्वा परमसायकैः ।
अथास्य सारथिं क्रुद्धो रथोपस्थादपाहरत् ॥

४.३२.३०

चक्ररक्षश्च शूरश्च शोणाश्वो नाम विश्रुतः ।
स भयाद्द्वैरथं दृष्ट्वा त्रैगर्तं प्राजहत्तदा ॥

४.३२.३१

ततो विराटः प्रस्कन्द्य रथादथ सुशर्मणः ।
गदामस्य परामृश्य तमेवाजघ्निवान्बली ।
स चचार गदापाणिर्वृद्धोऽपि तरुणो यथा ॥

M N Dutt Heroic (as he was) took up his Susharma's mace and rushed upon him, And he, with mace in hand moved about like a young man, although an old man.

४.३२.३२

भीमस्तु भीमसंकाशो रथात्प्रस्कन्द्य कुण्डली ।
त्रिगर्तराजमादत्त सिंहः क्षुद्रमृगं यथा ॥

M N Dutt With a view to get hold of the king of Trigarta approaching towards him the energetic Bhimasena rushed upon him like a lion upon a small deer.

४.३२.३३

तस्मिन्गृहीते विरथे त्रिगर्तानां महारथे ।
अभज्यत बलं सर्वं त्रैगर्तं तद्भयातुरम् ॥

४.३२.३४

निवर्त्य गास्ततः सर्वाः पाण्डुपुत्रा महाबलाः ।
अवजित्य सुशर्माणं धनं चादाय सर्वशः ॥

४.३२.३५

स्वबाहुबलसंपन्ना ह्रीनिषेधा यतव्रताः ।
संग्रामशिरसो मध्ये तां रात्रिं सुखिनोऽवसन् ॥

M N Dutt Having released Susharma, the Pandavas, then enemies slain, endowed with the strength of arms, observant of vows, and modest, passed that night happily in the midst of the battle-field. Then Virata honoured, with wealth and respect, those mighty car-warriors, the of Kunti, who were gifted with superhuman prowess.

४.३२.३६

ततो विराटः कौन्तेयानतिमानुषविक्रमान् ।
अर्चयामास वित्तेन मानेन च महारथान् ॥

M N Dutt Having released Susharma, the Pandavas, then enemies slain, endowed with the strength of arms, observant of vows, and modest, passed that night happily in the midst of the battle-field. Then Virata honoured, with wealth and respect, those mighty car-warriors, the of Kunti, who were gifted with superhuman prowess.

विराट उवाच ।

४.३२.३७

यथैव मम रत्नानि युष्माकं तानि वै तथा ।
कार्यं कुरुत तैः सर्वे यथाकामं यथासुखम् ॥

M N Dutt sons Virata said All these my jewels are as much mine as yours; do you all work as you like and as may conduce to your happiness.

४.३२.३८

ददान्यलंकृताः कन्या वसूनि विविधानि च ।
मनसश्चाप्यभिप्रेतं यद्वः शत्रुनिबर्हणाः ॥

M N Dutt O repressors of foes in battle, I shall center upon you women adorned with ornaments, plentiful riches and other things that you may like.

४.३२.३९

युष्माकं विक्रमादद्य मुक्तोऽहं स्वस्तिमानिह ।
तस्माद्भवन्तो मत्स्यानामीश्वराः सर्व एव हि ॥

M N Dutt By your prowess today I have been saved from peril. I am now crowned with victory. Do you all become the kings of Matsya's.

वैशंपायन उवाच ।

४.३२.४०

तथाभिवादिनं मत्स्यं कौरवेयाः पृथक्पृथक् ।
ऊचुः प्राञ्जलयः सर्वे युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमाः ॥

M N Dutt Vaishampayana said Those Kauravas, headed by Yudhishthira, with folded heads, said each severally to the king of the Matsya who had addressed them thus.

४.३२.४१

प्रतिनन्दाम ते वाक्यं सर्वं चैव विशां पते ।
एतेनैव प्रतीताः स्मो यत्त्वं मुक्तोऽद्य शत्रुभिः ॥

M N Dutt O king, we have been perfectly pleased with what you have said. It is a matter of gratification to us that you have been released from the enemies.

४.३२.४२

अथाब्रवीत्प्रीतमना मत्स्यराजो युधिष्ठिरम् ।
पुनरेव महाबाहुर्विराटो राजसत्तमः ।
एहि त्वामभिषेक्ष्यामि मत्स्यराजोऽस्तु नो भवान् ॥

M N Dutt Then the mighty armed, Virata, the king of Matsya's, the foremost of monarchs, again delightedly said to Yudhishthira.

४.३२.४३

मनसश्चाप्यभिप्रेतं यत्ते शत्रुनिबर्हण ।
तत्तेऽहं संप्रदास्यामि सर्वमर्हति नो भवान् ॥

४.३२.४४

रत्नानि गाः सुवर्णं च मणिमुक्तमथापि वा ।
वैयाघ्रपद्य विप्रेन्द्र सर्वथैव नमोऽस्तु ते ॥

४.३२.४५

त्वत्कृते ह्यद्य पश्यामि राज्यमात्मानमेव च ।
यतश्च जातः संरम्भः स च शत्रुर्वशं गतः ॥
