लोमश उवाच ।

इल्वलस्तान्विदित्वा तु महर्षिसहितान्नृपान् ।
उपस्थितान्सहामात्यो विषयान्तेऽभ्यपूजयत् ॥

Lomasha said: Having learnt that those kings with the great Rishi had arrived at the frontier of his kingdom. Ilvala with all his relatives went out and worshipped them duly.
३.९७.२
तेषां ततोऽसुरश्रेष्ठ आतिथ्यमकरोत्तदा ।
स संस्कृतेन कौरव्य भ्रात्रा वातापिना किल ॥

O descendant of Kuru, that foremost of Asuras received them with hospitality and entertained them with well cooked meat of his brother Vatapi (in the form of a goat).

वातापिं संस्कृतं दृष्ट्वा मेषभूतं महासुरम् ॥

Thereupon seeing Vatapi, the great Asura cooked, all the royal sages were filled with grief and became as senseless.
३.९७.४

विषादो वो न कर्तव्यो अहं भोक्ष्ये महासुरम् ॥
विषादो वो न कर्तव्यो अहं भोक्ष्ये महासुरम् ॥

Thereupon that foremost of Rishis Agastya said to those royal sages. “You ought not to grieve. I shall eat up the great Asura." When the great Rishi sat on an excellent seat in order to eat, the great Daitya Ilvala laughingly began to distribute the food.
३.९७.५
धुर्यासनमथासाद्य निषसाद महामुनिः ।
तं पर्यवेषद्दैत्येन्द्र इल्वलः प्रहसन्निव ॥

इल्वलश्च विषण्णोऽभूद्दृष्ट्वा जीर्णं महासुरम् ॥

"How can he come out? I have already digested that Asura." Seeing that great Asura digested, Ilvala became sad.
३.९७.८
प्राञ्जलिश्च सहामात्यैरिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।
किमर्थमुपयाताः स्थ ब्रूत किं करवाणि वः ॥
किमर्थमुपयाताः स्थ ब्रूत किं करवाणि वः ॥

Joining his hands along with his ministers, he thus spoke, “What for have you come here? And what can I do for you?”
३.९७.९
प्रत्युवाच ततोऽगस्त्यः प्रहसन्निल्वलं तदा ।
ईशं ह्यसुर विद्मस्त्वां वयं सर्वे धनेश्वरम् ॥
ईशं ह्यसुर विद्मस्त्वां वयं सर्वे धनेश्वरम् ॥

Thereupon Agastya smilingly thus replied, "O Asura, we know you to be possessed of great power and also enormous wealth.
३.९७.१०
इमे च नातिधनिनो धनार्थश्च महान्मम ।
यथाशक्त्यविहिंस्यान्यान्संविभागं प्रयच्छ नः ॥
यथाशक्त्यविहिंस्यान्यान्संविभागं प्रयच्छ नः ॥

These kings are not very wealthy, but my necessity of wealth is great. Give us what you can without injuring any other.
३.९७.११
ततोऽभिवाद्य तमृषिमिल्वलो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
दित्सितं यदि वेत्सि त्वं ततो दास्यामि ते वसु ॥
दित्सितं यदि वेत्सि त्वं ततो दास्यामि ते वसु ॥

Thereupon (having been thus addressed) Ilvala saluted the Rishi and thus spoke to him, "If you can say what it is that I mean to give, then I shall give you wealth.
अगस्त्य उवाच ।
३.९७.१२
गवां दश सहस्राणि राज्ञामेकैकशोऽसुर ।
तावदेव सुवर्णस्य दित्सितं ते महासुर ॥
तावदेव सुवर्णस्य दित्सितं ते महासुर ॥

Agastya said : O Asura, you have intended to give to each of these kings ten thousand kine and as many gold coins.
३.९७.१३
मह्यं ततो वै द्विगुणं रथश्चैव हिरण्मयः ।
मनोजवौ वाजिनौ च दित्सितं ते महासुर ।
जिज्ञास्यतां रथः सद्यो व्यक्तमेष हिरण्मयः ॥
मनोजवौ वाजिनौ च दित्सितं ते महासुर ।
जिज्ञास्यतां रथः सद्यो व्यक्तमेष हिरण्मयः ॥

O great Asura, to me you have intended to give twice as much and a golden chariot and a couple of horses with the speed of mind.

३.९७.१४
जिज्ञास्यमानः स रथः कौन्तेयासीद्धिरण्मयः ।
ततः प्रव्यथितो दैत्यो ददावभ्यधिकं वसु ॥
ततः प्रव्यथितो दैत्यो ददावभ्यधिकं वसु ॥

Lomasha said: O son of Kunti, he (Ilvala) made inquired and learnt that the car was really made of gold. The Daitya then with a sad heart gave away much wealth.
३.९७.१६
अगस्त्येनाभ्यनुज्ञाता जग्मू राजर्षयस्तदा ।
कृतवांश्च मुनिः सर्वं लोपामुद्राचिकीर्षितम् ॥
कृतवांश्च मुनिः सर्वं लोपामुद्राचिकीर्षितम् ॥

That car which are yoked the two horses, called Virava and Surava. O descendant of Bharata, these horses took those kings and Agastya and also all the wealth to the hermitage of Agastya within twinkling of an eye. Then obtaining Agastya's permission the royal sages went away to their respective cities. That Rishi (Agastya) did all that his wife Lopamudra had desired.
लोपामुद्रोवाच ।
३.९७.१७
कृतवानसि तत्सर्वं भगवन्मम काङ्क्षितम् ।
उत्पादय सकृन्मह्यमपत्यं वीर्यवत्तरम् ॥
उत्पादय सकृन्मह्यमपत्यं वीर्यवत्तरम् ॥

Lopamudra said : O exalted one, you have accomplished all my desires. (Now) beget on me a greatly powerful and virtuous son.
अगस्त्य उवाच ।
३.९७.१८
तुष्टोऽहमस्मि कल्याणि तव वृत्तेन शोभने ।
विचारणामपत्ये तु तव वक्ष्यामि तां शृणु ॥
विचारणामपत्ये तु तव वक्ष्यामि तां शृणु ॥

Agastya said : O blessed one, O beautiful lady, I am pleased with your conduct. Listen to me as regards the proposal I make in respect of your son.
३.९७.१९
सहस्रं तेऽस्तु पुत्राणां शतं वा दशसंमितम् ।
दश वा शततुल्याः स्युरेको वापि सहस्रवत् ॥
दश वा शततुल्याः स्युरेको वापि सहस्रवत् ॥

Do you desire to have one thousand sons or one hundred sons, each equal to one hundred or only one such who can conquer one thousand.
लोपामुद्रोवाच ।
३.९७.२०
सहस्रसंमितः पुत्र एको मेऽस्तु तपोधन ।
एको हि बहुभिः श्रेयान्विद्वान्साधुरसाधुभिः ॥
एको हि बहुभिः श्रेयान्विद्वान्साधुरसाधुभिः ॥

Lopamudra said : O great ascetic, let me have one son equal to one thousand. One learned and good son is preferable to many bad ones.

३.९७.२१
स तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय तया समभवन्मुनिः ।
समये समशीलिन्या श्रद्धावाञ्श्रद्दधानया ॥

Lomasha said: O King, saying “So be it”, that Rishi lived with reverence with his devoted wife of equal behaviour and then the Rishi) went away into the forest. After he had gone away to the forest, that conception grew on for seven years.

सप्तमेऽब्दे गते चापि प्राच्यवत्स महाकविः ।
ज्वलन्निव प्रभावेन दृढस्युर्नाम भारत ।
साङ्गोपनिषदान्वेदाञ्जपन्नेव महायशाः ॥
ज्वलन्निव प्रभावेन दृढस्युर्नाम भारत ।
साङ्गोपनिषदान्वेदाञ्जपन्नेव महायशाः ॥

O descendant of Bharata, when the seventh year passed, that highly learned man, called Dridasya came out of the womb blazing like fire.
३.९७.२४
तस्य पुत्रोऽभवदृषेः स तेजस्वी महानृषिः ।
स बाल एव तेजस्वी पितुस्तस्य निवेशने ।
इध्मानां भारमाजह्रे इध्मवाहस्ततोऽभवत् ॥
स बाल एव तेजस्वी पितुस्तस्य निवेशने ।
इध्मानां भारमाजह्रे इध्मवाहस्ततोऽभवत् ॥

Greatly powerful even in his childhood, he used to carry loads of sacrificial fuel to his father's house and hence he was called Idhmavaha.
