महाभारतम् — ३.२५६

वैशंपायन उवाच ।

जयद्रथस्तु संप्रेक्ष्य भ्रातरावुद्यतायुधौ ।
प्राद्रवत्तूर्णमव्यग्रो जीवितेप्सुः सुदुःखितः ॥

M N Dutt Vaishampayana said : Beholding the two brothers with upraised weapons, Jayadratha, desirous of living, stricken sorely with grief, ran away speedily and coolly.

३.२५६.२

तं भीमसेनो धावन्तमवतीर्य रथाद्बली ।
अभिद्रुत्य निजग्राह केशपक्षेऽत्यमर्षणः ॥

M N Dutt But getting down from his chariot the powerful Bhimasena pursued him speedily, who had thus taken to his heels and seized him by the hair of his head.

३.२५६.३

समुद्यम्य च तं रोषान्निष्पिपेष महीतले ।
गले गृहीत्वा राजानं ताडयामास चैव ह ॥

M N Dutt Holding him up Bhima again crushed him on earth; then taking the king by the head, he knocked him about.

३.२५६.४

पुनः संजीवमानस्य तस्योत्पतितुमिच्छतः ।
पदा मूर्ध्नि महाबाहुः प्राहरद्विलपिष्यतः ॥

M N Dutt When regaining his consciousness he expressed his desire of getting up the mightyarmcu herces kicked him on the head.

३.२५६.५

तस्य जानुं ददौ भीमो जघ्ने चैनमरत्निना ।
स मोहमगमद्राजा प्रहारवरपीडितः ॥

M N Dutt Bhima struck him on the breast with his knees and fists, and thus assailed the king soon lost his consciousness.

३.२५६.६

विरोषं भीमसेनं तु वारयामास फल्गुनः ।
दुःशलायाः कृते राजा यत्तदाहेति कौरव ॥

M N Dutt Falguna prevented the wrathful Bhimasena by reminding him of what the Kaurava king had said on behalf of Duhshala.

भीमसेन उवाच ।

३.२५६.७

नायं पापसमाचारो मत्तो जीवितुमर्हति ।
द्रौपद्यास्तदनर्हायाः परिक्लेष्टा नराधमः ॥

M N Dutt Bhima said: “This vilest and foolish man has done a great injury to Krishna who does not deserve it; so he does not deserve to live.

३.२५६.८

किं नु शक्यं मया कर्तुं यद्राजा सततं घृणी ।
त्वं च बालिशया बुद्ध्या सदैवास्मान्प्रबाधसे ॥

M N Dutt But what can I do? The king is always merciful and you too, out of childishness, are always preventing me.”

३.२५६.९

एवमुक्त्वा सटास्तस्य पञ्च चक्रे वृकोदरः ।
अर्धचन्द्रेण बाणेन किंचिदब्रुवतस्तदा ॥

M N Dutt Having said this Vrikodara, with his crescent-shaped arrow, shaved the hair of the king's head keeping five tufts at five places. But (Jayadratha) did not utter a word.

३.२५६.१०

विकल्पयित्वा राजानं ततः प्राह वृकोदरः ।
जीवितुं चेच्छसे मूढ हेतुं मे गदतः शृणु ॥

M N Dutt Thereupon Vrikodara said to the king, “O fool, if you wish to live, listen, I shall tell you the means.

३.२५६.११

दासोऽस्मीति त्वया वाच्यं संसत्सु च सभासु च ।
एवं ते जीवितं दद्यामेष युद्धजितो विधिः ॥

M N Dutt In public meetings and open courts you should always say that you are our slave; (if you can make this condition) I can give you your life. This is the custom of the victorious."

३.२५६.१२

एवमस्त्विति तं राजा कृच्छ्रप्राणो जयद्रथः ।
प्रोवाच पुरुषव्याघ्रं भीममाहवशोभिनम् ॥

M N Dutt Being thus treated the king Jayadratha said to that best of men, Bhima, who beautifies the battle-field "So be it."

३.२५६.१३

तत एनं विचेष्टन्तं बद्ध्वा पार्थो वृकोदरः ।
रथमारोपयामास विसंज्ञं पांसुगुण्ठितम् ॥

M N Dutt Thereupon taking him who was unconscious and besmeared with dust Partha and Vrikodara placed him on the chariot.

३.२५६.१४

ततस्तं रथमास्थाय भीमः पार्थानुगस्तदा ।
अभ्येत्याश्रममध्यस्थमभ्यगच्छद्युधिष्ठिरम् ॥

M N Dutt Thereupon placing him on the car, Bhima, followed by Partha, reached the hermitage and approached Yudhishthira who sat in the middle.

३.२५६.१५

दर्शयामास भीमस्तु तदवस्थं जयद्रथम् ।
तं राजा प्राहसद्दृष्ट्वा मुच्यतामिति चाब्रवीत् ॥

M N Dutt Bhima showed him Jayadratha who was in that plight. Seeing him, the king smilingly said "set him at liberty,"

३.२५६.१६

राजानं चाब्रवीद्भीमो द्रौपद्यै कथयेति वै ।
दासभावं गतो ह्येष पाण्डूनां पापचेतनः ॥

M N Dutt Bhima said to the king, “Tell Draupadi, that this vile man has become the slave of the Pandavas."

३.२५६.१७

तमुवाच ततो ज्येष्ठो भ्राता सप्रणयं वचः ।
मुञ्चैनमधमाचारं प्रमाणं यदि ते वयम् ॥

M N Dutt Thereupon his eldest brother said to him a affectionate terms. "If you have any regard for me let him be free."

३.२५६.१८

द्रौपदी चाब्रवीद्भीममभिप्रेक्ष्य युधिष्ठिरम् ।
दासोऽयं मुच्यतां राज्ञस्त्वया पञ्चसटः कृतः ॥

M N Dutt Beholding Yudhishthira Draupadi also said to Bhima, "Release him who is the slave of the king and whom you have disfigured by leaving five tufts on his head."

३.२५६.१९

स मुक्तोऽभ्येत्य राजानमभिवाद्य युधिष्ठिरम् ।
ववन्दे विह्वलो राजा तांश्च सर्वान्मुनींस्तदा ॥

M N Dutt Being released he approached and bowed to the king Yudhishthira; and seeing the ascetics there, he, beside himself, saluted them all.

३.२५६.२०

तमुवाच घृणी राजा धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
तथा जयद्रथं दृष्ट्वा गृहीतं सव्यसाचिना ॥

M N Dutt Beholding Jayadratha supported by Savyasachi, the kind king Yudhishthira, Dharma's son, said to him,

३.२५६.२१

अदासो गच्छ मुक्तोऽसि मैवं कार्षीः पुनः क्वचित् ।
स्त्रीकामुक धिगस्तु त्वां क्षुद्रः क्षुद्रसहायवान् ।
एवंविधं हि कः कुर्यात्त्वदन्यः पुरुषाधमः ॥

M N Dutt "You are a free man, go, I release you; but do not commit any such thing again. Fie on you! You wanted to take away a female by force, although you are so weak and powerless.

३.२५६.२२

गतसत्त्वमिव ज्ञात्वा कर्तारमशुभस्य तम् ।
संप्रेक्ष्य भरतश्रेष्ठः कृपां चक्रे नराधिपः ॥

M N Dutt What other vile man, except you, would think of doing this again?” Knowing that he had lost heart and looking at that perpetrator of evil deed, the foremost of Bharatas and king of men showed mercy (saying), "May your heart grow in virtue, never think of doing any such impious deed.

३.२५६.२३

धर्मे ते वर्धतां बुद्धिर्मा चाधर्मे मनः कृथाः ।
साश्वः सरथपादातः स्वस्ति गच्छ जयद्रथ ॥

३.२५६.२४

एवमुक्तस्तु सव्रीडं तूष्णीं किंचिदवाङ्मुखः ।
जगाम राजा दुःखार्तो गङ्गाद्वाराय भारत ॥

३.२५६.२५

स देवं शरणं गत्वा विरूपाक्षमुमापतिम् ।
तपश्चचार विपुलं तस्य प्रीतो वृषध्वजः ॥

३.२५६.२६

बलिं स्वयं प्रत्यगृह्णात्प्रीयमाणस्त्रिलोचनः ।
वरं चास्मै ददौ देवः स च जग्राह तच्छृणु ॥

३.२५६.२७

समस्तान्सरथान्पञ्च जयेयं युधि पाण्डवान् ।
इति राजाब्रवीद्देवं नेति देवस्तमब्रवीत् ॥

३.२५६.२८

अजय्यांश्चाप्यवध्यांश्च वारयिष्यसि तान्युधि ।
ऋतेऽर्जुनं महाबाहुं देवैरपि दुरासदम् ॥

M N Dutt This the king said to the god but he said "this cannot be." You shall once check them in battle who are unconquerable and are not capable of being slain, except the mightyarmed Arjuna who is the lord of the celestials incarnate named Nara. He carried on devout penances in Badari and is backed by Narayana.

३.२५६.२९

यमाहुरजितं देवं शङ्खचक्रगदाधरम् ।
प्रधानः सोऽस्त्रविदुषां तेन कृष्णेन रक्ष्यते ॥

M N Dutt The Deity has the mystic mark of Srivatsa, is clad in yellow silken raiment and is the best of those versed in the use of weapons. (Arjuna) is protected by such Krishna.

३.२५६.३०

एवमुक्तस्तु नृपतिः स्वमेव भवनं ययौ ।
पाण्डवाश्च वने तस्मिन्न्यवसन्काम्यके तदा ॥

M N Dutt The vicious-minded Jayadratha too repaired to his own house, the Pandavas too lived in the forest of Kamyaka.
