महाभारतम् — ३.१७२

वैशंपायन उवाच ।

तस्यां रजन्यां व्युष्टायां धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
उत्थायावश्यकार्याणि कृतवान्भ्रतृभिः सह ॥

M N Dutt Vaishampayana said : The night being spent, Yudhishthira, the foremost of the virtuous awoke and performed the necessary duties together with his brothers.

३.१७२.२

ततः संचोदयामास सोऽर्जुनं भ्रातृनन्दनम् ।
दर्शयास्त्राणि कौन्तेय यैर्जिता दानवास्त्वया ॥

M N Dutt Then he (Yudhishthira) said to Arjuna, the joy of his mother, “O son of Kunti, show me the weapons whereby you destroyed the Danavas."

३.१७२.३

ततो धनंजयो राजन्देवैर्दत्तानि पाण्डवः ।
अस्त्राणि तानि दिव्यानि दर्शयामास भारत ॥

M N Dutt Thereupon, O king, O Bharata, the Pandava, Arjuna showed those celestials weapons granted (to him) by the god,

३.१७२.४

यथान्यायं महातेजाः शौचं परममास्थितः ।
गिरिकूबरं पादपाङ्गं शुभवेणु त्रिवेणुकम् ।
पार्थिवं रथमास्थाय शोभमानो धनंजयः ॥

M N Dutt (And) duly observing the purificatory rites, the highly-energetic Dhananjaya, seated on the earth as (his) car, having the mountain for its pole, the base of the mountain for its axle and the cluster of beautiful bamboo trees for its socket pole and clad in that celestials mail of great splendour, looked (highly) beautiful.

३.१७२.५

ततः सुदंशितस्तेन कवचेन सुवर्चसा ।
धनुरादाय गाण्डीवं देवदत्तं च वारिजम् ॥

३.१७२.६

शोशुभ्यमानः कौन्तेय आनुपूर्व्यान्महाभुजः ।
अस्त्राणि तानि दिव्यानि दर्शनायोपचक्रमे ॥

M N Dutt (And)o son of Kunti, the handsome (Dhananjaya) of mighty arms, holding (in his hand) the bow Gandiva, together with the conch presented to him by the celestials, was about to exhibit in due order those celestials weapons. (But) As he commenced to display those heavenly weapons,

३.१७२.७

अथ प्रयोक्ष्यमाणेन दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि तेन वै ।
समाक्रान्ता मही पद्भ्यां समकम्पत सद्रुमा ॥

३.१७२.८

क्षुभिताः सरितश्चैव तथैव च महोदधिः ।
शैलाश्चापि व्यशीर्यन्त न ववौ च समीरणः ॥

३.१७२.९

न बभासे सहस्रांशुर्न जज्वाल च पावकः ।
न वेदाः प्रतिभान्ति स्म द्विजातीनां कथंचन ॥

३.१७२.१०

अन्तर्भूमिगता ये च प्राणिनो जनमेजय ।
पीड्यमानाः समुत्थाय पाण्डवं पर्यवारयन् ॥

३.१७२.११

वेपमानाः प्राञ्जलयस्ते सर्वे पिहिताननाः ।
दह्यमानास्तदास्त्रैस्तैर्याचन्ति स्म धनंजयम् ॥

३.१७२.१२

ततो ब्रह्मर्षयश्चैव सिद्धाश्चैव सुरर्षयः ।
जङ्गमानि च भूतानि सर्वाण्येवावतस्थिरे ॥

३.१७२.१३

राजर्षयश्च प्रवरास्तथैव च दिवौकसः ।
यक्षराक्षसगन्धर्वास्तथैव च पतत्रिणः ॥

३.१७२.१४

ततः पितामहश्चैव लोकपालाश्च सर्वशः ।
भगवांश्च महादेवः सगणोऽभ्याययौ तदा ॥

M N Dutt Then Pitamaha (Brahma), all the Lokapalas (the guardians of the ten cardinal points), the divine Mahadeva, together with all their followers, made their appearance (at that spot).

३.१७२.१५

ततो वायुर्महाराज दिव्यैर्माल्यैः सुगन्धिभिः ।
अभितः पाण्डवांश्चित्रैरवचक्रे समन्ततः ॥

M N Dutt (And) then, O mighty monarch, Vayu (the wind-god) bearing bearing variegated celestials flowers, began to strew them all around the Pandava (Arjuna).

३.१७२.१६

जगुश्च गाथा विविधा गन्धर्वाः सुरचोदिताः ।
ननृतुः संघशश्चैव राजन्नप्सरसां गणाः ॥

M N Dutt O king, commissioned by the gods, the Gandharvas sang various melodies and multitudes of Apsaras danced there.

३.१७२.१७

तस्मिंस्तु तुमुले काले नारदः सुरचोदितः ।
आगम्याह वचः पार्थं श्रवणीयमिदं नृप ॥

M N Dutt (And)O king, at that very time, Narada, sent by the celestials, arrived (there) and spoke to Partha these words grateful to the ear:

३.१७२.१८

अर्जुनार्जुन मा युङ्क्ष्व दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि भारत ।
नैतानि निरधिष्ठाने प्रयुज्यन्ते कदाचन ॥

M N Dutt "O Arjuna, O Bharata, forebear discharging these celestials weapons. These (weapons) ought, by no means, to be hurled where there is no object to hit at.

३.१७२.१९

अधिष्ठाने न वानार्तः प्रयुञ्जीत कदाचन ।
प्रयोगे सुमहान्दोषो ह्यस्त्राणां कुरुनन्दन ॥

M N Dutt And unless sore afflicted, one should not discharge these even if there is an object (present). O descendant of the Kurus, it will result in a terrible disaster, if these weapons are (causclessly) discharged.

३.१७२.२०

एतानि रक्ष्यमाणानि धनंजय यथागमम् ।
बलवन्ति सुखार्हाणि भविष्यन्ति न संशयः ॥

M N Dutt O Dhananjaya, if these powerful weapons are duly kept, they will no doubt, lead to your happiness.

३.१७२.२१

अरक्ष्यमाणान्येतानि त्रैलोक्यस्यापि पाण्डव ।
भवन्ति स्म विनाशाय मैवं भूयः कृथाः क्वचित् ॥

M N Dutt (But), O Pandava, if they are not (carefully) preserved, they will lead to the destruction of the three worlds. Therefore, do not attempt such a (rash) act again.

३.१७२.२२

अजातशत्रो त्वं चैव द्रक्ष्यसे तानि संयुगे ।
योज्यमानानि पार्थेन द्विषतामवमर्दने ॥

M N Dutt O Ajatashatru (Yudhishthira), you will behold them when Partha will make use of them for the destruction of your enemies in battle."

३.१७२.२३

निवार्याथ ततः पार्थं सर्वे देवा यथागतम् ।
जग्मुरन्ये च ये तत्र समाजग्मुर्नरर्षभ ॥

M N Dutt O the most exalted of mortals, having prevented Arjuna (from hurling these weapons), all the celestials and all other beings who had come there went to their respective abodes.

३.१७२.२४

तेषु सर्वेषु कौरव्य प्रतियातेषु पाण्डवाः ।
तस्मिन्नेव वने हृष्टास्त ऊषुः सह कृष्णया ॥

M N Dutt O descendant of the Kurus, when all those had taken their departure, the Pandavas, together with Krishna, began to dwell cheerfully in that forest.
