महाभारतम् — १५.४४

जनमेजय उवाच ।

दृष्ट्वा पुत्रांस्तथा पौत्रान्सानुबन्धाञ्जनाधिपः ।
धृतराष्ट्रः किमकरोद्राजा चैव युधिष्ठिरः ॥

M N Dutt Having seen his sons and grandsons with all their friends and followers, what, indeed, did that king, viz., Dhritarashtra, and king Yudhishthira also, do?

वैशंपायन उवाच ।

१५.४४.२

तद्दृष्ट्वा महदाश्चर्यं पुत्राणां दर्शनं पुनः ।
वीतशोकः स राजर्षिः पुनराश्रममागमत् ॥

M N Dutt Vaishampayana said Seeing that highly wonderful spectacle, : viz., the re-appearance of his children, the royal sage, Dhritarashtra renounced his grief and returned to his hermitage.

१५.४४.३

इतरस्तु जनः सर्वस्ते चैव परमर्षयः ।
प्रतिजग्मुर्यथाकामं धृतराष्ट्राभ्यनुज्ञया ॥

M N Dutt The common people and all the great Rishis, sent away by Dhritarashtra, came back to the places they respectively wished.

१५.४४.४

पाण्डवास्तु महात्मानो लघुभूयिष्ठसैनिकाः ।
अनुजग्मुर्महात्मानं सदारं तं महीपतिम् ॥

M N Dutt The great Pandavas accompanied by their wives, and with a small retinue, went to the hermitage of the great monarch.

१५.४४.५

तमाश्रमगतं धीमान्ब्रह्मर्षिर्लोकपूजितः ।
मुनिः सत्यवतीपुत्रो धृतराष्ट्रमभाषत ॥

१५.४४.६

धृतराष्ट्र महाबाहो शृणु कौरवनन्दन ।
श्रुतं ते ज्ञानवृद्धानामृषीणां पुण्यकर्मणाम् ॥

१५.४४.७

ऋद्धाभिजनवृद्धानां वेदवेदाङ्गवेदिनाम् ।
धर्मज्ञानां पुराणानां वदतां विविधाः कथाः ॥

१५.४४.८

मा स्म शोके मनः कार्षीर्दिष्टे न व्यथते बुधः ।
श्रुतं देवरहस्यं ते नारदाद्देवदर्शनात् ॥

M N Dutt Do not set your mind again on sorrow. He who is wise is never moved at ill luck. You have also heard the mysteries of the deities from Narada of celestial form.

१५.४४.९

गतास्ते क्षत्रधर्मेण शस्त्रपूतां गतिं शुभाम् ।
यथा दृष्टास्त्वया पुत्रा यथाकामविहारिणः ॥

M N Dutt Your children have all attained, through performance of Kshatriya practices, to that auspicious end which is sanctified by weapons. You have seen how they moved about at will in great happiness.

१५.४४.१०

युधिष्ठिरस्त्वयं धीमान्भवन्तमनुरुध्यते ।
सहितो भ्रातृभिः सर्वैः सदारः ससुहृज्जनः ॥

M N Dutt This Yudhishthira of great intelligence is awaiting your permission with all his brothers and wives and kinsmen.

१५.४४.११

विसर्जयैनं यात्वेष स्वराज्यमनुशासताम् ।
मासः समधिको ह्येषामतीतो वसतां वने ॥

M N Dutt Do you send him away. Let him return to his kingdom and rule it! They have passed more then a month in thus living in the forest.

१५.४४.१२

एतद्धि नित्यं यत्नेन पदं रक्ष्यं परंतप ।
बहुप्रत्यर्थिकं ह्येतद्राज्यं नाम नराधिप ॥

M N Dutt The station of sovereignty should always be well-guarded, o king! O you of Kuru's race, kingdom has many enemies.'

१५.४४.१३

इत्युक्तः कौरवो राजा व्यासेनामितबुद्धिना ।
युधिष्ठिरमथाहूय वाग्मी वचनमब्रवीत् ॥

१५.४४.१४

अजातशत्रो भद्रं ते शृणु मे भ्रातृभिः सह ।
त्वत्प्रसादान्महीपाल शोको नास्मान्प्रबाधते ॥

M N Dutt Thus addressed by Vyasa of incomparable energy, the Kuru king, well versed in words summoned Yudhishthira and said to him, 'O you having no enemies, blessing on you! Do you listen to me, with all your brothers! Through your grace, O king, grief no longer stands in my way.

१५.४४.१५

रमे चाहं त्वया पुत्र पुरेव गजसाह्वये ।
नाथेनानुगतो विद्वन्प्रियेषु परिवर्तिना ॥

M N Dutt I am living as happily, O son, with you here as if I were in the city of Hastinapur. With you as my protector, O learned one, I am enjoying all agreeable objects.

१५.४४.१६

प्राप्तं पुत्रफलं त्वत्तः प्रीतिर्मे विपुला त्वयि ।
न मे मन्युर्महाबाहो गम्यतां पुत्र मा चिरम् ॥

M N Dutt I have obtained from you all those services which a son renders to his sire. I am highly pleased with you. I have not the least dissatisfaction with you. O mighty-armed one. Go now, O son, without waiting here any longer.

१५.४४.१७

भवन्तं चेह संप्रेक्ष्य तपो मे परिहीयते ।
तपोयुक्तं शरीरं च त्वां दृष्ट्वा धारितं पुनः ॥

M N Dutt Meeting with you, my penances are being slackened. This my body, gifted with penances. I have been able to sustain only on account of my meeting with you.

१५.४४.१८

मातरौ ते तथैवेमे शीर्णपर्णकृताशने ।
मम तुल्यव्रते पुत्र नचिरं वर्तयिष्यतः ॥

M N Dutt These two mothers of yours, living now upon fallen leaves of trees, and observing vows similar to mine, will not live long.

१५.४४.१९

दुर्योधनप्रभृतयो दृष्टा लोकान्तरं गताः ।
व्यासस्य तपसो वीर्याद्भवतश्च समागमात् ॥

M N Dutt We have seen Duryodhana and others who have become dwellers of the other world, through the power of Vyasa's penances and through the merit of this my meeting with you.

१५.४४.२०

प्रयोजनं चिरं वृत्तं जीवितस्य च मेऽनघ ।
उग्रं तपः समास्थास्ये त्वमनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥

M N Dutt O sinless one, I have gained the object of my life. I now wish to practice the austerest of penances. You should grant me permission.

१५.४४.२१

त्वय्यद्य पिण्डः कीर्तिश्च कुलं चेदं प्रतिष्ठितम् ।
श्वो वाद्य वा महाबाहो गम्यतां पुत्र मा चिरम् ॥

M N Dutt The obsequial cake, the fame and achievements, and the family of our ancestors, now depend upon you entirely. O mightyarmed one, do you then go either to-morrow or this very day. Do not tarry. O son.

१५.४४.२२

राजनीतिः सुबहुशः श्रुता ते भरतर्षभ ।
संदेष्टव्यं न पश्यामि कृतमेतावता विभो ॥

M N Dutt O chief of Bharata's race, you have repeatedly heard what the duties are of kings. I do not see what more I can say to you. I have no longer any necessity with you, O you of great power.

१५.४४.२३

इत्युक्तवचनं तात नृपो राजानमब्रवीत् ।
न मामर्हसि धर्मज्ञ परित्यक्तुमनागसम् ॥

M N Dutt Vaishampayana continued : King Yudhishthira replied to the (old) king who said so, saying, 'O you who know every rules of virtue, you should not cast me off in this way. I am guilty of not fault.

१५.४४.२४

कामं गच्छन्तु मे सर्वे भ्रातरोऽनुचरास्तथा ।
भवन्तमहमन्विष्ये मातरौ च यतव्रते ॥

M N Dutt Let all my brothers and followers go as they like. With steadfast vows I shall wait upon you and upon these two mothers of mine.'

१५.४४.२५

तमुवाचाथ गान्धारी मैवं पुत्र शृणुष्व मे ।
त्वय्यधीनं कुरुकुलं पिण्डश्च श्वशुरस्य मे ॥

M N Dutt Gandhari then said to him. 'O son, let it not be so. Listen, the family of Kuru is now dependent on you. The obsequial cake also of my father-in-law depends on you Depart then, O son.

१५.४४.२६

गम्यतां पुत्र पर्याप्तमेतावत्पूजिता वयम् ।
राजा यदाह तत्कार्यं त्वया पुत्र पितुर्वचः ॥

M N Dutt We have been sufficiently honoured and served by you. You should do what the king says. Indeed, O son, you should obey the command of your sire.

१५.४४.२७

इत्युक्तः स तु गान्धार्या कुन्तीमिदमुवाच ह ।
स्नेहबाष्पाकुले नेत्रे प्रमृज्य रुदतीं वचः ॥

M N Dutt Vaishampayana continued : Thus addressed by Gandhari, king Yudhishthira, rubbing his eyes which were bathed in tears of affection, said these words bewailingly.

१५.४४.२८

विसर्जयति मां राजा गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ।
भवत्यां बद्धचित्तस्तु कथं यास्यामि दुःखितः ॥

M N Dutt The king is renouncing me, a also the illustrious Gandhari. My heart, however, is bound to you. How shall I, stricken as I am with sorrow, leave you.

१५.४४.२९

न चोत्सहे तपोविघ्नं कर्तुं ते धर्मचारिणि ।
तपसो हि परं नास्ति तपसा विन्दते महत् ॥

M N Dutt I do not, however, at the same time, venture to obstruct your penances, O rights our lady! There is nothing higher than penances. It is by penances that one act quires the Supreme.

१५.४४.३०

ममापि न तथा राज्ञि राज्ये बुद्धिर्यथा पुरा ।
तपस्येवानुरक्तं मे मनः सर्वात्मना तथा ॥

M N Dutt O queen, my heart not longer as of old towards kingdom. My mind is wholly set upon penances now.

१५.४४.३१

शून्येयं च मही सर्वा न मे प्रीतिकरी शुभे ।
बान्धवा नः परिक्षीणा बलं नो न यथा पुरा ॥

M N Dutt The entire Earth is empty now. O auspicious lady, she does not please me any longer! Our kinsmen have been reduced in number. Our strength is no longer what it was before.

१५.४४.३२

पाञ्चालाः सुभृशं क्षीणाः कन्यामात्रावशेषिताः ।
न तेषां कुलकर्तारं कंचित्पश्याम्यहं शुभे ॥

M N Dutt The Panchalas have been wholly rooted out. Only nominally they exist. O auspicious lady, I do not see any one who may assist at their reestablishment and growth.

१५.४४.३३

सर्वे हि भस्मसान्नीता द्रोणेनैकेन संयुगे ।
अवशेषास्तु निहता द्रोणपुत्रेण वै निशि ॥

M N Dutt All of them have been reduced to ashes by Drona on the field of battle. The remnant were killed by Drona's son at night.

१५.४४.३४

चेदयश्चैव मत्स्याश्च दृष्टपूर्वास्तथैव नः ।
केवलं वृष्णिचक्रं तु वासुदेवपरिग्रहात् ।
यं दृष्ट्वा स्थातुमिच्छामि धर्मार्थं नान्यहेतुकम् ॥

M N Dutt The Chedis and the Matsyas, who were our friends, no longer exist. Only the tribes of the Vrishnis are all that remain, Vasudeva having kept them up.

१५.४४.३५

शिवेन पश्य नः सर्वान्दुर्लभं दर्शनं तव ।
भविष्यत्यम्ब राजा हि तीव्रमारप्स्यते तपः ॥

१५.४४.३६

एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाबाहुः सहदेवो युधां पतिः ।
युधिष्ठिरमुवाचेदं बाष्पव्याकुललोचनः ॥

M N Dutt The king will commence to practice the most austere and unbearable of penances!' Hearing these words, that king of battle, the mighty-armed Shadeva with eyes bathed in tears, addressed Yudhishthira, saying, 'O chief of Bharata race, I dare not leave my mother.

१५.४४.३७

नोत्सहेऽहं परित्यक्तुं मातरं पार्थिवर्षभ ।
प्रतियातु भवान्क्षिप्रं तपस्तप्स्याम्यहं वने ॥

१५.४४.३८

इहैव शोषयिष्यामि तपसाहं कलेवरम् ।
पादशुश्रूषणे युक्तो राज्ञो मात्रोस्तथानयोः ॥

१५.४४.३९

तमुवाच ततः कुन्ती परिष्वज्य महाभुजम् ।
गम्यतां पुत्र मैवं त्वं वोचः कुरु वचो मम ॥

१५.४४.४०

आगमा वः शिवाः सन्तु स्वस्था भवत पुत्रकाः ।
उपरोधो भवेदेवमस्माकं तपसः कृते ॥

१५.४४.४१

त्वत्स्नेहपाशबद्धा च हीयेयं तपसः परात् ।
तस्मात्पुत्रक गच्छ त्वं शिष्टमल्पं हि नः प्रभो ॥

१५.४४.४२

एवं संस्तम्भितं वाक्यैः कुन्त्या बहुविधैर्मनः ।
सहदेवस्य राजेन्द्र राज्ञश्चैव विशेषतः ॥

१५.४४.४३

ते मात्रा समनुज्ञाता राज्ञा च कुरुपुंगवाः ।
अभिवाद्य कुरुश्रेष्ठमामन्त्रयितुमारभन् ॥

१५.४४.४४

राजन्प्रतिगमिष्यामः शिवेन प्रतिनन्दिताः ।
अनुज्ञातास्त्वया राजन्गमिष्यामो विकल्मषाः ॥

M N Dutt Yudhishthira said Delighted by auspicious blessings, we shall return to the capital. Indeed, O king having received your permission, we shall leave this hermitage freed from every sin.

१५.४४.४५

एवमुक्तः स राजर्षिर्धर्मराज्ञा महात्मना ।
अनुजज्ञे जयाशीर्भिरभिनन्द्य युधिष्ठिरम् ॥

M N Dutt Thus addressed by the great king Yudhishthira the just, that royal sage, viz., Dhritarashtra, blessed Yudhishthira and gave him permission.

१५.४४.४६

भीमं च बलिनां श्रेष्ठं सान्त्वयामास पार्थिवः ।
स चास्य सम्यङ्मेधावी प्रत्यपद्यत वीर्यवान् ॥

M N Dutt The king comforted Bhima, that foremost of all persons gifted with great strength. Gifted with great energy and great intelligence, Bhima showed his sub-missiveness to the king.

१५.४४.४७

अर्जुनं च समाश्लिष्य यमौ च पुरुषर्षभौ ।
अनुजज्ञे स कौरव्यः परिष्वज्याभिनन्द्य च ॥

M N Dutt Embracing Arjuna and clasping those foremost of men, viz., the twins also, and blessing them repeatedly, the Kuru king gave them permission to go.

१५.४४.४८

गान्धार्या चाभ्यनुज्ञाताः कृतपादाभिवन्दनाः ।
जनन्या समुपाघ्राताः परिष्वक्ताश्च ते नृपम् ।
चक्रुः प्रदक्षिणं सर्वे वत्सा इव निवारणे ॥

M N Dutt They adored the feet of Gandhari and received her blessings also. Their mother Kunti then smelt their heads, and dismissed them. They then went round the king like calves, when prevented from sucking, their dams, Indeed, they repeatedly walked round him, loO king steadfastly at him.
