भट्टिकाव्यम् (रावणवधः) — विंशः सर्गः | bhaṭṭikāvyam (rāvaṇavadhaḥ)

समुपेत्य ततः सीतामुक्तवान्पवनाऽऽत्मजः ।
दिष्ट्या वर्धस्व वैदेहि हतस्त्रैलोक्यकण्टकः ॥

Karandikar Then having approached Sita, Maruti said, "Oh Videha Princess, may you prosper by good fortune. The thorn of the three worlds (Ravana) is slain.

२०.२

अनुजानीहि हन्यन्तां मयैताः क्षुद्रमानसाः ।
रक्षिकास्तव राक्षस्यो गृहाणैतासु मत्सरम् ॥

Karandikar "Permit me ; let these meanminded demonessess, your guards, be killed by me ; entertain anger towards these.

२०.३

तृण्हानि दुराऽऽचारघोर-रूपाऽऽशय-क्रियाः । हिंस्रा भवतु ते बुद्धिरेतास्कुरु निष्ठुरम् ॥

Karandikar I would kill (these guards) whose behaviour is evil and whose forms, intentions and actions are dreadful ; let your intention be harmful to these ; act mercilessly.

२०.४

पश्चिमं करवामैतत्प्रियं देवि वयं तव ।
ततः प्रोक्तवती सीता वानरं करुणाऽऽशया ॥

Karandikar "Let us do this final (deed) pleasurable to you." Then Sita, whose heart was compassionate, spoke to the monkey thus:

२०.५

उपशाम्यतु ते बुद्धिः पिण्डनिर्वेशकारिषु ।
लघुसत्वेषु दोषोऽयं यत्कृतोनिहतोऽसकौ ॥

Karandikar May your mind calm down towards these insignificant creatures who make (their) living on morsels. The wretch by whom this crime was committed is slain.

२०.६

न हि प्रेष्यवधं घोरं करवान्यस्तु ते मतिः ।
एधि कार्यकरस्त्वं मे गत्वा प्रवद राघवम् ॥

Karandikar May the intention I shall indulge in the cruel massacre of servants, be not yours. Be inclined to do my work. Having departed, you speak to Rama :

२०.७

"दिदृक्षुर्मैथिली राम ! पश्यतु त्वाऽविलम्बितम्" ।
तथेति स प्रतिज्ञाय गत्वा राघवमुक्तवान् ॥

Karandikar Rama, let the Mithila Princess, desirous of seeing you, see you without delay' .' After promising, ''As you say, and having gone, he said to Rama :

२०.८

उत्सुकाऽऽनीयतां देवी काकुत्स्थकुलनन्दन ।
क्ष्मां लिखित्वा विनिश्वस्य स्वराऽऽलोक्य विभीषणम् ॥

Karandikar Oh delighter of the Kakutstha family, let the pining queen be brought (here).” Having scratched the ground, sighed and looked up into the sky, to Vibhisana.

२०.९

उक्तवान्राघवः-"सीतामानयाऽलंकृतामिति ।
" ।
गत्वा प्रणम्य तेनोक्ता मैथिली मधुरं वचः ॥

Karandikar -Rama said, "Fetch Sita, (properly) decorated. " After having gone (to the place where Sita was), Sita was add ressed by him (these) sweet words:

२०.१०

जहीहि शोकां वैदेहि प्रीतये धेहि मानसम् ।
रावणे जहिहि द्वेषां जहाहि प्रमदावनम् ॥

Karandikar "Give up grief, Oh Videha Princess, set your mind on delight; dismiss hatred towards Ravana ; leave the ladies ' grove;

२०.११

स्नाह्यनुलिम्प धूपाय निवस्स्वाऽऽविध्य च स्रजम् ।
रत्नान्याऽऽमुञ्च संदीप्ते हविर्जुहुधि पावके ॥

Karandikar 'Bathe, anoint,fumigate with incense, dress up in (rich) clothes, wear a garland, put on jewellery and offer an oblation in enkindled fire.

२०.१२

अद्धि त्वं पञ्चगव्यं च छिन्धि संरोधजं तमः ।
आरोह शिबिकां हैमीं द्विषां जहि मनोरथान् ॥

Karandikar 'Consume the pentamix-cow-product (panica-gavya) and dispel the gloom arising from imprisonment, Mount a golden palanquin, thwart the desires of the enemies.

२०.१३

तृणेढु त्वद्वियोगोत्थां राजन्यानां पतिः शुचम् ।
भवतादधियुक्ता त्वमत ऊर्ध्वं स्ववेश्मनि ॥

Karandikar May the Lord of the Ksatriyas and the grief arising from your separation. May you henceforward be in your own house, united (with Rama).

२०.१४

दीक्षस्व सह रामेण त्वरितं तुरगाऽध्वरे ।
दृश्यस्व पत्या प्रीतेन प्रीत्या प्रेक्षस्व राघवम् ॥

Karandikar May you soon be consecrated with Rama in a horse sacrifice; may you be looked at by your delighted husband; ( yourself) pleased, behold Rama.

२०.१५

अयं नियोगः पत्युस्ते कार्या नाऽत्र विचारणा ।
भूषयाऽङ्गं प्रमाणं चेद्रामं गन्तुं यतस्व च ॥

Karandikar This is the command of your husband; no investi gation need be done herein. If authentic (these words) be to you , adorn (your) body and exert to go to Rama.

२०.१६

मुदा संयुहि काकुत्स्थं स्वयं चाऽऽप्नूहि सम्पदम् ।
उपेह्यूर्ध्वं मुहूर्तात्त्वं देवि राघवसन्निधिम् ॥

Karandikar 'Unite Rama with joy, and yourself too acquire ecstacy. Oh Queen, you reach the vicinity of Rama within a thrita.

२०.१७

ऊर्ध्वं मुहूर्तादह्नोऽङ्ग स्वामिनी स्म भव क्षितेः ।
राजपत्नीनियोगस्थमनुशाधि पुरीजनम् ॥

Karandikar After a muhra of the day, Oh queen, be the mistress of the earth. Ordain the people of the city who abide by the orders of the King's wife.

२०.१८

उत्तिष्ठस्व मते पत्युर्यतस्वाऽलङ्कृतौ तथा ।
प्रतिष्ठस्व च तं द्रष्टुं द्रष्टव्यं त्वं मही-पतिम् ।
" ॥

Karandikar “Stand up by the intention of (your) husband; so also exert for personal decoration and you proceed to see that King who deserves to be seen.'"

२०.१९

अनुष्ठाय यथाऽऽदिष्टं नियोगं जनकाऽऽत्मजा ।
ममारूढवती यानं पट्टांऽशुकवृताऽऽनना ॥

Karandikar Having carried out the order as instructed, Janaka's daughter, who had covered her face with a silken garment, mounted the vehicle.

२०.२०

लज्जाऽनता विसंयोगदुःखस्मरणविह्वला ।
साऽस्रा गत्वाऽन्तिकं पत्युर्दीना रुदितवत्यसौ ॥

Karandikar Bent down in shyness, pained by the recollection of the grief of separation, full of tears, that poor (pitiable) one wept after reaching the vicinity of her husband.

२०.२१

प्राप्तचारित्र्यसन्देहस्ततस्तामुक्तवान्नृपः ।
इच्छामेनाऽऽददे सीते त्वामहं गम्यतामतः ॥

Karandikar Then the King, who had attained (felt) a suspicion regarding her behaviour, spoke to her : 'This is my desire; I should not accept you ; go away from here,

२०.२२

रावणाऽङ्कपरिश्लिष्टा त्वं हृल्लेखकरी मम ।
मतिं बधान सुग्रीवे राक्षसेन्द्रं गृहाण वा ॥

Karandikar Molested on Ravana's lap, you who have left scars on my heart, fix your mind on Sugriva or take to the lord of the demons.

२०.२३

अशान भरताद्भोगान्लक्ष्मणं प्रवृणीष्व वा ।
कामाद्वा याहि मुच्यन्तामाशा रामनिबन्धनाः ॥

Karandikar Enjoy pleasures from Bharata or choose Laksmana, or go away at your will; let the hopes fixed on Rama be given up.

२०.२४

क्व च ख्यातो रघोर्वंशः क्व तं परगृहोषिता ।
अन्यस्मै हृदयं देहि नाऽनभीष्टे घटामहे ॥

Karandikar ''Where (is) the renowned race of Raghu and where (are) {you who stayed in the enemys house ? Give your heart to someone else ; we do not indulge in undesired things.

२०.२५

यथेष्टं चर वैदेहि पन्थानः सन्तु ते शिवाः ।
कामास्तेऽन्यत्र तायन्तां विशङ्कां त्यज मद्गताम् ॥

Karandikar ''Act as you wish, Oh Videha Princess; may your ways be auspicious ; let your desires develop elsewhere; give up (all) fear from me".

२०.२६

ततः प्रगदिता वाक्यं मैथिलाऽभिजना नृपम् ।
स्त्रीसामान्येन सम्भूता शङ्का मयि विमुच्यताम् ॥

Karandikar Then (Sita), whose relatives were from Mithila, addressed this utterance to Rama, May the suspicion arising (as if) from a common woman be given up with reference to me.

२०.२७

दैवाद्बिभीहि काकुत्स्थ जिह्रीहि त्वं तथा जनात् ।
मिथ्या मामभिसंक्रुध्य न्नवशां शत्रुणा हृताम् ॥

Karandikar ''Fear fate , so also shy away from the people, Oh Rama, who are, in vain, getting enraged with me who was help less and (hence) kidnapped by the enemy.

२०.२८

चेतसस्त्वयि वृत्तिर्मे शरीरं रक्षसा हृतम् ।
विदांकुर्वन्तु सम्यञ्चो देवाः सत्यमिदं वचः ॥

Karandikar The activity of my mind rests on you; (only) the body was abducted by the demon; let the equanimous gods, verify this true statement.

२०.२९

त्वं पुनीहि पुनीहीति पुनन्वायो जगत्त्रयम् ।
चरन्देहेषु भूतानां विद्धि मे बुद्धिविप्लवम् ॥

Karandikar Oh Wind, you who purify the three worlds (saying), 'do purify, do purify' ( and ) circulate in the bodies of beings, ascertain (if there is any) aberration in my mind.

२०.३०

खमट द्यामटाऽटोर्वीमित्यटन्त्योऽतिपावनाः ।
यूयमापो विजानीत मनोवृत्तिं शुभां मम ॥

Karandikar 'Oh extremely purifying waters that wander about (saying), 'traverse the sky, traverse the heaven, traverse the earth', ascertain my auspicious mental disposition.

२०.३१

जगन्ति धत्स्व धत्स्वेति दधती त्वं वसुन्धरे ।
अवेहि मम चारित्रं नक्तंदिवमविच्युतम् ॥

Karandikar "Oh Earth, you who sustain the worlds, (saying) do support, do support, know my character which has not swerved (fallen) day and night.

२०.३२

रसान्संहर दीप्यस्व ध्वान्तं जहि नभो भ्रम ।
इतीहमानस्तिग्मांऽशो वृत्तं ज्ञातुं घटस्व मे ॥

Karandikar ''Oh Sun, you who exert (saying), 'withdraw (suck up) the water, shine, destroy darkness, traverse the sky, try to under stand my behaviour.

२०.३३

स्वर्गे विद्यस्व भुव्याऽऽस्व भुजङ्गनिलये भव ।
एवं वसन्ममाऽऽकाश संबुध्यस्व कृताऽकृतम् ॥

Karandikar ''Oh sky, who abide (saying), exist in the heaven, stay on the earth, be in the abode of the snakes, ascertain my commissions and omissions .

२०.३४

चितां कुरु च सौमित्रे व्यसनस्याऽस्य भेषजम् ।
रामस्तुष्यतु मे वाऽद्य पापां प्लुष्णातु वाऽनलः ॥

Karandikar And Oh Laksmana, prepare a burning pyre, the antidote of this censure; let either Rama be satisfied with me today or may the fire burn (me) out, the sinner."

२०.३५

राघवस्य मतेनाऽथ लक्ष्मणेनाऽऽचितां चिताम् ।
दृष्ट्वा प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य रामं प्रगदिता वचः ॥

Karandikar Then after seeing the burning pyre arranged by Laksmana with the consent of Rama, Sita, having gone round Rama from the right, addressed a declaration to Rama :

२०.३६

प्रवपाणि वपुर्वह्नौ रासाऽहं शाङ्किता त्वया ।
सर्वे विदन्तु शृण्वन्तु भवन्तः स प्लवङ्गमाः ॥

Karandikar Oh Rama, suspected by you, I sacrifice my body in the fire. May you all, including the monkeys , understand and listen.

२०.३७

मां दुष्टां ज्वलितवपुः प्लुषाण वह्ने
संरक्ष क्षतमलिनां सुहृद्यथा वा ।
एषाऽहं क्रतुषु वसोर्यथाऽऽज्यधारा
त्वां प्राप्ता विधिवदुदीर्णदीप्तिमालम् ॥

Karandikar Oh Fire of a blazing form, burn me out, (if I be) violated (Sullied); otherwise protect (me) like a friend (who is) disproved (to be) impure. Here, like the stream (trickle) of ghee for Vasu, have I, according to the prescribed rites, come to you who have shot out a garland of flames. ”
