भट्टिकाव्यम् (रावणवधः) — एकोनविंशः सर्गः | bhaṭṭikāvyam (rāvaṇavadhaḥ)

अपमन्युस्ततो वाक्यं पौलस्त्यो राममुक्तवान् ।
अशोच्योऽपि व्रजन्नस्तं सनाभिर्दुनुयान्न किम् ॥

Karandikar Thereafter Vibhisana, whose grief had subsided, addressed Rama (these) words : Might a couterine brother, though not worth lamenting, not cause grief, (while) reaching his end ?

१९.२

तं नो देवा विधेयासुर्येन रावणवद्वयम् ।
सपत्नांश्चऽधिजीयास्म संग्रामे च मृषीमहि ॥

Karandikar May the gods arrange that, for us, by which we, like Ravana, may vanquish enemies and die in battle.

१९.३

क्रियेरंश्च दशाऽऽस्येन यथाऽन्येनाऽपि नः कुले ।
देवद्यञ्चो नराऽहारा न्यञ्चश्च द्विषतां गणाः ॥

Karandikar May someone else in our family, like Ravana, make the demons wage war with the gods and render the hosts of gods lowly.

१९.४

स एव घारयेत्प्राणानीदृशे बन्धुविप्लवे ।
भवेदाश्वासको यस्य सुहृच्छक्तो भवादृशः ॥

Karandikar ''He alone would sustain (his) life-breaths in such a ruin of (his) kinsmen, who has a capable friend like your honour for his comforter.

१९.५

म्रियेयोर्ध्वं मुहूर्ताद्धि न स्यास्त्वं यदि मे गतिः ।
आशंसा च हि नः प्रेते जीवेमदशमूर्धनि ॥

Karandikar I might die in a mahurla if you were not my resort; for we had no desire that we may live after Ravana has passed away.

१९.६

प्रकुर्याम वयं देशे गर्ह्यां तत्र कथं रतिम् ।
यत्र विंशति-हस्तस्य न सोदर्यस्य सम्भवः ।
" ॥

Karandikar How may we entertain any damned attachment to that country wherein there is no existence of our twenty-armed couterine brother (Ravana) ?"

१९.७

आमन्त्रयेत तान्प्रह्वान्मन्त्रिणोऽथ विभीषणः ।
गच्छेत त्वरितं लङ्कां राजवेश्म विशेत च ॥

Karandikar Then Vibhisana ordered his submissive ministers: "Quickly go to Lanka and enter the King's palace.

१९.८

आददीध्वं महाऽर्हाणि तत्र वासांसि सत्वराः ।
उद्धुनीयात सत्केतून्निर्हरेताऽग्र्यचन्दनम् ॥

Karandikar ''Therein promptly seize very costly clothings, unfurl huge flags and fetch the best sandalwood.

१९.९

मुञ्चेताऽऽकाशधूपांश्च ग्रथ्नीयात स्रजः शुभाः ।
आनयेताऽमितं दारु कर्पूराऽगुरुकुङ्कुमम् ॥

Karandikar "Fumigate with sky-pervading incense, weave auspi cious garlands, fetch unlimited wood, camphor, sandalwood and saffron.

१९.१०

उह्येरन्यज्ञ पात्राणि ह्रियेत च विभावसुः ।
भ्रियेत चाऽऽज्यमृत्विग्भिः कल्प्येत च समित्कुशम् ॥

Karandikar "Let the sacrificial fire-vessels be carried and fire taken along ; let the ghee be collected and faggots and kusa grass be kept ready by the officiating priests.

१९.११

स्नानीयैः स्नापयेताऽऽशु रम्यैर्लिम्पेत वर्णकैः ।
अलङ्कुर्यात रत्नैश्च रावणाऽर्हैर्दशाऽऽननम् ॥

Karandikar 'Promptly bathe Ravana with bathing materials, smear (him) with attractive unguents and embellish him with jewels worthy of Ravana.

१९.१२

वासयेत सुवासोभ्यां मेध्याभ्यां राक्षसाऽऽधिपम् ।
ऋत्विक्स्रग्विणमादध्यात्प्राङ्मूर्धानं मृगाऽजिने ॥

Karandikar May you perfume the lord of demons with excellent holy scents; let the priests place him wearing a garland, head eastwards, on a deerskin.

१९.१३

यज्ञ-पात्राणि गोत्रेषु चिनुयाच्च यथा-विधि ।
जुहुयाच्च हविर्वह्नौ गायेयुः साम सामगाः ।
" ॥

Karandikar May he place, as per prescriptions, the sacrificial utensils on his limbs and offer an oblation in fire. Let the Sama reciters chant Sama hymns.'"

१९.१४

गत्वाऽथ ते पुरीं लङ्कां कृत्वा सर्वं यथोदितम् ।
समीपेऽन्त्याऽऽहुतेः साऽस्राः प्रोक्तवन्तो विभीषणम् ॥

Karandikar Thereafter, having gone to the city of Lanka and having done everything as per instructions, they, with tears, spoke to Vibhisapa, when the final oblation was nearby.

१९.१५

कृतं सर्वं यथोद्दिष्टं कर्तुं वह्निजलक्रियाम् ।
प्रयतेथा महाराज सह सर्वैः स्वबन्धुभिः ॥

Karandikar "Everything is done as ordered : Oh great king, may you, with all your relatives exert to perform the cremation and the water-offering

१९.१६

अज्ञावन्नोत्सहेथास्त्वं धेया धीरत्वमच्युतम् ।
स्थेयाः कार्येषु बन्धूनां हेयाः शोकोद्भवं तमः ॥

Karandikar "Why do you, likene ignorant person, not get ready: pick up excellent courage ; may you abide by (your) duty to (your) kinsmen and abandon the bewilderment (delusion) arising from grief.

१९.१७

नाऽवकल्प्यमिदं ग्लायेद्यत्कृच्छ्रेषु भवानपि ।
न पृथग्जनवज्जातु प्रमुह्येत्पण्डितो जनः ॥

Karandikar ''This is inconceivable that you too should despond in calamities. A wise person should never be excessively stupified like an ordinary person.

१९.१८

यच्च यत्र भवांस्तिष्ठेत्तत्राऽन्यो रावणस्य न ।
यच्च यत्र भवान्सीदेन्महद्भिस्तद्विगर्हितम् ॥

Karandikar None else of Ravana's (men may stand) wherever and for whatever you may stand; and where and what you may despair ( get disheartened ) aboutis condemned by the magnanimous.

१९.१९

आश्चर्यं यच्च यत्र त्वां प्रब्रूयाम वयं हितम् ।
अपि साक्षात्प्रशिष्यास्त्वं कृच्छ्रेष्विन्द्रपुरोहितम् ॥

Karandikar It is strange that we have to tell you (as to) what is beneficial and where. For, in difficulty, you may (i.e., are able to) instruct (advise) even Brhaspati himself (in person).

१९.२०

कामो जनस्यजह्यास्त्वं प्रमादं नैरृताऽधिप ।
उत द्विषोऽनुशोचेयुर्विप्लवे किमु बान्धवाः ॥

Karandikar Oh lord of demons, it is the peoples will that you should abandon0 (this) lapse (from duty) ; even enemies may lament during (this) calamity; what then (of) kinsmen ?

१९.२१

स भवान्भ्रातृवद्रक्षेद्यथावदखिलं जनम् ।
न भवान्संप्रमुह्येच्चेदाश्वस्युश्च निशाचराः ॥

Karandikar If your majesty would not be stupified and your honour may protect all the people like your brethren, according to convention, then the demons may feel reassured."

१९.२२

ततः स गतवान्कर्तुं भ्रातुरग्नि-जल-क्रियाम् ।
प्रोक्तवान्कृत-कर्तव्यं वचो रामोऽथ राक्षसम् ॥

Karandikar Thereupon, he proceeded to perform the cremation of and give water-offerings to (his) brother. Then Rama addressed (him) who had done his duty, these words, as he (Rama).

१९.२३

अम्भांसि रुक्मकुम्भेन सिञ्चन्मूर्धि समाधिमान् ।
त्वं राजा रक्षसां लङ्का मवेक्षेथा विभीषन ॥

Karandikar —sprinkled waters on his (Vibhisapa's) head with golden pitchers: "Possessed of concentration, you, Oh Vibhisana, the king of the demons, should look after (protect) Lanka.

१९.२४

क्रुद्धाननुनयेः सम्यक्धनैर्लुब्धानुपार्जयेः ।
मानिनो मानयेः काले त्रस्तान्पौलस्त्य सान्त्वयेः ॥

Karandikar You may, Oh Vibhisapa, pacify properly the enraged, win over the avaricious with riches, honour the proud at the proper time (and) console the distressed.

१९.२५

इच्छा मे परमा नन्देः कथं त्वं वृत्रशत्रुवत् ।
इच्छेद्धि सुहृदं सर्वो वृद्धिसंस्थं यतः सुहृत् ॥

Karandikar How would you rejoice Like Indra, (that) is my highest desire; for, every friend will wish (his) friend to remain steady in prosperity.

१९.२६

वर्धिषीष्टाः स्वजातेषु वध्यास्त्वं रिपुसंहतीः ।
भूयास्त्वं गुणिनां मान्यस्तेषां स्थेया व्यवस्थितौ ॥

Karandikar May you rise higher among your own kith and kin ; may you kill hosts of demons; may you become respectable (adorable) to the virtuous and abide by their arrangements (rulings).

१९.२७

धेयास्त्वं सुहृदां प्रीतिं वन्दिषीष्ठा दिवौकसः ।
सोमं पेयाश्च हेयाश्च हिंस्रा हानिकरीः क्रियाः ॥

Karandikar May you sustain the delight of (your) friends, bow to the gods, drink Soma juice) (and) give up harmful actions.

१९.२८

अवसेयाश्च कार्याणि धर्मेण पुरवासिनाम् ।
अनुरागं क्रिया राजन् सदा सर्वगतं जने ॥

Karandikar May you settle the business of the citizens according to rules (Dharma) and, Oh king, may you always bestow all pervading affection on the people.

१९.२९

घानिषीष्ट त्वया मन्युर्ग्राहिषीष्ट समुन्नतिः ।
रक्षोभिर्दर्शिषीष्ठास्त्वं द्रक्षीरन्भवता च ते ॥

Karandikar May grief be destroyed; may all-round progress be seized by you ; may you be seen by the demons and they be seen by your Majesty.

१९.३०

मन्युं वध्या भट-वध-कृतं बाल-वृद्धस्य राजन् ! शास्त्राऽभिज्ञाः सदसि सु-धियः सन्निधिं ते क्रियासुः ।
संरंसीष्ठाः सुर-मुनि-गते वर्त्मनि प्राज्य-धर्मे संभुत्सीष्ठाः सु-नय-नयनैर्विद्विषामीहितानि ।
" ॥

Karandikar "Oh King, smother the grief of the children and the aged produced by the slaying of a warrior. Let intelligent (men) well-versed in the exigencies of the sciences be by your side in the assembly; may you attain delight in (following the path abounding in righteousness ard traversed by the gods and the sages; (and), by means of the eyes in the form of good policies, may you understand well the motives (intentions) of your enemies."
