महाभारतम् — ९.४४

वैशंपायन उवाच ।

ततोऽभिषेकसंभारान्सर्वान्संभृत्य शास्त्रतः ।
बृहस्पतिः समिद्धेऽग्नौ जुहावाज्यं यथाविधि ॥

M N Dutt Vaishampayana said "Collecting all articles sanctioned by Shastras for the ceremony of investiture. Brihaspati duly poured libations of the burning fire.

९.४४.२

ततो हिमवता दत्ते मणिप्रवरशोभिते ।
दिव्यरत्नाचिते दिव्ये निषण्णः परमासने ॥

M N Dutt Himavat gave a seat which was set with many costly gems. Kartikeya was made a site on that sacred and best of seats set with excellent gems.

९.४४.३

सर्वमङ्गलसंभारैर्विधिमन्त्रपुरस्कृतम् ।
आभिषेचनिकं द्रव्यं गृहीत्वा देवतागणाः ॥

M N Dutt The gods collected there all sorts of sacred articles, with due rites and mantras, that were necessary for the ceremony.

९.४४.४

इन्द्राविष्णू महावीर्यौ सूर्याचन्द्रमसौ तथा ।
धाता चैव विधाता च तथा चैवानिलानलौ ॥

९.४४.५

पूष्णा भगेनार्यम्णा च अंशेन च विवस्वता ।
रुद्रश्च सहितो धीमान्मित्रेण वरुणेन च ॥

९.४४.६

रुद्रैर्वसुभिरादित्यैरश्विभ्यां च वृतः प्रभुः ।
विश्वेदेवैर्मरुद्भिश्च साध्यैश्च पितृभिः सह ॥

९.४४.७

गन्धर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च यक्षराक्षसपन्नगैः ।
देवर्षिभिरसंख्येयैस्तथा ब्रह्मर्षिभिर्वरैः ॥

९.४४.८

वैखानसैर्वालखिल्यैर्वाय्वाहारैर्मरीचिपैः ।
भृगुभिश्चाङ्गिरोभिश्च यतिभिश्च महात्मभिः ।
सर्वैर्विद्याधरैः पुण्यैर्योगसिद्धैस्तथा वृतः ॥

९.४४.९

पितामहः पुलस्त्यश्च पुलहश्च महातपाः ।
अङ्गिराः कश्यपोऽत्रिश्च मरीचिर्भृगुरेव च ॥

९.४४.१०

क्रतुर्हरः प्रचेताश्च मनुर्दक्षस्तथैव च ।
ऋतवश्च ग्रहाश्चैव ज्योतींषि च विशां पते ॥

९.४४.११

मूर्तिमत्यश्च सरितो वेदाश्चैव सनातनाः ।
समुद्राश्च ह्रदाश्चैव तीर्थानि विविधानि च ।
पृथिवी द्यौर्दिशश्चैव पादपाश्च जनाधिप ॥

९.४४.१२

अदितिर्देवमाता च ह्रीः श्रीः स्वाहा सरस्वती ।
उमा शची सिनीवाली तथा चानुमतिः कुहूः ।
राका च धिषणा चैव पत्न्यश्चान्या दिवौकसाम् ॥

९.४४.१३

हिमवांश्चैव विन्ध्यश्च मेरुश्चानेकशृङ्गवान् ।
ऐरावतः सानुचरः कलाः काष्ठास्तथैव च ।
मासार्धमासा ऋतवस्तथा रात्र्यहनी नृप ॥

९.४४.१४

उच्चैःश्रवा हयश्रेष्ठो नागराजश्च वामनः ।
अरुणो गरुडश्चैव वृक्षाश्चौषधिभिः सह ॥

९.४४.१५

धर्मश्च भगवान्देवः समाजग्मुर्हि संगताः ।
कालो यमश्च मृत्युश्च यमस्यानुचराश्च ये ॥

९.४४.१६

बहुलत्वाच्च नोक्ता ये विविधा देवतागणाः ।
ते कुमाराभिषेकार्थं समाजग्मुस्ततस्ततः ॥

M N Dutt I do not mention the various other gods that came there lest the list be a heavy one. All of them came to that ceremony for investing Kartikeya with the dignity of generalissimo.

९.४४.१७

जगृहुस्ते तदा राजन्सर्व एव दिवौकसः ।
आभिषेचनिकं भाण्डं मङ्गलानि च सर्वशः ॥

M N Dutt All the celestials, O king brought there every thing necessary for the ceremony and every sacred article.

९.४४.१८

दिव्यसंभारसंयुक्तैः कलशैः काञ्चनैर्नृप ।
सरस्वतीभिः पुण्याभिर्दिव्यतोयाभिरेव तु ॥

M N Dutt Gladly the celestials made that great youth, that terror of the Asuras, the generalissimo of the celestial hosts, after pouring upon his head the sacred and excellent water of the Sarasvati from golden jars that contained other sacred articles necessary for the purpose.

९.४४.१९

अभ्यषिञ्चन्कुमारं वै संप्रहृष्टा दिवौकसः ।
सेनापतिं महात्मानमसुराणां भयावहम् ॥

९.४४.२०

पुरा यथा महाराज वरुणं वै जलेश्वरम् ।
तथाभ्यषिञ्चद्भगवान्ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः ।
कश्यपश्च महातेजा ये चान्ये नानुकीर्तिताः ॥

M N Dutt The Grandfather of the words, viz., Brahman and Kashyapa of great energy and all others, all poured water upon Skanda even as, O king, the gods had poured water on the head of Varuna, the lord of waters, when placing him in this dominion.

९.४४.२१

तस्मै ब्रह्मा ददौ प्रीतो बलिनो वातरंहसः ।
कामवीर्यधरान्सिद्धान्महापारिषदान्प्रभुः ॥

M N Dutt The lord Brahman then, with a pleased heart, gave to Skanda four powerful companions, gifted with speed of the wind, crowned with ascetic success and gifted with energy which they could increase at will.

९.४४.२२

नन्दिषेणं लोहिताक्षं घण्टाकर्णं च संमतम् ।
चतुर्थमस्यानुचरं ख्यातं कुमुदमालिनम् ॥

M N Dutt They named Nandisena and Lohitaksha and Ghantakarna and Kumudamalin.

९.४४.२३

ततः स्थाणुं महावेगं महापारिषदं क्रतुम् ।
मायाशतधरं कामं कामवीर्यबलान्वितम् ।
ददौ स्कन्दाय राजेन्द्र सुरारिविनिबर्हणम् ॥

M N Dutt The lord Sthanu, O king, gave to Skanda a companion possessed of great impetuosity, capable of producing a hundred illusions and gifted with might and energy that he could increase at will. And he was the great destroyer if Asuras.

९.४४.२४

स हि देवासुरे युद्धे दैत्यानां भीमकर्मणाम् ।
जघान दोर्भ्यां संक्रुद्धः प्रयुतानि चतुर्दश ॥

M N Dutt In the great battle between the gods and the Asuras, this companion that Sthanu gave, worked up with ire killed with his hands alone, fourteen millions of Daityas of terrible deeds. were

९.४४.२५

तथा देवा ददुस्तस्मै सेनां नैरृतसंकुलाम् ।
देवशत्रुक्षयकरीमजय्यां विश्वरूपिणीम् ॥

M N Dutt The god then made over to Skanda he celestial host, invincible containing many celestial troops, capable of destroying the enemies of the gods and of forms like that of Vishnu.

९.४४.२६

जयशब्दं ततश्चक्रुर्देवाः सर्वे सवासवाः ।
गन्धर्वयक्षरक्षांसि मुनयः पितरस्तथा ॥

M N Dutt The gods then, with Vasava at their head and the Gandharvas, the Yakshas, the Rakshasas, the Munis and the Pitris, all exclaimed-"Victory of Skanda.'

९.४४.२७

यमः प्रादादनुचरौ यमकालोपमावुभौ ।
उन्माथं च प्रमाथं च महावीर्यौ महाद्युती ॥

M N Dutt Then Yama gave him two companions, both of whom resembled Death, viz., Unmatha and Pramatha, endued with great energy and splendour.

९.४४.२८

सुभ्राजो भास्करश्चैव यौ तौ सूर्यानुयायिनौ ।
तौ सूर्यः कार्त्तिकेयाय ददौ प्रीतः प्रतापवान् ॥

M N Dutt Endued with great prowess, Surya, gladly gave Kartikeya two of his followers named Subhraja and Bhasvara.

९.४४.२९

कैलासशृङ्गसंकाशौ श्वेतमाल्यानुलेपनौ ।
सोमोऽप्यनुचरौ प्रादान्मणिं सुमणिमेव च ॥

M N Dutt Soma also gave him two companions, viz., Mani and Sumani, both of whom looked like summits of tea Kailasa mountain and always used white garlands and white unguents.

९.४४.३०

ज्वालाजिह्वं तथा ज्योतिरात्मजाय हुताशनः ।
ददावनुचरौ शूरौ परसैन्यप्रमाथिनौ ॥

M N Dutt Agni gave him two heroic companions, grinders of hostile armies, who were named Jvalajihva and Jyoti.

९.४४.३१

परिघं च वटं चैव भीमं च सुमहाबलम् ।
दहतिं दहनं चैव प्रचण्डौ वीर्यसंमतौ ।
अंशोऽप्यनुचरान्पञ्च ददौ स्कन्दाय धीमते ॥

M N Dutt Ansha gave the intelligent Skanda five companions, Parigha and Vata and Bhima of great strength and Dahati and Dahana both of whom were highly dreadful and energetic.

९.४४.३२

उत्क्रोशं पङ्कजं चैव वज्रदण्डधरावुभौ ।
ददावनलपुत्राय वासवः परवीरहा ।
तौ हि शत्रून्महेन्द्रस्य जघ्नतुः समरे बहून् ॥

९.४४.३३

चक्रं विक्रमकं चैव संक्रमं च महाबलम् ।
स्कन्दाय त्रीननुचरान्ददौ विष्णुर्महायशाः ॥

९.४४.३४

वर्धनं नन्दनं चैव सर्वविद्याविशारदौ ।
स्कन्दाय ददतुः प्रीतावश्विनौ भरतर्षभ ॥

९.४४.३५

कुन्दनं कुसुमं चैव कुमुदं च महायशाः ।
डम्बराडम्बरौ चैव ददौ धाता महात्मने ॥

M N Dutt The illustrious Dhatri gave that high-souled one five companions, viz., Kunda, Kushuma, Kumuda, Dambara and Adambara.

९.४४.३६

वक्रानुवक्रौ बलिनौ मेषवक्त्रौ बलोत्कटौ ।
ददौ त्वष्टा महामायौ स्कन्दायानुचरौ वरौ ॥

M N Dutt Tashtri give Skanda two companions named Chakra and Anuchakra both of whom were very powerful.

९.४४.३७

सुव्रतं सत्यसंधं च ददौ मित्रो महात्मने ।
कुमाराय महात्मानौ तपोविद्याधरौ प्रभुः ॥

M N Dutt The lord Mitra gave the high-souled Kumara two illustrious companions named Suvrata and Satyasandha both of whom were highly learned and endued with ascetic merit, possessed of handsome features, capable of granting boons and well known over the three worlds.

९.४४.३८

सुदर्शनीयौ वरदौ त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतौ ।
सुप्रभं च महात्मानं शुभकर्माणमेव च ।
कार्त्तिकेयाय संप्रादाद्विधाता लोकविश्रुतौ ॥

M N Dutt Vidhatri gave Kartikeya two companions, viz., the great Suprabha and Shubhakarman.

९.४४.३९

पालितकं कालिकं च महामायाविनावुभौ ।
पूषा च पार्षदौ प्रादात्कार्त्तिकेयाय भारत ॥

M N Dutt Pushan gave him iwo companions, viz., Panitraka and Kalika, both gifted with grcat powers of illusions,

९.४४.४०

बलं चातिबलं चैव महावक्त्रौ महाबलौ ।
प्रददौ कार्त्तिकेयाय वायुर्भरतसत्तम ॥

M N Dutt Vayu gave him, O best of the Bharatas, two companions, viz., Vala and Atibala, possessed of great inight and very an large mouths.

९.४४.४१

घसं चातिघसं चैव तिमिवक्त्रौ महाबलौ ।
प्रददौ कार्त्तिकेयाय वरुणः सत्यसंगरः ॥

M N Dutt Vayu gave him, O best of the Bharatas, two companions, viz., Vala and Atibala, possessed of great inight and very an large mouths.

९.४४.४२

सुवर्चसं महात्मानं तथैवाप्यतिवर्चसम् ।
हिमवान्प्रददौ राजन्हुताशनसुताय वै ॥

M N Dutt Himavat gave Agni's son two companions, O king, viz., Suvarchas and Ativarchas.

९.४४.४३

काञ्चनं च महात्मानं मेघमालिनमेव च ।
ददावनुचरौ मेरुरग्निपुत्राय भारत ॥

M N Dutt Meru, O Bharata, gave him two companions named Kanchana and Meghamalin.

९.४४.४४

स्थिरं चातिस्थिरं चैव मेरुरेवापरौ ददौ ।
महात्मनेऽग्निपुत्राय महाबलपराक्रमौ ॥

M N Dutt Manu also gave Agni's son two others gifted with great strength and power viz., Sthira and Asthira.

९.४४.४५

उच्छ्रितं चातिशृङ्गं च महापाषाणयोधिनौ ।
प्रददावग्निपुत्राय विन्ध्यः पारिषदावुभौ ॥

M N Dutt Vindhya gave Angi's son two companions named Uchchhrita and Agnishringa both of whom fought with stones.

९.४४.४६

संग्रहं विग्रहं चैव समुद्रोऽपि गदाधरौ ।
प्रददावग्निपुत्राय महापारिषदावुभौ ॥

M N Dutt Ocean gave himn two powerful companions named Sangraha and Vigraha both armed with mace.

९.४४.४७

उन्मादं पुष्पदन्तं च शङ्कुकर्णं तथैव च ।
प्रददावग्निपुत्राय पार्वती शुभदर्शना ॥

M N Dutt The beautiful Parvati gavc Agni's son Unmada and Pushpadanta and Shankukarna.

९.४४.४८

जयं महाजयं चैव नागौ ज्वलनसूनवे ।
प्रददौ पुरुषव्याघ्र वासुकिः पन्नगेश्वरः ॥

M N Dutt Vasuki the king of the serpents, O king, gave the son of Agni two snakes named Jaya and Mahajaya.

९.४४.४९

एवं साध्याश्च रुद्राश्च वसवः पितरस्तथा ।
सागराः सरितश्चैव गिरयश्च महाबलाः ॥

M N Dutt Similarly the Saddhyas, the Rudra, the Vasus, the Pitris, the Seas, the Rivers and the Mountains, gave commanders of forces, armed with lances and battle axes and adorned with various kinds or ornaments.
