महाभारतम् — ९.२०

संजय उवाच ।

तस्मिंस्तु निहते शूरे शाल्वे समितिशोभने ।
तवाभज्यद्बलं वेगाद्वातेनेव महाद्रुमः ॥

M N Dutt Sanjaya said After the heroic Shalya, that flower of the court, had been killed your ariny were dispersed like a huge tree broken by the force of the storm.

९.२०.२

तत्प्रभग्नं बलं दृष्ट्वा कृतवर्मा महारथः ।
दधार समरे शूरः शत्रुसैन्यं महाबलः ॥

M N Dutt Seeing the army routed, the great carwarrior, Kritavarına, opposed the hostile force in that battle.

९.२०.३

संनिवृत्तास्तु ते शूरा दृष्ट्वा सात्वतमाहवे ।
शैलोपमं स्थितं राजन्कीर्यमाणं शरैर्युधि ॥

M N Dutt Seeing the Satwata hero, O king, standing in battle like a hill though struck with arrows (by the foe), the Kuru heroes, who had fled away, rallied and came back.

९.२०.४

ततः प्रववृते युद्धं कुरूणां पाण्डवैः सह ।
निवृत्तानां महाराज मृत्युं कृत्वा निवर्तनम् ॥

M N Dutt Then, O king, an encounter which took place between the Pandavas and the Kurus who were determined upon meeting with death.

९.२०.५

तत्राश्चर्यमभूद्युद्धं सात्वतस्य परैः सह ।
यदेको वारयामास पाण्डुसेनां दुरासदाम् ॥

M N Dutt Wonderful was that fierce encounter which took place between the Satwata hero and his foes, since alone hc opposed the invincible ariny of the Pandavas.

९.२०.६

तेषामन्योन्यसुहृदां कृते कर्मणि दुष्करे ।
सिंहनादः प्रहृष्टानां दिवःस्पृक्सुमहानभूत् ॥

M N Dutt Seeing this most difficult feat friends, filled with delight, set up leonine shouts that sceined to reach the very heavens.

९.२०.७

तेन शब्देन वित्रस्तान्पाञ्चालान्भरतर्षभ ।
शिनेर्नप्ता महाबाहुरन्वपद्यत सात्यकिः ॥

M N Dutt At those sounds and Panchalas, O foremost of Bharata's race, were filled with fear. Then Satyaki, the grandson of Shini, came there.

९.२०.८

स समासाद्य राजानं क्षेमधूर्तिं महाबलम् ।
सप्तभिर्निशितैर्बाणैरनयद्यमसादनम् ॥

M N Dutt Approaching the powerful king Kshemakirti, Satyaki killed him with seven keen arrows.

९.२०.९

तमायान्तं महाबाहुं प्रवपन्तं शिताञ्शरान् ।
जवेनाभ्यपतद्धीमान्हार्दिक्यः शिनिपुंगवम् ॥

M N Dutt Then the intelligent son of Hridika, rushed quickly against the best of Shinis, that mightyarmed warrior, as the latter came discharging his whetted shafts.

९.२०.१०

तौ सिंहाविव नर्दन्तौ धन्विनौ रथिनां वरौ ।
अन्योन्यमभ्यधावेतां शस्त्रप्रवरधारिणौ ॥

M N Dutt Those two bowmen, those two foremost of car-warriors roared like lions and met each other, both being armed with best of weapons.

९.२०.११

पाण्डवाः सह पाञ्चालैर्योधाश्चान्ये नृपोत्तमाः ।
प्रेक्षकाः समपद्यन्त तयोः पुरुषसिंहयोः ॥

M N Dutt The Pandavas, the Panchalas and the other warriors, witnessed that terrible encounter between the two heroes.

९.२०.१२

नाराचैर्वत्सदन्तैश्च वृष्ण्यन्धकमहारथौ ।
अभिजघ्नतुरन्योन्यं प्रहृष्टाविव कुञ्जरौ ॥

M N Dutt Those two Vrishni and Andhaka heroes, like two elephants filled with delight, struck each other with long arrows and arrows with calf-toothed heads.

९.२०.१३

चरन्तौ विविधान्मार्गान्हार्दिक्यशिनिपुंगवौ ।
मुहुरन्तर्दधाते तौ बाणवृष्ट्या परस्परम् ॥

M N Dutt Moving about in various ways the son of Hridika and that foremost of Shini's race soon covered each other with showers of arrows.

९.२०.१४

चापवेगबलोद्धूतान्मार्गणान्वृष्णिसिंहयोः ।
आकाशे समपश्याम पतंगानिव शीघ्रगान् ॥

M N Dutt The arrows of those two Vrishni chiefs, shot off their bows, appeared like swiftlycoursing insects in the sky.

९.२०.१५

तमेकं सत्यकर्माणमासाद्य हृदिकात्मजः ।
अविध्यन्निशितैर्बाणैश्चतुर्भिश्चतुरो हयान् ॥

M N Dutt Approaching the powerful Satyaki of true prowess, the son of Hridika struck the four horses of the former with four keen arrows.

९.२०.१६

स दीर्घबाहुः संक्रुद्धस्तोत्त्रार्दित इव द्विपः ।
अष्टाभिः कृतवर्माणमविध्यत्परमेषुभिः ॥

M N Dutt Enraged at this like an elephant struck with a lance, the long-armed Satyaki struck Kritavarman with eight best arrows.

९.२०.१७

ततः पूर्णायतोत्सृष्टैः कृतवर्मा शिलाशितैः ।
सात्यकिं त्रिभिराहत्य धनुरेकेन चिच्छिदे ॥

M N Dutt Then Kritavarman struck Satyaki with three arrows whetted on stone and shot off his bow drawn to its fullest stretch and then cut of his bow with another arrow.

९.२०.१८

निकृत्तं तद्धनुःश्रेष्ठमपास्य शिनिपुंगवः ।
अन्यदादत्त वेगेन शैनेयः सशरं धनुः ॥

M N Dutt Casting off his bow which was thus cut off, that heroe, quickly took up another that was stronger than the first.

९.२०.१९

तदादाय धनुःश्रेष्ठं वरिष्ठः सर्वधन्विनाम् ।
आरोप्य च महावीर्यो महाबुद्धिर्महाबलः ॥

९.२०.२०

अमृष्यमाणो धनुषश्छेदनं कृतवर्मणा ।
कुपितोऽतिरथः शीघ्रं कृतवर्माणमभ्ययात् ॥

M N Dutt Having taken up that best of bows and stringed it, that foremost of all bowmen, that warrior of great energy, intelligence and strength, unable to bear the cutting of his bow by Kritavarman, quickly and furiously rushed against the latter.

९.२०.२१

ततः सुनिशितैर्बाणैर्दशभिः शिनिपुंगवः ।
जघान सूतमश्वांश्च ध्वजं च कृतवर्मणः ॥

M N Dutt With ten keen arrows that Shini chief then struck the driver, the horses and the standard of Kritavarman.

९.२०.२२

ततो राजन्महेष्वासः कृतवर्मा महारथः ।
हताश्वसूतं संप्रेक्ष्य रथं हेमपरिष्कृतम् ॥

M N Dutt At this, O king, the great bowinan and carwarrior Kritavarman, beholding his golddecked car made driverless and horseless, was filled with rage. Taking up a pointed lance, he discharged it with all might at that best of Shini's race, desirous of killing him.

९.२०.२३

रोषेण महताविष्टः शूलमुद्यम्य मारिष ।
चिक्षेप भुजवेगेन जिघांसुः शिनिपुंगवम् ॥

M N Dutt At this, O king, the great bowinan and carwarrior Kritavarman, beholding his golddecked car made driverless and horseless, was filled with rage. Taking up a pointed lance, he discharged it with all might at that best of Shini's race, desirous of killing him.

९.२०.२४

तच्छूलं सात्वतो ह्याजौ निर्भिद्य निशितैः शरैः ।
चूर्णितं पातयामास मोहयन्निव माधवम् ।
ततोऽपरेण भल्लेन हृद्येनं समताडयत् ॥

M N Dutt Striking that lance with many keen arrows, Satyaki sundered it off into pieces and caused it to fall down. Stupefying Kritavarinan of Madhu's race with another broad-headed arrow he then struck Kritavarman on the chest.

९.२०.२५

स युद्धे युयुधानेन हताश्वो हतसारथिः ।
कृतवर्मा कृतास्त्रेण धरणीमन्वपद्यत ॥

९.२०.२६

तस्मिन्सात्यकिना वीरे द्वैरथे विरथीकृते ।
समपद्यत सर्वेषां सैन्यानां सुमहद्भयम् ॥

M N Dutt The heroic Kritavarman, having been deprived of his car by Satyaki in that single combat, all the (Kaurava) soldiers were possessed by a great fear.

९.२०.२७

पुत्रस्य तव चात्यर्थं विषादः समपद्यत ।
हतसूते हताश्वे च विरथे कृतवर्मणि ॥

M N Dutt A mighty fear overtook your sons, when Kritavarman was thus made steedless and driverless and carless.

९.२०.२८

हताश्वं च समालक्ष्य हतसूतमरिंदमम् ।
अभ्यधावत्कृपो राजञ्जिघांसुः शिनिपुंगवम् ॥

M N Dutt Beholding that chastiser of foes made steedless and driverless, Kripa, O king, rushed at that best of Shini's race, desirous of killing him.

९.२०.२९

तमारोप्य रथोपस्थे मिषतां सर्वधन्विनाम् ।
अपोवाह महाबाहुस्तूर्णमायोधनादपि ॥

M N Dutt Taking Kritavarman upon his car before all the bowmen, the mighty-armed Kripa took him away from the battlefield.

९.२०.३०

शैनेयेऽधिष्ठिते राजन्विरथे कृतवर्मणि ।
दुर्योधनबलं सर्वं पुनरासीत्पराङ्मुखम् ॥

M N Dutt The king of the Madras being slain and upon Kritavarma having been made carless, the entire arıny of Duryodhana fled away from the battle field.

९.२०.३१

तत्परे नावबुध्यन्त सैन्येन रजसावृते ।
तावकाः प्रद्रुता राजन्दुर्योधनमृते नृपम् ॥

M N Dutt The enemy, however, did not see it for the Kuru army was then covered with a cloud of dust. All your warriors fled, O king, except king Duryodhana.

९.२०.३२

दुर्योधनस्तु संप्रेक्ष्य भग्नं स्वबलमन्तिकात् ।
जवेनाभ्यपतत्तूर्णं सर्वांश्चैको न्यवारयत् ॥

M N Dutt Then seeing his army routed Duryodhana, alone, resisted all the Parthas advancing furiously.

९.२०.३३

पाण्डूंश्च सर्वान्संक्रुद्धो धृष्टद्युम्नं च पार्षतम् ।
शिखण्डिनं द्रौपदेयान्पाञ्चालानां च ये गणाः ॥

९.२०.३४

केकयान्सोमकांश्चैव पाञ्चालांश्चैव मारिष ।
असंभ्रमं दुराधर्षः शितैरस्त्रैरवारयत् ॥

९.२०.३५

अतिष्ठदाहवे यत्तः पुत्रस्तव महाबलः ।
यथा यज्ञे महानग्निर्मन्त्रपूतः प्रकाशयन् ॥

९.२०.३६

तं परे नाभ्यवर्तन्त मर्त्या मृत्युमिवाहवे ।
अथान्यं रथमास्थाय हार्दिक्यः समपद्यत ॥

M N Dutt His enemies could not approach him then, like creatures unable to approach the Death. Then the son of Hridika came there, on another car.
