महाभारतम् — ९.१३

संजय उवाच ।

अर्जुनो द्रौणिना विद्धो युद्धे बहुभिरायसैः ।
तस्य चानुचरैः शूरैस्त्रिगर्तानां महारथैः ।
द्रौणिं विव्याध समरे त्रिभिरेव शिलीमुखैः ॥

M N Dutt Sanjaya said In the meantime Arjuna, in that battle, struck with many arrows by the son of Drona as also by the latter's followers the heroic and mighty car-warriors among the Trigartas, pierced Drona's son in return with three arrows and each of the others with two. Again, the mighty armed Dhananjaya covered his enemies with shower of arrows.

९.१३.२

तथेतरान्महेष्वासान्द्वाभ्यां द्वाभ्यां धनंजयः ।
भूयश्चैव महाबाहुः शरवर्षैरवाकिरत् ॥

९.१३.३

शरकण्टकितास्ते तु तावका भरतर्षभ ।
न जहुः समरे पार्थं वध्यमानाः शितैः शरैः ॥

M N Dutt Though struck with keen shafts and thought they looked like porcupines on account of those arrows sticking to their body still your soldiers, O foremost of Bharatas did not fly from Partha in that battle.

९.१३.४

तेऽर्जुनं रथवंशेन द्रोणपुत्रपुरोगमाः ।
अयोधयन्त समरे परिवार्य महारथाः ॥

M N Dutt Led by Drona's son they surrounded that great car-warrior and fought with him discharging many arrows.

तैस्तु क्षिप्ताः शरा राजन्कार्तस्वरविभूषिताः ।
अर्जुनस्य रथोपस्थं पूरयामासुरञ्जसा ॥

M N Dutt The gold-decked arrows, O king, shot by them, quickly filled Arjuna's car.

९.१३.६

तथा कृष्णौ महेष्वासौ वृषभौ सर्वधन्विनाम् ।
शरैर्वीक्ष्य वितुन्नाङ्गौ प्रहृष्टौ युद्धदुर्मदौ ॥

M N Dutt Beholding those two great bowmen, those two foremost of all warriors, viz., the two Krishnas, covered with arrows, those invincible (Kaurava) warriors filled with joy.

९.१३.७

कूबरं रथचक्राणि ईषा योक्त्राणि चाभिभो ।
युगं चैवानुकर्षं च शरभूतमभूत्तदा ॥

M N Dutt The Kubera, the wheels, the shaft, the terraces, the yoke and the Anukarsha of Arjuna's car, were covered with arrows.

९.१३.८

नैतादृशं दृष्टपूर्वं राजन्नैव च नः श्रुतम् ।
यादृशं तत्र पार्थस्य तावकाः संप्रचक्रिरे ॥

M N Dutt Never before, O king, had been either seen or heard the like of what your warriors then did unto Partha.

९.१३.९

स रथः सर्वतो भाति चित्रपुङ्खैः शितैः शरैः ।
उल्काशतैः संप्रदीप्तं विमानमिव भूतले ॥

M N Dutt That car shone with those keen arrows of beautiful wings like a celestial car, blazing with hundreds of torches dropped on the carth.

९.१३.१०

ततोऽर्जुनो महाराज शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ।
अवाकिरत्तां पृतनां मेघो वृष्ट्या यथाचलम् ॥

M N Dutt Then Arjuna, O king, covered his enemies with showers of straight arrows like a cloud pouring torrents of rain on a mountain.

९.१३.११

ते वध्यमानाः समरे पार्थनामाङ्कितैः शरैः ।
पार्थभूतममन्यन्त प्रेक्षमाणास्तथाविधम् ॥

M N Dutt Struck in that battle with arrows with Partha's name engraven on them those heroes regarded the battle field as full of Parthas.

९.१३.१२

ततोऽद्भुतशरज्वालो धनुःशब्दानिलो महान् ।
सेनेन्धनं ददाहाशु तावकं पार्थपावकः ॥

M N Dutt Then the Partha-fire, having arrows for its wonderful flames and the loud twang of Gandiva for the wind that increased it, began to consume the fuel of your soldiers.

चक्राणां पततां चैव युगानां च धरातले ।
तूणीराणां पताकानां ध्वजानां च रथैः सह ॥

ईषाणामनुकर्षाणां त्रिवेणूनां च भारत ।
अक्षाणामथ योक्त्राणां प्रतोदानां च सर्वशः ॥

९.१३.१५

शिरसां पततां चैव कुण्डलोष्णीषधारिणाम् ।
भुजानां च महाराज स्कन्धानां च समन्ततः ॥

९.१३.१६

छत्राणां व्यजनैः सार्धं मुकुटानां च राशयः ।
समदृश्यन्त पार्थस्य रथमार्गेषु भारत ॥

९.१३.१७

अगम्यरूपा पृथिवी मांसशोणितकर्दमा ।
बभूव भरतश्रेष्ठ रुद्रस्याक्रीडनं यथा ।
भीरूणां त्रासजननी शूराणां हर्षवर्धनी ॥

९.१३.१८

हत्वा तु समरे पार्थः सहस्रे द्वे परंतप ।
रथानां सवरूथानां विधूमोऽग्निरिव ज्वलन् ॥

M N Dutt Having destroyed two thousand cars with their fences, that scorcher of foes, Partha, appeared like a smokeless fire with blazing flames.

९.१३.१९

यथा हि भगवानग्निर्जगद्दग्ध्वा चराचरम् ।
विधूमो दृश्यते राजंस्तथा पार्थो महारथः ॥

M N Dutt As the illustrious Agni blazes forth for destroying the immobile and the immobile creation so. O king, mighty car-warrior Partha looked.

९.१३.२०

द्रौणिस्तु समरे दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवस्य पराक्रमम् ।
रथेनातिपताकेन पाण्डवं प्रत्यवारयत् ॥

M N Dutt Beholding the prowess of Pandu's son in that battle, the son of Drona, on his car adorned with many banners, tried to check him.

९.१३.२१

तावुभौ पुरुषव्याघ्रौ श्वेताश्वौ धन्विनां वरौ ।
समीयतुस्तदा तूर्णं परस्परवधैषिणौ ॥

M N Dutt Those two foremost of men both having white horses yoked to their cars quickly encountered each other, each desirous of killing the other.

९.१३.२२

तयोरासीन्महाराज बाणवर्षं सुदारुणम् ।
जीमूतानां यथा वृष्टिस्तपान्ते भरतर्षभ ॥

M N Dutt The arrows discharged by both became exceedingly terrible and were as thick, O best of Bharatas, as the torrents of rain poured by two masses of clouds at the close of summer.

९.१३.२३

अन्योन्यस्पर्धिनौ तौ तु शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ।
ततक्षतुर्मृधेऽन्योन्यं शृङ्गाभ्यां वृषभाविव ॥

M N Dutt Each challenging the other, those two warriors struck each other with straight arrows in that battle, like a couple of bulls tearing cach other with their horns.

९.१३.२४

तयोर्युद्धं महाराज चिरं सममिवाभवत् ।
अस्त्राणां संगमश्चैव घोरस्तत्राभवन्महान् ॥

M N Dutt The battle between them, O king, was equally fought for a long while. The din of weapons was horrible.

९.१३.२५

ततोऽर्जुनं द्वादशभी रुक्मपुङ्खैः सुतेजनैः ।
वासुदेवं च दशभिर्द्रौणिर्विव्याध भारत ॥

M N Dutt The son of Drona then, O Bharata, struck Arjuna with a dozen of powerful gold winged arrows and Vasudeva with ten.

९.१३.२६

ततः प्रहस्य बीभत्सुर्व्याक्षिपद्गाण्डिवं धनुः ।
मानयित्वा मुहूर्तं च गुरुपुत्रं महाहवे ॥

M N Dutt Having shown for a short while some respect for the preceptor's son in that great battle, Vibhatsu then, smiling, drew his bow Gandiva with force.

९.१३.२७

व्यश्वसूतरथं चक्रे सव्यसाची महारथः ।
मृदुपूर्वं ततश्चैनं त्रिभिर्विव्याध सायकैः ॥

M N Dutt Immediately the great car-warrior Savyasachin deprived his antagonist of his horses, driver and car and without the least exertion struck him with three arrows.

९.१३.२८

हताश्वे तु रथे तिष्ठन्द्रोणपुत्रस्त्वयस्मयम् ।
मुसलं पाण्डुपुत्राय चिक्षेप परिघोपमम् ॥

M N Dutt Staying on that horseless car Drona's son, smiling, discharged, at the son of Pandu a heavy mallet that looked like a dreadful mace with iron spikes.

९.१३.२९

तमापतन्तं सहसा हेमपट्टविभूषितम् ।
चिच्छेद सप्तधा वीरः पार्थः शत्रुनिबर्हणः ॥

M N Dutt Seeing that weapon, which was covered with cloth of gold, come towards him, the heroic Partha, that killer of foes, cut it off into seven pieces.

९.१३.३०

स च्छिन्नं मुसलं दृष्ट्वा द्रौणिः परमकोपनः ।
आददे परिघं घोरं नगेन्द्रशिखरोपमम् ।
चिक्षेप चैव पार्थाय द्रौणिर्युद्धविशारदः ॥

M N Dutt Seeing his mallet cut off, Drona's son, in great anger, took up a terrible mace adorned with iron spikes and looking like a mountain crest. Accomplished in warfare, the son of Drona discharged it at Partha.

९.१३.३१

तमन्तकमिव क्रुद्धं परिघं प्रेक्ष्य पाण्डवः ।
अर्जुनस्त्वरितो जघ्ने पञ्चभिः सायकोत्तमैः ॥

M N Dutt Seeing that mace come towards him like the Destroyer himself in anger Pandu's son Arjuna quickly cut it off with five excellent arrows.

९.१३.३२

स च्छिन्नः पतितो भूमौ पार्थबाणैर्महाहवे ।
दारयन्पृथिवीन्द्राणां मनः शब्देन भारत ॥

M N Dutt Cut off with Partha's shaft in that great battle, that weapon dropped down on earth, riving the hearts, as it were, O Bharata, of the inimical kings.

९.१३.३३

ततोऽपरैस्त्रिभिर्बाणैर्द्रौणिं विव्याध पाण्डवः ।
सोऽतिविद्धो बलवता पार्थेन सुमहाबलः ।
न संभ्रान्तस्तदा द्रौणिः पौरुषे स्वे व्यवस्थितः ॥

M N Dutt The son of Pandu then struck Drona's son with three other arrows. Through deeply cut by the mighty Partha, the highly powerful Drona's son, depending upon his own manliness, displayed on sign of fear or agitation.

९.१३.३४

सुधर्मा तु ततो राजन्भारद्वाजं महारथम् ।
अवाकिरच्छरव्रातैः सर्वक्षत्रस्य पश्यतः ॥

M N Dutt That great car-warrior, the son of Drona then, O king, covered Suratha with showers of arrows before the eyes of all the Kshatriyas.

९.१३.३५

ततस्तु सुरथोऽप्याजौ पाञ्चालानां महारथः ।
रथेन मेघघोषेण द्रौणिमेवाभ्यधावत ॥

M N Dutt At this, Suratha, the great car-warrior among the Panchalas, in that battle, riding upon his car whose rattle was as deep as the muttering of the clouds, proceeded against the son of Drona.

९.१३.३६

विकर्षन्वै धनुः श्रेष्ठं सर्वभारसहं दृढम् ।
ज्वलनाशीविषनिभैः शरैश्चैनमवाकिरत् ॥

M N Dutt Drawing his best of bows capable of standing a great strain, the Panchala hero covered Ashvatthaman with arrows resembling flames of fire or snakes of virulent position.

९.१३.३७

सुरथं तु ततः क्रुद्धमापतन्तं महारथम् ।
चुकोप समरे द्रौणिर्दण्डाहत इवोरगः ॥

M N Dutt Seeing the great car-warrior Suratha proceed towards him in anger the son of Drona was filled with range like a scorched snake.

९.१३.३८

त्रिशिखां भ्रुकुटीं कृत्वा सृक्किणी परिलेलिहन् ।
उद्वीक्ष्य सुरथं रोषाद्धनुर्ज्यामवमृज्य च ।
मुमोच तीक्ष्णं नाराचं यमदण्डसमद्युतिम् ॥

M N Dutt Contracting his eye brow into three lines and licking the corners of his inouth with his tongue, he looked at Suratha in anger and then touched his bowstring and shot a keen clothyard shaft resembling the dreadful rod of Death.

९.१३.३९

स तस्य हृदयं भित्त्वा प्रविवेशातिवेगतः ।
शक्राशनिरिवोत्सृष्टा विदार्य धरणीतलम् ॥

M N Dutt Endued with great force, that shaft struck the heart of Suratha and coming out entered the Earth riving her through like the thunder-bolt of Indra hurled from the sky.

९.१३.४०

ततस्तं पतितं भूमौ नाराचेन समाहतम् ।
वज्रेणेव यथा शृङ्गं पर्वतस्य महाधनम् ॥

M N Dutt Struck with that arrow Suratha fell down on the Earth like mountain crest given with thunder.

९.१३.४१

तस्मिंस्तु निहते वीरे द्रोणपुत्रः प्रतापवान् ।
आरुरोह रथं तूर्णं तमेव रथिनां वरः ॥

M N Dutt After the fall of that hero, the valiant son of Drona, that foremost of car-warriors, speedily got upon the car of his slain enemy.

९.१३.४२

ततः सज्जो महाराज द्रौणिराहवदुर्मदः ।
अर्जुनं योधयामास संशप्तकवृतो रणे ॥

M N Dutt Then, O king, that warrior, invincible in batile, the son of Drona, well equipt with armour and weapons and helped by the Samsaptakas, fought with Arjuna.

९.१३.४३

तत्र युद्धं महच्चासीदर्जुनस्य परैः सह ।
मध्यंदिनगते सूर्ये यमराष्ट्रविवर्धनम् ॥

M N Dutt At noon, that battle between one and the many, increasing the denizens of Yama's abode, became exceedingly fierce.

९.१३.४४

तत्राश्चर्यमपश्याम दृष्ट्वा तेषां पराक्रमम् ।
यदेको युगपद्वीरान्समयोधयदर्जुनः ॥

M N Dutt The sight was wonderful. Arjuna, alone and unsupported, fought with all his foes simultaneously.

९.१३.४५

विमर्दस्तु महानासीदर्जुनस्य परैः सह ।
शतक्रतोर्यथा पूर्वं महत्या दैत्यसेनया ॥

M N Dutt The encounter was highly terrific that took place between Arjuna and his enemies, resembling that between Indra, in days of yore and the vast army of the Asuras.
