वैशंपायन उवाच ।
४.५८.१
अथ दुर्योधनः कर्णो दुःशासनविविंशती ।
द्रोणश्च सह पुत्रेण कृपश्चातिरथो रणे ॥
द्रोणश्च सह पुत्रेण कृपश्चातिरथो रणे ॥

Vaishampayana said Then Duryodhana, Karna, Dushasana, Vivinshati, the mighty car-warrior Kripa, Drona, with his son, holding out their strong and powerful bows, rushed with anger towards Dhananjaya with a view to kill him.
४.५८.२
पुनरीयुः सुसंरब्धा धनंजयजिघांसया ।
विस्फारयन्तश्चापानि बलवन्ति दृढानि च ॥

Then covering Dhananjaya with highly powerful weapons, Kripa, Karna, Drona, the foremost of car-warriors, showered a downpour of shafts, like clouds, on him, and struck him.

शरौघान्सम्यगस्यन्तो जीमूता इव वार्षिकाः ।
ववर्षुः शरवर्षाणि प्रपतन्तं किरीटिनम् ॥

Then covering Dhananjaya with highly powerful weapons, Kripa, Karna, Drona, the foremost of car-warriors, showered a downpour of shafts, like clouds, on him, and struck him.

अदूरात्पर्यवस्थाय पूरयामासुरादृताः ॥

Waiting at a distance they speedily covered him in battle with numberless arrows crowned with feathers.

He being thus covered with celestials weapons, not even a space measuring two fingers was seen on him.
४.५८.८
ततः प्रहस्य बीभत्सुर्दिव्यमैन्द्रं महारथः ।
अस्त्रमादित्यसंकाशं गाण्डीवे समयोजयत् ॥
अस्त्रमादित्यसंकाशं गाण्डीवे समयोजयत् ॥

Then smiling, the mighty car-warrior Bibhatsu set the Aindra weapon, effulgent like the sun, on his Gandiva bow.
४.५८.९
स रश्मिभिरिवादित्यः प्रतपन्समरे बली ।
किरीटमाली कौन्तेयः सर्वान्प्राच्छादयत्कुरून् ॥

Like the sun covering (the earth) with rays, the powerful son of Kunti, decked with a diadem, remained in the battle-field covering all with arrows.
४.५८.१०
यथा बलाहके विद्युत्पावको वा शिलोच्चये ।
तथा गाण्डीवमभवदिन्द्रायुधमिवाततम् ॥
तथा गाण्डीवमभवदिन्द्रायुधमिवाततम् ॥

As lightning in the clouds, as fire in the rock, so the Gandiva shone like the rain-bow.
४.५८.१२
त्रस्ताश्च रथिनः सर्वे बभूवुस्तत्र सर्वशः ।
सर्वे शान्तिपरा भूत्वा स्वचित्तानि न लेभिरे ।
संग्रामविमुखाः सर्वे योधास्ते हतचेतसः ॥
सर्वे शान्तिपरा भूत्वा स्वचित्तानि न लेभिरे ।
संग्रामविमुखाः सर्वे योधास्ते हतचेतसः ॥

They all were stunned (inert and dumb) with no conscious at all. All soldiers discouraged to carry on fight and showed their back to the battle-field.
४.५८.१३
एवं सर्वाणि सैन्यानि भग्नानि भरतर्षभ ।
प्राद्रवन्त दिशः सर्वा निराशानि स्वजीविते ॥
प्राद्रवन्त दिशः सर्वा निराशानि स्वजीविते ॥
M N Dutt
O the best in Bharata dynasty, ) Janamejaya! thus the war-craft/strategy of the whole army shattered. The soldiers began departing under sheer despair wherever they found the way to escape and defend their life.
