महाभारतम् — ३.२८६

कर्ण उवाच ।

भगवन्तमहं भक्तो यथा मां वेत्थ गोपते ।
तथा परमतिग्मांशो नान्यं देवं कथंचन ॥

M N Dutt Karna said: O god, O lord of splendour and scorching rays, you are as much aware of my being a worshipper of yours, (as of the fact) that there is nothing which I can not part with.

३.२८६.२

न मे दारा न मे पुत्रा न चात्मा सुहृदो न च ।
तथेष्टा वै सदा भक्त्या यथा त्वं गोपते मम ॥

M N Dutt By virtue of the reverence that I always feel for you, you are. O lord of splendour, dearer (to me) then my wife, my sons, my own self and my friends.

३.२८६.३

इष्टानां च महात्मानो भक्तानां च न संशयः ।
कुर्वन्ति भक्तिमिष्टां च जानीषे त्वं च भास्कर ॥

M N Dutt O author of light, you are no doubt aware that high-souled persons cherish a high regard for their devoted worshipper.

३.२८६.४

इष्टो भक्तश्च मे कर्णो न चान्यद्दैवतं दिवि ।
जानीत इति वै कृत्वा भगवानाह मद्धितम् ॥

M N Dutt Considering that Karna is your devoted worshipper and that he known no other god in heavens, you have given me these instructions.

३.२८६.५

भूयश्च शिरसा याचे प्रसाद्य च पुनः पुनः ।
इति ब्रवीमि तिग्मांशो त्वं तु मे क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥

M N Dutt Again with bended head and repeated prayers do I implore you and tell you this. O lord of searching rays, that you will (graciously) pardon me.

३.२८६.६

बिभेमि न तथा मृत्योर्यथा बिभ्येऽनृतादहम् ।
विशेषेण द्विजातीनां सर्वेषां सर्वदा सताम् ।
प्रदाने जीवितस्यापि न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा ॥

M N Dutt I do not fear death so much as falsehood. Especially for the sake of all the righteous twice-born ones ever, I am ready to sacrifice my life without (the least) hesitation.

३.२८६.७

यच्च मामात्थ देव त्वं पाण्डवं फल्गुनं प्रति ।
व्येतु संतापजं दुःखं तव भास्कर मानसम् ।
अर्जुनं प्रति मां चैव विजेष्यामि रणेऽर्जुनम् ॥

M N Dutt As to what you have said to me about the Pandava Falguna. O author light, (I ask you) to dispel your caused by mental uneasiness regarding Arjuna and myself. (Because) I will surely defeat Arjuna in battle.

३.२८६.८

तवापि विदितं देव ममाप्यस्त्रबलं महत् ।
जामदग्न्यादुपात्तं यत्तथा द्रोणान्महात्मनः ॥

M N Dutt O god, you are no doubt aware of the great strength of my weapons which I have obtained from the son of Jamadagni (i.e. Parashuram) and from the high-souled Drona.

३.२८६.९

इदं त्वमनुजानीहि सुरश्रेष्ठ व्रतं मम ।
भिक्षते वज्रिणे दद्यामपि जीवितमात्मनः ॥

M N Dutt O best of the gods, permit me now to observe the vow on my part that I may bestow my very life upon the begging wielder of the thunderbolt.

सूर्य उवाच ।

३.२८६.१०

यदि तात ददास्येते वज्रिणे कुण्डले शुभे ।
त्वमप्येनमथो ब्रूया विजयार्थं महाबल ॥

M N Dutt Surya said: O highly-powerful son, if you bestow your beautiful car-rings to the wielder of the sorrow thunderbolt, you should, in order to secure victory, say to him, “O lord of hundred sacrifices, I can only part with my ear-rings under a condition."

३.२८६.११

नियमेन प्रदद्यास्त्वं कुण्डले वै शतक्रतोः ।
अवध्यो ह्यसि भूतानां कुण्डलाभ्यां समन्वितः ॥

३.२८६.१२

अर्जुनेन विनाशं हि तव दानवसूदनः ।
प्रार्थयानो रणे वत्स कुण्डले ते जिहीर्षति ॥

M N Dutt As you cannot surely be slain by any creature when furnished with your earrings, so the destroyer of the Danavas, O son, wishing your death at the hands of Arjuna in battle, wants to rob you of your ear-rings.

३.२८६.१३

स त्वमप्येनमाराध्य सूनृताभिः पुनः पुनः ।
अभ्यर्थयेथा देवेशममोघार्थं पुरंदरम् ॥

M N Dutt Worshipping again and again with agreeable and truthful speeches the lord of the celestials, Purandara, the possessor of infallible weapons.

३.२८६.१४

अमोघां देहि मे शक्तिममित्रविनिबर्हिणीम् ।
दास्यामि ते सहस्राक्ष कुण्डले वर्म चोत्तमम् ॥

M N Dutt You will say to him, “O thousand-eyed lord, I will give you the two ear-rings and the excellent armour, if you will bestow on me an infallible dart destructive of enemies."

३.२८६.१५

इत्येवं नियमेन त्वं दद्याः शक्राय कुण्डले ।
तया त्वं कर्ण संग्रामे हनिष्यसि रणे रिपून् ॥

M N Dutt It is under this condition only, O Karna, that you will give your ear-rings to Shakra. Then you will be able to destroy your enemies in battle.

३.२८६.१६

नाहत्वा हि महाबाहो शत्रूनेति करं पुनः ।
सा शक्तिर्देवराजस्य शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥

M N Dutt O mighty-armed one, that arrow of the lord of the gods does not return to the hand of the person who discharges it, without destroying hundreds and thousands of enemies.

वैशंपायन उवाच ।

३.२८६.१७

एवमुक्त्वा सहस्रांशुः सहसान्तरधीयत ।
ततः सूर्याय जप्यान्ते कर्णः स्वप्नं न्यवेदयत् ॥

M N Dutt Vaishampayana said : Saying this, the lord of thousand rays suddenly became invisible. (The next day) Karna after having performed his devotions told the sun of the dreara.

३.२८६.१८

यथादृष्टं यथातत्त्वं यथोक्तमुभयोर्निशि ।
तत्सर्वमानुपूर्व्येण शशंसास्मै वृषस्तदा ॥

M N Dutt And Vrisha (Karna) faithfully related to him everything in detail, viz. his meeting with the sun and the conversation that took place between them during the nighi.

३.२८६.१९

तच्छ्रुत्वा भगवान्देवो भानुः स्वर्भानुसूदनः ।
उवाच तं तथेत्येव कर्णं सूर्यः स्मयन्निव ॥

M N Dutt Hearing all this, the divine lord Bhanu, the subduer of Svarbhanu (Rahu) spoke to Karna with a smile, "it is all true.”

३.२८६.२०

ततस्तत्त्वमिति ज्ञात्वा राधेयः परवीरहा ।
शक्तिमेवाभिकाङ्क्षन्वै वासवं प्रत्यपालयत् ॥

M N Dutt Then the son of Radha, the slayer of enemies, knowing all this to be true, awaited (the arrival of) Vasava, with the desire of obtaining the dart.
