सूत उवाच ।
१.४०.२
तं तु नादं ततः श्रुत्वा मन्त्रिणस्ते प्रदुद्रुवुः ।
अपश्यंश्चैव ते यान्तमाकाशे नागमद्भुतम् ॥
M N Dutt Hearing the roars of Takshaka the ministers all fled. And as they were running away, they saw the king of the snakes the wonderful serpent Takshaka, going away through the sky like a streak with the colour of the lotus. His coursing through the sky looked like the vermillion line in the middle of the dark masses of a lady's hair.

तक्षकं पन्नगश्रेष्ठं भृशं शोकपरायणाः ॥

M N Dutt The king of Kashi, after due enquiries bestowed with ordained rights his daughter Vapushtama on the mighty hero of the Kuru race. And he too was exceedingly happy to get her. He did not give his heart to any other women at any time.

वपुष्टमा चापि वरं पतिं तदा
प्रतीतरूपं समवाप्य भूमिपम् ।
भावेन रामा रमयां बभूव वै
विहारकालेष्ववरोधसुन्दरी ॥
M N Dutt When he thus passed his days in pursuit of pleasure, ever-renowned for her beauty, devoted to her husband, the fairest of the fair, Vapushtama, having gained a desirable husband, pleased him with the excess of her love.
