भट्टिकाव्यम् (रावणवधः) — चतुर्दशः सर्गः | bhaṭṭikāvyam (rāvaṇavadhaḥ)

ततो दशाऽऽस्यः स्मरविह्वलाऽऽत्मा
चारप्रकाशीकृतशत्रुशक्तिः ।
विमोह्य मायामयराममूर्ध्ना
सीतामनीकं प्रजिघाय योद्धुम् ॥

Karandikar Thereafter, Ravana whose mind was affilicted by Cupid (passion) (and) to whom the might of the enemy was revealed by the spies, dispatched the army for fighting, after having beguiled Sita by means of Rama's head made by magic.

१४.२

कम्बूनथ समादध्मुः कोणैर्भेर्यो निजघ्निरे ।
वेणून्पुपूरिरे गुञ्जा जुगुञ्जुः करघट्टिताः ॥

Karandikar Then (they) blew the conchs, beat the drums with drum-sticks and puffed the flutes, and the drums, that were struck with the hands, sounded.

१४.३

वादयांचक्रिरे ढक्काः पणवा दध्वनुर्हताः ।
काहलाः पूरयांचक्रुः पूर्णाः पेरश्च सस्वनुः ॥

Karandikar The tabours began to sound, the beaten drum resounded; they blew the kahalas, and the air-filled peras produced notes.

१४.४

मृदङ्गा धीरमास्वेनुर्हतैर्स्वेने च गोमुखैः ।
घण्टाः शिशिञ्जिरे दीर्घं जह्रादे पटहैर्भृशम् ॥

Karandikar The murdagas produced deep notes and music was produced by the gomukhas ; the bells tolled for long, and excessive noise was produced by the pataha drums.

१४.५

हया जिहेषिरे हर्षाद्गम्भीरं जगजुर्गजाः ।
संत्रस्ताः करभा रेटुश्चुकुवुः पत्तिपङ्क्तयः ॥

Karandikar The horses neighed through joy, the elephants trumpeted deeply, the frightened baby elephants cried aloud and rows of foot-soldiers hummed.

१४.६

तुरङ्गापुस्फुटुर्भीताः पुस्फुरुर्वृषभाः परम् ।
नार्यश्चुक्षुभिरे मम्लुर्मुमुहुः शुशुचुः पतीन् ॥

Karandikar The frightened horses ran helter-skelter; bulls became extremely restless , women got agitated, became wearied and unconscious and lamented for their husbands.

१४.७

जगर्जुर्जहृषुः शुरा रेजुस्तुष्टुविरे परैः ।
बबन्धुरङ्गुलित्राणि सन्नेहुः परिनिर्ययुः ॥

Karandikar The brave shouted, rejoiced, blazed, were praised by others, fastened finger-thimbles, put on armour, marched out

१४.८

धनूष्यारोपयांचक्रुरारुरुहू रथाऽऽदिषु ।
असीनुद्ववृहुर्दीप्तान्गुर्वीरुच्चिक्षिपुर्गदाः ॥

Karandikar -strung (their) bows, ascended (their) chariots, flourished (their) swords and hurled aloft (their) maces.

१४.९

शूलानि भ्रमयांचक्रुर्बाणानाददिरे शुभान् ।
भ्रेमुश्चुकुर्दिरे रेसुर्ववल्गुश्च पदातयः ॥

Karandikar The foot-soldiers whirled (their) spikes, picked up radiant arrows, moved about, jumped, shouted and ran fast.

१४.१०

अमुत्पेतुः कशाघातै रश्म्याकर्षैर्ममङ्गिरे ।
अश्वाः प्रदुद्रुवुर्मोक्षे रक्तं निजगरुः श्रमे ॥

Karandikar The horses leapt up on account of whip-lashes, looked attractive at the pulling of the reins, ran fast on being unleashed and drank (licked) (their own) blood on exhaustion.

१४.११

गजानां प्रददुः शारीन्कम्बलान्परितस्तरुः ।
तेनुः कक्षां ध्वजांश्चैव समुच्छिश्रियुरुच्छिखान् ॥

Karandikar (They) loaded elephants with arms, spread over blankets, fastened belly-straps and hoisted banners with their flaps rising up.

१४.१२

विशिश्वासयिषांचक्रुरालिलिङ्गुश्च योषितः ।
आजघ्नुर्मूर्ध्नि बालांश्च चुचुम्बुश्च सुतप्रियाः ॥

Karandikar (They) wished to create confidence in and embraced the young wives; and, fond of their sons, (they) smelt the children on their head and kissed them.

१४.१३

गम्भीरवेदिनः संज्ञा गजा जगृहुरक्षताः ।
ववृधे शुशुभे चैषां मदो हृष्टैश्च पुप्लुवे ॥

Karandikar The elephants which could feel injuries, accepted the suggestions given without being hurt; and their ichor increased and glittered and, overjoyed, (they) jumped.

१४.१४

मृगाः प्रदक्षिणं सस्रुः शिवाः सम्यग्ववाशिरे ।
अवामैः पुस्फुरे देहैः प्रसेदे चित्तवृत्तिभिः ॥

Karandikar The deer paraded rightward; jackals howled auspiciously; (their ) bodies throbbed and their mental dispositions were pleased.

१४.१५

प्राज्यमाञ्जिहिषांचक्रे प्रहस्तो रावणाऽऽज्ञया ।
द्वारं ररङ्घतुर्याम्य्ं महापार्श्वमहोदरौ ॥

Karandikar By the command of Ravana, Prahasta desired to march to the eastern gate. Mahaparsva and Mahodara appro ached the southern gate.

१४.१६

प्रययाविन्द्र-जित्प्रत्यगियाय स्वयमुत्तरम् ।
सहध्यासिसिषांचक्रे विरूपाऽक्षः पुरोदरम् ॥

Karandikar Indrajit went to the western gate. (Ravana) himself proceeded to the northern gate. Virupaksa wished to remain at the centre of the city.

१४.१७

शुश्राव रामस्तत्सर्वं प्रतस्थे च ससैनिकः ।
विस्फारयांचकाराऽस्त्रं बबन्धाऽथ च बाणधी ॥

Karandikar Rama heard all that and started, accompanied by (his) soldiers ; then (he) stretched his bow and fastened two quivers.

१४.१८

ईक्षांचक्रेऽथ सौमित्रिमनुजज्ञे बलानि च ।
नमश्चकार देवेभ्यः पर्णतल्पं मुमोच च ॥

Karandikar Now, Rama looked at Laksmana and ordered about (his) troops ; (he) saluted the gods and abandoned the leaf-bed.

१४.१९

चकासांचक्रुरुत्तस्थुर्नेदुरानशिरे दिशः ।
वानरा भूधरान्रेधुर्बभञ्जुश्च ततस्तरून् ॥

Karandikar Then the monkeys shone forth, got up, muttered, pervaded the quarters, dug out boulders and broke down trees.

१४.२०

ददाल भूर्नभो रक्तं गोष्पदप्रं ववर्ष च ।
मृगाः प्रससृपुर्वामं खगाश्चुकुविरेऽशुभम् ॥

Karandikar The earth cracked up and a cows foot-printful of blood rained; deer proceeded leftwards and birds hooted inauspiciously.

१४.२१

उल्का ददृशिरे दीप्ता रुरुवुश्चाऽशिवं शिवाः ।
चक्ष्माये च मही रामः शशङ्के चाऽशुभाऽगमम् ॥

Karandikar Blazing meteors were sighted and jackals howled ominously ; the earth quaked and Rama suspected the advent of evil.

१४.२२

रावणः शुश्रुवान्शत्रून्राक्षसानभ्युपेयुषः ।
स्वयं युयुत्सयांचक्रे प्राकाराऽग्रे निषेदिवान् ॥

Karandikar Seated on the front of the rampart, Ravana who had heard that the enemies were desirous of attacking the demons, personally inspired them for fighting.

१४.२३

निरासू राक्षसा बाणान्प्रजहुः शूलपट्टिशान् ।
असींश्च वाहयांचक्रुः पाशैश्चाऽऽचकृषुस्ततैः ॥

Karandikar The demons discharged arrows, hurled spears and axes, used swords and pulled broad nooses.

१४.२४

भल्लैश्च बिभिदुस्तीक्ष्णैर्विविधुस्तोमरैस्तथा ।
गदाभिश्चूर्णयांचक्रुः शितैश्चक्रैश्च चिच्छिदुः ॥

Karandikar And, they pierced with sharp crescent-shaped lances and similarly injured with javelins, crushed with maces and tore off with cutting discs.

१४.२५

वानरा मुष्टिभिर्जघ्नुर्ददंशुर्दशनैस्तथा ।
निरासुश्च गिरींस्तुङ्गान्द्रुमान्विचकरुस्तथा ॥

Karandikar The monkeys beat with fists and also bit with teeth, hurled lofty boulders and similarly dispersed trees ;

१४.२६

लाङ्गूलैर्लोठयांचक्रुस्तलैर्निन्युश्च संक्षयम् ।
नखैश्चकृततुः क्रुद्धाः पिपिषुश्च क्षितौ बलात् ॥

Karandikar Enraged, they killed with tails, led to destruction with palms, tore up with nails and pulverised on the earth with force.

१४.२७

संबभूवुः कबन्धानि प्रोहुः शोणिततोयगाः ।
तेरुर्भटाऽऽस्यपद्मानि ध्वजैः फेणैरिवाऽऽबभे ॥

Karandikar There arose headless trunks; rivers of blood flowed ; the lotus-like faces of warriors floated and the flags appeared like foam.

१४.२८

रक्तपङ्के गजाः सेदुर्न प्रचक्रमिरे रथाः ।
निममज्जुस्तुरङ्गाश्च गन्तुं नोत्सेहिरे भटाः ॥

Karandikar Elephants got stuck up in mud (created by) blood, chariots could not proceed, horses sank deep and warriors dared not go ahead.

१४.२९

कोट्या कोट्या पुरद्वारमेकैकं रुरुघे द्विषाम् ।
षट्त्रिंशद्धरिकोट्यश्च निवव्रुर्वानराऽऽधिपम् ॥

Karandikar Each and every gate of the city was blocked by a crore each of the enemies ; and thirty-six crores encircled the lord of the monkeys.

१४.३०

तस्तनुर्जह्वलुर्मम्लुर्जग्लुर्लुलुठिरे क्षताः ।
मुमूर्च्छुर्ववमू रक्तं ततृषुश्चोभये भटाः ॥

Karandikar Injured warriors of both sides groaned, tossed about, felt weary, desponded, rolled (on the ground), fainted, vomitted blood and got thirsty.

१४.३१

सम्पातिना प्रजङ्घस्तु युयुधेऽसौ द्रुमाहतः ।
चकम्पे तीव चुक्रोश जीवनाशं ननाश च ॥

Karandikar Prajaigha, however, fought Sampati; hit with a tree, he was shaken, cried excessively and so perished as to lose his life.

१४.३२

उच्चख्नाते नलेनाऽऽजौ स्फुरत्प्रतपनाऽक्षिणी ।
जम्बुमाली जहौ प्राणान्ग्राव्णा मारुतिना हतः ॥

Karandikar By Nala were dug out both the sparkling eyes of Pratapana ; hit with a boulder by Maruti, Jambumali laid down his (life-)breaths.

१४.३३

मित्रिघ्नस्य प्रचुक्षोद गदयाऽङ्गं विभीषणः ।
सुग्रीवः प्रघसं नेभे बहून्रामस्ततर्द च ॥

Karandikar Of Mitraghna, Vibhisana pounded the body with a mace; Sugriva killed Praghasa and Rama killed very many.

१४.३४

वज्रमुष्टेर्विशिश्लेष मैन्देनाऽभिहतं शिरः ।
नीलश्चकर्त चक्रेण निकुम्भस्य शिरः स्फुरत् ॥

Karandikar Vajramusti's head, battered by Mainda, got severed. Nila, sawed off with a dise the throbbing head of Nikumbha.

१४.३५

विरूपाक्षो जहे प्राणैस्तृढः सौमित्रिपत्रिभिः ।
प्रमोचयांचकाराऽसून्द्विविदस्त्वशनिप्रभम् ॥

Karandikar Pierced by Laksmana's arrows, Virupaksa was aban- doned by (his) life-breaths. Dvivida caused life-breaths to be given up by Asaniprabha.

१४.३६

गदा शत्रुजिता जिघ्ये तां प्रतीयेष वालिजः ।
रथं ममन्थ सहयं शाखिनाऽस्य ततोऽङ्गदः ॥

Karandikar A mace was hurled by Indrajit ; the son of vali caught it. Thereafter Aigada, with a tree, battered his (Indrajits) chariot along with the horses.

१४.३७

तत्कर्म वालिपुत्रस्य दृष्ट्वा विश्वं विसिष्मिये ।
संत्रेसू राक्षसाः सर्वे बहु मेने च राघवः ॥

Karandikar Having seen that deed of the son of Vali, the universe was wonderstruck, all the demons took fright and Raghava (Rama) held it in great esteem.

१४.३८

सुग्रीवो मुमुदे देवाः साध्वित्यूचुः सविस्मयाः ।
विभीषणोऽभितुष्टाव प्रशशंसुः प्लवङ्गमाः ॥

Karandikar Sugriva rejoiced, the gods, full of surprise, exclaimed, "Well done !' Vibhisana praised (him), and the monkeys applauded aloud.

१४.३९

ही चित्रं लक्ष्मणेनोदे रावणिश्च तिरोदधे ।
विचकार ततो रामः शरान्संतत्रसुर्द्विषः ॥

Karandikar ''Oh, wonder !' uttered by Laksmanpa and, Indrajit the son of Ravana, disappeared. Then Rama dispersed arrows ; the enemies took fright (felt distressed).

१४.४०

विभिन्ना जुघुरुर्घोरं जक्षुः क्रव्याऽशिनो हतान् ।
चुष्च्योत व्रणिनां रक्तं छिन्नाश्चेलुः क्षणं भुजाः ॥

Karandikar Injured, they screamed horridly ; carnivorous beasts devoured the slain ; the blood of the wounded trickled (down); severed arms throbbed for a moment.

१४.४१

कृत्तैरपि दृढक्रोधो वीरवक्त्रैर्न तत्यजे ।
पलायांचक्रिरे शेषा जिह्रियुः शूरमानिनः ॥

Karandikar The deep-rooted anger was not abandoned by the warriors' faces, though severed; the rest ran away; those who regarded themselves brave felt ashamed.

१४.४२

राघवो न दयांचक्रे दधुर्धैर्यं न केचन ।
मम्रे पतङ्गवद्वीरैर्हाहेति च विचुक्रुशे ॥

Karandikar Raghava took no pity; none took courage ; Warriors died like moths and screamed , Ah, Alas !'

१४.४३

तिरोबभूवे सूर्येण प्रापे च निशयाऽऽस्पदम् ।
जग्रसे कालरात्रीव वानरान्राक्षसाम्श्च सा ॥

Karandikar The sun disappeared and (immediately) a foot-hold was acquired by the night ; and, like a night of death, she swallowed the monkeys and the demons.

१४.४४

चुकोपेन्द्रजिदत्युग्रं सर्पाऽस्त्रं चाऽऽजुहाव सः ।
आजुहुवे तिरोभूतः परानीकं जहास च ॥

Karandikar Indrajit got angry and summoned the extremely terrific serpent missile; he who had become invisible, challenged the enemy's army and jeered.

१४.४५

बबाधे च बलं कृत्स्नं निजग्राह च सायकैः ।
उत्ससर्ज शरांस्तेऽस्य सर्पसाच्च प्रपेदिरे ॥

Karandikar He overpowered the whole amry and immediately bound it down with arrows; he discharged arrows and they turned into serpents against (Rama's army).

१४.४६

आचिचाय स तैः सेनामाचिकाय च राघवौ ।
बभाण च न मे मायां जिगायेन्द्रोऽपि किं नृभिः ॥

Karandikar He enveloped the army and covered the two Raghu princes with them, and exclaimed. Even Indra could not subdue my jugglery. What with men ?''

१४.४७

आचिक्याते च भूयोऽपि राघवौ तेन पन्नगैः ।
तौ मुमुहतुरुद्विग्नौ वसुधायां च पेततुः ॥

Karandikar Once again were the Raghu princes covered by him with serpents. Distressed, the two fainted and fell down on the ground.

१४.४८

ततो रामेति चक्रन्दुस्त्रेसुः परिदिदेविरे ।
निशश्वसुश्च सेनान्यः प्रोचुर्धिगिति चाऽऽत्मनः ॥

Karandikar Then the commanders of the army yelled, “Alas, Oh Rama, "took fright, lamented, sighed and exclaimed "Fie upon ourselves !'

१४.४९

मन्युं शेकुर्न ते रोद्धुं नाऽस्रं संरुरुधुः पतत् ।
विविदुर्नेन्द्रजिन्मार्गं परीयुश्च प्लवङ्गमाः ॥

Karandikar They could not restrain (their) grief, did not check the falling tears, could not know the way to Indrajit and went around.

१४.५०

दधावाऽद्भिस्ततश्चक्षुः सुग्रीवस्य विभीषणः ।
विदांचकार धौताऽक्षः स रिपुं खे ननर्द च ॥

Karandikar Then Vibhisana washed the eye of Sugriva with water ; he whose eye was washed apprehended the enemy in the sky and shouted .
