महाभारतम् — ८.४५

संजय उवाच ।

द्रौणिस्तु रथवंशेन महता परिवारितः ।
आपतत्सहसा राजन्यत्र राजा व्यवस्थितः ॥

M N Dutt Sanjaya said Thereupon surrounded be a mighty carforce Drona's son appeared, all on a sudden O king, where Pritha's son was.

८.४५.२

तमापतन्तं सहसा शूरः शौरिसहायवान् ।
दधार सहसा पार्थो वेलेव मकरालयम् ॥

M N Dutt Like a bank containing ocean Pritha's heroic son, assisted by Shouri, all on a sudden, encountered him.

८.४५.३

ततः क्रुद्धो महाराज द्रोणपुत्रः प्रतापवान् ।
अर्जुनं वासुदेवं च छादयामास पत्रिभिः ॥

M N Dutt Thereupon, O king, your son, the great carwarrior, being greatly enraged resisted those the rays twin sons of Pandu, the great bowmen, with numberless arrows.

८.४५.४

अवच्छन्नौ ततः कृष्णौ दृष्ट्वा तत्र महारथाः ।
विस्मयं परमं गत्वा प्रैक्षन्त कुरवस्तदा ॥

M N Dutt Beholding those two Krishnas covered with arrows the mighty car-warriors of the Pandava and Kuru armies, filled with great wonder, looked at them.

८.४५.५

अर्जुनस्तु ततो दिव्यमस्त्रं चक्रे हसन्निव ।
तदस्त्रं ब्राह्मणो युद्धे वारयामास भारत ॥

M N Dutt Thereupon as if smiling Arjuna created a celestial weapon while, ( descendant of Bharata, the Brahmana baffled in battle.

८.४५.६

यद्यद्धि व्याक्षिपद्युद्धे पाण्डवोऽस्त्रं जिघांसया ।
तत्तदस्त्रं महेष्वासो द्रोणपुत्रो व्यशातयत् ॥

M N Dutt Whatever weapon that the Pandava discharged in battle for killing the son of Drona, the great bowman made useless.

८.४५.७

अस्त्रयुद्धे ततो राजन्वर्तमाने भयावहे ।
अपश्याम रणे द्रौणिं व्यात्ताननमिवान्तकम् ॥

M N Dutt Then, O king, a great encounter of weapons took place in that great battle when we saw the son of Drona like Death himself with widening mouth.

८.४५.८

स दिशो विदिशश्चैव छादयित्वा विजिह्मगैः ।
वासुदेवं त्रिभिर्बाणैरविध्यद्दक्षिणे भुजे ॥

M N Dutt Having filled all the quarters and directions with straight arrow he sundered Krishna's right arm with three arrows.

८.४५.९

ततोऽर्जुनो हयान्हत्वा सर्वांस्तस्य महात्मनः ।
चकार समरे भूमिं शोणितौघतरङ्गिणीम् ॥

M N Dutt Thereupon killing all the horses of the highsouled one Arjuna created, in the battle-field, a dreadful stream of blood, carrying away all to the other region.

८.४५.१०

निहता रथिनः पेतुः पार्थचापच्युतैः शरैः ।
हयाश्च पर्यधावन्त मुक्तयोक्त्रास्ततस्ततः ॥

८.४५.११

तद्दृष्ट्वा कर्म पार्थस्य द्रौणिराहवशोभिनः ।
अवाकिरद्रणे कृष्णं समन्तान्निशितैः शरैः ॥

८.४५.१२

ततोऽर्जुनं महाराज द्रौणिरायम्य पत्रिणा ।
वक्षोदेशे समासाद्य ताडयामास संयुगे ॥

M N Dutt O monarch, Drouni again ruthlessly wounded Arjuna on the breast with a winged arrow.

८.४५.१३

सोऽतिविद्धो रणे तेन द्रोणपुत्रेण भारत ।
आदत्त परिघं घोरं द्रौणेश्चैनमवाक्षिपत् ॥

८.४५.१४

तमापतन्तं परिघं कार्तस्वरविभूषितम् ।
द्रौणिश्चिच्छेद सहसा तत उच्चुक्रुशुर्जनाः ॥

८.४५.१५

सोऽनेकधापतद्भूमौ भारद्वाजस्य सायकैः ।
विशीर्णः पर्वतो राजन्यथा स्यान्मातरिश्वना ॥

८.४५.१६

ततोऽर्जुनो रणे द्रौणिं विव्याध दशभिः शरैः ।
सारथिं चास्य भल्लेन रथनीडादपाहरत् ॥

८.४५.१७

स संगृह्य स्वयं वाहान्कृष्णौ प्राच्छादयच्छरैः ।
तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम द्रौणेराशु पराक्रमम् ॥

M N Dutt Then himself taking up the reins of horses Drona's son covered Krishna and Arjuna with arrows. He saw a wonderful power in him then. He simultaneously drove his horses and fought with Phalguna. It was spoken highly of by all the warriors in battle, O king.

८.४५.१८

अयच्छत्तुरगान्यच्च फल्गुनं चाप्ययोधयत् ।
तदस्य समरे राजन्सर्वे योधा अपूजयन् ॥

८.४५.१९

यदा त्वग्रस्यत रणे द्रोणपुत्रेण फल्गुनः ।
ततो रश्मीन्रथाश्वानां क्षुरप्रैश्चिच्छिदे जयः ॥

M N Dutt Then smiling a little, Vibhatsu also named Jaya speedily cut-off the rein of Drouni's horses in battle with a razor-like shaft.

८.४५.२०

प्राद्रवंस्तुरगास्ते तु शरवेगप्रबाधिताः ।
ततोऽभून्निनदो भूयस्तव सैन्यस्य भारत ॥

M N Dutt Assailed with weapons the horses ran away on all sides. There then took place a great havoc of your soldiers.

८.४५.२१

पाण्डवास्तु जयं लब्ध्वा तव सैन्यमुपाद्रवन् ।
समन्तान्निशितान्बाणान्विमुञ्चन्तो जयैषिणः ॥

M N Dutt Having thus accomplished victory the Pandavas, desirous of achieving (further) success, pursued your soldiers, on all sides, making a discharge of arrows.

८.४५.२२

पाण्डवैस्तु महाराज धार्तराष्ट्री महाचमूः ।
पुनः पुनरथो वीरैरभज्यत जयोद्धतैः ॥

M N Dutt Your great army was again and again routed by the Pandava warriors desirous of victory.

८.४५.२३

पश्यतां ते महाराज पुत्राणां चित्रयोधिनाम् ।
शकुनेः सौबलेयस्य कर्णस्य च महात्मनः ॥

M N Dutt Thereupon in the very presence of your sons, O king, conversant with diverse modes of war-fare, of Subala's son Shakuni and Karna.

८.४५.२४

वार्यमाणा महासेना पुत्रैस्तव जनेश्वर ।
नावतिष्ठत संग्रामे ताड्यमाना समन्ततः ॥

M N Dutt Although prevented, O king, by your sons that great army assailed on all sides did not stop in the battle-field.

८.४५.२५

ततो योधैर्महाराज पलायद्भिस्ततस्ततः ।
अभवद्व्याकुलं भीतैः पुत्राणां ते महद्बलम् ॥

M N Dutt The warriors taking to their heels on all sides in numbers a great confusion took place in the vast terror-stricken army of your son.

८.४५.२६

तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति सततं सूतपुत्रस्य जल्पतः ।
नावतिष्ठत सा सेना वध्यमाना महात्मभिः ॥

M N Dutt Karna then exclaimed-"Wait wait". But your army, slain by many great warriors, did not wait in the battle-field.

८.४५.२७

अथोत्क्रुष्टं महाराज पाण्डवैर्जितकाशिभिः ।
धार्तराष्ट्रबलं दृष्ट्वा द्रवमाणं समन्ततः ॥

M N Dutt Seeing Prishata's son released and Drona's son wounded, the Panchalas, O king, jubilant over the victory, sent up loud war-cries.

८.४५.२८

ततो दुर्योधनः कर्णमब्रवीत्प्रणयादिव ।
पश्य कर्ण यथा सेना पाण्डवैरर्दिता भृशम् ॥

८.४५.२९

त्वयि तिष्ठति संत्रासात्पलायति समन्ततः ।
एतज्ज्ञात्वा महाबाहो कुरु प्राप्तमरिंदम ॥

८.४५.३०

सहस्राणि च योधानां त्वामेव पुरुषर्षभ ।
क्रोशन्ति समरे वीर द्राव्यमाणानि पाण्डवैः ॥

M N Dutt Routed by the Pandavas, thousands of our soldiers are calling after you only.

८.४५.३१

एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु राधेयो दुर्योधनवचो महत् ।
मद्रराजमिदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्सूतनन्दनः ॥

M N Dutt Hearing those weighty words of Duryodhana, Karna, as if smiling, said to the Madra king.

८.४५.३२

पश्य मे भुजयोर्वीर्यमस्त्राणां च जनेश्वर ।
अद्य हन्मि रणे सर्वान्पाञ्चालान्पाण्डुभिः सह ।
वाहयाश्वान्नरव्याघ्र भद्रेणैव जनेश्वर ॥

M N Dutt Behold, O king, the strength of my arms and weapons. I will kill today in battle all the Panchalas and Pandavas. Drive my car, O best of men and every thing will be as I have said.”

८.४५.३३

एवमुक्त्वा महाराज सूतपुत्रः प्रतापवान् ।
प्रगृह्य विजयं वीरो धनुःश्रेष्ठं पुरातनम् ।
सज्यं कृत्वा महाराज संमृज्य च पुनः पुनः ॥

M N Dutt Having said this, O monarch, the charioteer's son, highly powerful as he was, took up his old victorious bow Vijaya the best of its kind and rubbing again and again its string set it on the bow. Thereupon having assured his army and commanded them to wait in the battle-field, the powerful and highly energetic Karna set Bhargava weapons to his bow-string.

८.४५.३४

संनिवार्य च योधान्स्वान्सत्येन शपथेन च ।
प्रायोजयदमेयात्मा भार्गवास्त्रं महाबलः ॥

८.४५.३५

ततो राजन्सहस्राणि प्रयुतान्यर्बुदानि च ।
कोटिशश्च शरास्तीक्ष्णा निरगच्छन्महामृधे ॥

M N Dutt There came out in a stream, O king, millions of sharp arrows in that mighty encounter.

८.४५.३६

ज्वलितैस्तैर्महाघोरैः कङ्कबर्हिणवाजितैः ।
संछन्ना पाण्डवी सेना न प्राज्ञायत किंचन ॥

M N Dutt Covered fully with those shining and dreadful Kanka and peacock-feathered arrows the Pandava soldiers could see nothing in the battle-field.

८.४५.३७

हाहाकारो महानासीत्पाञ्चालानां विशां पते ।
पीडितानां बलवता भार्गवास्त्रेण संयुगे ॥

M N Dutt Assailed by the powerful Bhargava weapon in that battle, O king, Panchalas set up loud lamentations.

८.४५.३८

निपतद्भिर्गजै राजन्नरैश्चापि सहस्रशः ।
रथैश्चापि नरव्याघ्र हयैश्चापि समन्ततः ॥

८.४५.३९

प्राकम्पत मही राजन्निहतैस्तैस्ततस्ततः ।
व्याकुलं सर्वमभवत्पाण्डवानां महद्बलम् ॥

M N Dutt And O king, thousands of elephants, horses, cars and men falling on all sides, the earth began to shake. The great army of the Pandavas quivered from one end to the other.

८.४५.४०

कर्णस्त्वेको युधां श्रेष्ठो विधूम इव पावकः ।
दहञ्शत्रून्नरव्याघ्र शुशुभे स परंतपः ॥

M N Dutt In the meantime while killing his enemies, that foremost of men the great warrior Karna, even destroying his foes, shone like smokeless fire.

८.४५.४१

ते वध्यमानाः कर्णेन पाञ्चालाश्चेदिभिः सह ।
तत्र तत्र व्यमुह्यन्त वनदाहे यथा द्विपाः ।
चुक्रुशुस्ते नरव्याघ्र यथाप्राग्वा नरोत्तमाः ॥

M N Dutt Massacred then by Karna, the Panchalas and Chedis lost their consciousness in the battle-field like elephants when a forest fire rages on.

८.४५.४२

तेषां तु क्रोशतां श्रुत्वा भीतानां रणमूर्धनि ।
धावतां च दिशो राजन्वित्रस्तानां समन्ततः ।
आर्तनादो महांस्तत्र प्रेतानामिव संप्लवे ॥

M N Dutt The leading warriors sent up war-cries roaring like tigers. Like animals at the hour of universal dissolution the soldiers, terrorstricken and running wildly about in the battlefield,set-up loud cries of lamentation.

८.४५.४३

वध्यमानांस्तु तान्दृष्ट्वा सूतपुत्रेण मारिष ।
वित्रेसुः सर्वभूतानि तिर्यग्योनिगतान्यपि ॥

M N Dutt Seeing them thus slaughtered by the charioteer's son, all creatures, beasts and birds, were terrorised.

८.४५.४४

ते वध्यमानाः समरे सूतपुत्रेण सृञ्जयाः ।
अर्जुनं वासुदेवं च व्याक्रोशन्त मुहुर्मुहुः ।
प्रेतराजपुरे यद्वत्प्रेतराजं विचेतसः ॥

M N Dutt As the spirits call upon the Regent of Death to save them, so the Srinjayas, massacred by Karna, repeatedly prayed to Arjuna and Vasudeva's son to save them.

८.४५.४५

अथाब्रवीद्वासुदेवं कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ।
भार्गवास्त्रं महाघोरं दृष्ट्वा तत्र सभीरितम् ॥

M N Dutt Beholding there the discharge of the dreadful Bhargava weapon and hearing the cries of his men slaughtered by Karna, with arrows Kunti's son Dhananjaya said to Krishna. can

८.४५.४६

पश्य कृष्ण महाबाहो भार्गवास्त्रस्य विक्रमम् ।
नैतदस्त्रं हि समरे शक्यं हन्तुं कथंचन ॥

M N Dutt Beholding there the discharge of the dreadful Bhargava weapon. No one withstand it in battle.

८.४५.४७

सूतपुत्रं च संरब्धं पश्य कृष्ण महारणे ।
अन्तकप्रतिमं वीरं कुर्वाणं कर्म दारुणम् ॥

M N Dutt Behold again in this great encounter O Krishna, the great son of a charioteer, resembling Death himself in power and performing a dreadful feat.

८.४५.४८

सुतीक्ष्णं चोदयन्नश्वान्प्रेक्षते मां मुहुर्मुहुः ।
न च पश्यामि समरे कर्णस्य प्रपलायितम् ॥

M N Dutt Repeatedly urging on his horses he is looking at me. I will not be able to tear me away from Karna in battle.

८.४५.४९

जीवन्प्राप्नोति पुरुषः संख्ये जयपराजयौ ।
जितस्य तु हृषीकेश वध एव कुतो जयः ॥

M N Dutt If a man survives he either meets with success or defeat in battle. To one dead, O Hrishikesh, death itself is a victory.
