M N Dutt Having pacified Yudhishthira, the king began to praise Uttara in the hearing of Arjuna. "O descendant of Kaikeya, in you I have truly got a son. Like you I never had nor shall have a son."

४.६४.१२

त्वया दायादवानस्मि कैकेयीनन्दिवर्धन ।
त्वया मे सदृशः पुत्रो न भूतो न भविष्यति ॥

M N Dutt Having pacified Yudhishthira, the king began to praise Uttara in the hearing of Arjuna. "O descendant of Kaikeya, in you I have truly got a son. Like you I never had nor shall have a son."

४.६४.१३

पदं पदसहस्रेण यश्चरन्नापराध्नुयात् ।
तेन कर्णेन ते तात कथमासीत्समागमः ॥

M N Dutt O son! How did you fight with that Karna who on his one target releases arrows for thousand targets unfailingly. And how did you meet in battle with who is unequal to any person in this world.

४.६४.१४

मनुष्यलोके सकले यस्य तुल्यो न विद्यते ।
यः समुद्र इवाक्षोभ्यः कालाग्निरिव दुःसहः ।
तेन भीष्मेण ते तात कथमासीत्समागमः ॥

M N Dutt O son! How did you fight with that Karna who on his one target releases arrows for thousand targets unfailingly. And how did you meet in battle with who is unequal to any person in this world.

४.६४.१५

आचार्यो वृष्णिवीराणां पाण्डवानां च यो द्विजः ।
सर्वक्षत्रस्य चाचार्यः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः ।
तेन द्रोणेन ते तात कथमासीत्समागमः ॥

M N Dutt O son! How did you fight with that twiceborn Drona, who is preceptor of the Vishni heroes and sons of Kurus, preceptor of all the Kshatriyas and the foremost among the armed soldiers.

४.६४.१६

आचार्यपुत्रो यः शूरः सर्वशस्त्रभृतामपि ।
अश्वत्थामेति विख्यातः कथं तेन समागमः ॥

M N Dutt How is the battle was that of Ashvatthama with you, the son of your preceptor who was the best among the warriors and armed heroes.

४.६४.१७

रणे यं प्रेक्ष्य सीदन्ति हृतस्वा वणिजो यथा ।
कृपेण तेन ते तात कथमासीत्समागमः ॥

M N Dutt As a Vaishya becomes much distressed on destruction of his wealth, the warriors seeing Kripa become f}accid. How did you fight with them.

४.६४.१८

पर्वतं योऽभिविध्येत राजपुत्रो महेषुभिः ।
दुर्योधनेन ते तात कथमासीत्समागमः ॥

M N Dutt O son, how was that your encounter with prince Duryodhana, who had broken the hills by his great arrows.

उत्तर उवाच ।

४.६४.१९

न मया निर्जिता गावो न मया निर्जिताः परे ।
कृतं तु कर्म तत्सर्वं देवपुत्रेण केनचित् ॥

M N Dutt Uttara said The kine have not been rescued by me nor have the enemy been defeated by me. All that has been done by the son of a celestials.

४.६४.२०

स हि भीतं द्रवन्तं मां देवपुत्रो न्यवारयत् ।
स चातिष्ठद्रथोपस्थे वज्रहस्तनिभो युवा ॥

M N Dutt Seeing me running away in fear, a youth of celestials birth, capable of wielding thunderbolt, stopped me, and got on my chariot.

४.६४.२१

तेन ता निर्जिता गावस्तेन ते कुरवो जिताः ।
तस्य तत्कर्म वीरस्य न मया तात तत्कृतम् ॥

M N Dutt By him the kine have been rescued and the Kauravas defeated. This is the work of that hero and not mine.

४.६४.२२

स हि शारद्वतं द्रोणं द्रोणपुत्रं च वीर्यवान् ।
सूतपुत्रं च भीष्मं च चकार विमुखाञ्शरैः ॥

M N Dutt It was he who repulse with arrows the six warriors namely Kripa, Drona, Ashvathama, Karna, Bhishma and Vikarana.

४.६४.२३

दुर्योधनं च समरे सनागमिव यूथपम् ।
प्रभग्नमब्रवीद्भीतं राजपुत्रं महाबलम् ॥

M N Dutt That highly powerful one said to the prince, Duryodhana, terrified and broken like a leader of elephant-herds.

४.६४.२४

न हास्तिनपुरे त्राणं तव पश्यामि किंचन ।
व्यायामेन परीप्सस्व जीवितं कौरवात्मज ॥

M N Dutt O Kuru prince, I do not see that by any means you are safe even at Hastinapur. Protect your life by displaying your energy.

४.६४.२५

न मोक्ष्यसे पलायंस्त्वं राजन्युद्धे मनः कुरु ।
पृथिवीं भोक्ष्यसे जित्वा हतो वा स्वर्गमाप्स्यसि ॥

M N Dutt You will not be free by escaping. Therefore make up your mind, O king, for fight. By conquering you will enjoy the earth, and by being slain you will attain to heaven.

४.६४.२६

स निवृत्तो नरव्याघ्रो मुञ्चन्वज्रनिभाञ्शरान् ।
सचिवैः संवृतो राजा रथे नाग इव श्वसन् ॥

M N Dutt Thus addressed, the king Duryodhana, the foremost of men, sighing on his car like a snake, turned, surrounded by his ministers, and discharging thunder-like arrows.

४.६४.२७

तत्र मे रोमहर्षोऽभूदूरुस्तम्भश्च मारिष ।
यदभ्रघनसंकाशमनीकं व्यधमच्छरैः ॥

M N Dutt Beholding it, my hairs stood erect and the thighs to treinble. But he struck with his arrows that army of lions.

४.६४.२८

तत्प्रणुद्य रथानीकं सिंहसंहननो युवा ।
कुरूंस्तान्प्रहसन्राजन्वासांस्यपहरद्बली ॥

M N Dutt Having assailed those mighty car-warriors the Kurus. O king, the youth, powerful as a lion, laughed and stripped them off their robes.

४.६४.२९

एकेन तेन वीरेण षड्रथाः परिवारिताः ।
शार्दूलेनेव मत्तेन मृगास्तृणचरा वने ॥

M N Dutt Those six great Kuru car-warriors were defeated by that hero alone, as animals, ranging in the forest, are killed by a single angry tiger."

विराट उवाच ।

४.६४.३०

क्व स वीरो महाबाहुर्देवपुत्रो महायशाः ।
यो मे धनमवाजैषीत्कुरुभिर्ग्रस्तमाहवे ॥

M N Dutt Virata said-Dear son! Tell me where that illustrious and chivalrous angel who has won my cows once taken in possession by Kauravas in battle? I want to see and honour that angel for his valour who have defended you including all cows.

४.६४.३१

इच्छामि तमहं द्रष्टुमर्चितुं च महाबलम् ।
येन मे त्वं च गावश्च रक्षिता देवसूनुना ॥

M N Dutt Virata said-Dear son! Tell me where that illustrious and chivalrous angel who has won my cows once taken in possession by Kauravas in battle? I want to see and honour that angel for his valour who have defended you including all cows.

उत्तर उवाच ।

४.६४.३२

अन्तर्धानं गतस्तात देवपुत्रः प्रतापवान् ।
स तु श्वो वा परश्वो वा मन्ये प्रादुर्भविष्यति ॥

M N Dutt Uttara replied-"Dear father! That mighty angel had vanished there but I am sure enough that he will again appear here either tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.

वैशंपायन उवाच ।

४.६४.३३

एवमाख्यायमानं तु छन्नं सत्रेण पाण्डवम् ।
वसन्तं तत्र नाज्ञासीद्विराटः पार्थमर्जुनम् ॥

M N Dutt Vaishampayana says-O Janamejaya! In spite of told impliedly, the king Virata could not recognise Arjuna, the son of Pandu living those hideously as an eunuch.

४.६४.३४

ततः पार्थोऽभ्यनुज्ञातो विराटेन महात्मना ।
प्रददौ तानि वासांसि विराटदुहितुः स्वयम् ॥

M N Dutt Arjuna, in disguise of Brihannala then gave all garments took-off from the bodies of great commanders (rathis) to Uttara, daughter of Virata in compliance with the king's order.

४.६४.३५

उत्तरा तु महार्हाणि विविधानि तनूनि च ।
प्रतिगृह्याभवत्प्रीता तानि वासांसि भामिनी ॥

४.६४.३६

मन्त्रयित्वा तु कौन्तेय उत्तरेण रहस्तदा ।
इतिकर्तव्यतां सर्वां राजन्यथ युधिष्ठिरे ॥

४.६४.३७

ततस्तथा तद्व्यदधाद्यथावत्पुरुषर्षभ ।
सह पुत्रेण मत्स्यस्य प्रहृष्टो भरतर्षभः ॥
