महाभारतम् — ११.१२

॥ अथ ११.१२ ॥

वैशंपायन उवाच ।

तत एनमुपातिष्ठञ्शौचार्थं परिचारकाः ।
कृतशौचं पुनश्चैनं प्रोवाच मधुसूदनः ॥

राजन्नधीता वेदास्ते शास्त्राणि विविधानि च ।
श्रुतानि च पुराणानि राजधर्माश्च केवलाः ॥

M N Dutt Vaishampayana said "Thereupon a few maid-servants came to the king for washing him. After he had been properly washed, Krishna again addressed him, saying. You are, O king, well read in the Vedas and various scriptures. You have heard all old histories, and everything relating to the duties of kings.

११.१२.३

एवं विद्वान्महाप्राज्ञ नाकार्षीर्वचनं तदा ।
पाण्डवानधिकाञ्जानन्बले शौर्ये च कौरव ॥

M N Dutt Although requested by us, you did not act according to the advice we offered, knowing that the Pandavas were superior to you and yours, O Kuru chief in strength and bravery!

११.१२.४

राजा हि यः स्थिरप्रज्ञः स्वयं दोषानवेक्षते ।
देशकालविभागं च परं श्रेयः स विन्दति ॥

M N Dutt The king who sees his own shortcomings and knows the distinctions of place and time, enjoys great prosperity.

११.१२.५

उच्यमानं च यः श्रेयो गृह्णीते नो हिताहिते ।
आपदं समनुप्राप्य स शोचत्यनये स्थितः ॥

M N Dutt That man, however, who, though advised by his well-wishers, does not follow their words, suffers miseries and is obliged to grieve for his evil policy.

११.१२.६

ततोऽन्यवृत्तमात्मानं समवेक्षस्व भारत ।
राजंस्त्वं ह्यविधेयात्मा दुर्योधनवशे स्थितः ॥

M N Dutt Follow a different course of life now, O Bharata! You did not control yourself but suffered yourself to be ruled by Duryodhana.

११.१२.७

आत्मापराधादायस्तस्तत्किं भीमं जिघांससि ।
तस्मात्संयच्छ कोपं त्वं स्वमनुस्मृत्य दुष्कृतम् ॥

M N Dutt That which has befallen you is due to your own fault. Why then do you seek to kill Bhima? Remembering your own folly govern your anger now.

११.१२.८

यस्तु तां स्पर्धया क्षुद्रः पाञ्चालीमानयत्सभाम् ।
स हतो भीमसेनेन वैरं प्रतिचिकीर्षता ॥

M N Dutt That mean wretch who had, from haughtiness caused the princess of Panchala to be brought into the court, has been justly killed by Bhimasena.

११.१२.९

आत्मनोऽतिक्रमं पश्य पुत्रस्य च दुरात्मनः ।
यदनागसि पाण्डूनां परित्यागः परंतप ॥

M N Dutt Look at your own evil deeds as also at those of your wicked-souled son. The sons of Pandu are perfectly innocent. Yet they have been treated most ruthlessly by you and him.“

११.१२.१०

एवमुक्तः स कृष्णेन सर्वं सत्यं जनाधिप ।
उवाच देवकीपुत्रं धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः ॥

M N Dutt After he had thus been told the truth by Krishna, O king, Dhritarashtra replied to Devaki's son, saying. 'It is just so, O you of mighty arms! What you say, O Madhava, is perfectly truth! It is father's affection that made me deviate from the path of righteousness.

११.१२.११

एवमेतन्महाबाहो यथा वदसि माधव ।
पुत्रस्नेहस्तु धर्मात्मन्धैर्यान्मां समचालयत् ॥

११.१२.१२

दिष्ट्या तु पुरुषव्याघ्रो बलवान्सत्यविक्रमः ।
त्वद्गुप्तो नागमत्कृष्ण भीमो बाह्वन्तरं मम ॥

M N Dutt By good luck, that foremost of men, the mighty Bhima of true prowess, protected by you, came not within my embrace.

११.१२.१३

इदानीं त्वहमेकाग्रो गतमन्युर्गतज्वरः ।
मध्यमं पाण्डवं वीरं स्प्रष्टुमिच्छामि केशव ॥

M N Dutt Now, I am free from wrath and fever. I wish eagerly, O Madhava to embrace that hero.

११.१२.१४

हतेषु पार्थिवेन्द्रेषु पुत्रेषु निहतेषु च ।
पाण्डुपुत्रेषु मे शर्म प्रीतिश्चाप्यवतिष्ठते ॥

M N Dutt When all the kings have been killed when by children are no more, my well-being and happiness depend upon the sons of Pandu.

११.१२.१५

ततः स भीमं च धनंजयं च
माद्र्याश्च पुत्रौ पुरुषप्रवीरौ ।
पस्पर्श गात्रैः प्ररुदन्सुगात्रा
नाश्वास्य कल्याणमुवाच चैनान् ॥

M N Dutt Having said so, the old king them embraced those beautiful princes, viz., Bhima and Dhananjaya and those tow foremost of men, viz., the two sons of Madri and wept, and comforted and blessed them.
