भट्टिकाव्यम् (रावणवधः) — षोडशः सर्गः | bhaṭṭikāvyam (rāvaṇavadhaḥ)

ततः प्ररुदितो राजा रक्षसां हतबान्धवः ।
किं करिष्यामि राज्येन सीतया किं करिष्यते ॥

Karandikar Then the King of the demons, whose kinsmen were slain, lamented, What shall I do with the kingdom ? What could be done with Sita ?

१६.२

अतिकाये हते वीरे प्रोत्सहिष्ये न जीवितुम् ।
ह्रेपयिष्यति कः शत्रून्केन जायिष्यते यमः ॥

Karandikar ''The warrior Atikaya having been killed, I shall not enthuse (myself) to live. Who will put the enemies to shame ? By whom will Yama be vanquished ?

१६.३

अतिकायाद्विना पाश्यं को वा छेत्स्यति वारुणम् ।
रावणं मंस्यते को वा स्वयम्भूः कस्य तोक्ष्यति ॥

Karandikar ''Or who but Atikaya will cut of the noose of Varuna ? Or who will respect Ravana ? Whom will Brahma please ?

१६.४

श्लाघिष्ये केन को बन्धून्नेष्यत्युन्नतिमुन्नतः ।
कः प्रेष्यति पित्न्काले कृत्वा कित्थष्यते न कः ॥

Karandikar By whom shall be praised? Who, himself pros perous, will lead his kinsmen to prosperity ? Who will gratify the manes at the proper time ? Who having achieved (something great) will not boast ?

१६.५

उद्यंस्यति हरिर्वज्रं विचरिष्यति निर्भयः ।
भोक्ष्यते यज्ञभागांश्च शूरमानं च वक्ष्यति ॥

Karandikar (Now) Indra will brandish the adamant and move

१६.६

रविस्तप्स्यति निःशङ्कं वास्यत्यनियतं मरुत् ।
निर्वर्त्स्यत्यृतुसंघातः स्वेच्छयेन्दुरुदेष्यति ॥

Karandikar The sun will shine fearlessly: the wind will blow unrestricted; the collection of seasons will end (i.e., They will occur singly); the moon will rise at its will.

१६.७

तीव्रं स्यन्दिष्यते मेघैरुग्रं वर्तिष्यते यमः ।
अतिकायस्य मरणे किं करिष्यन्ति नाऽन्यथा ॥

Karandikar ''The clouds will shower severely and Yama will behave ferociously. On Atikaya's death who and what will not act differently ?

१६.८

अन्मीलिष्यति चक्षुर्मे वृथा यद्विनयाऽऽगतम् ।
आज्ञालाभोन्मुखं नम्रं न द्रक्ष्यति नरान्तकम् ॥

Karandikar In vain will my eye open, my eye that will not per ceive the modest Narantaka, arrived in humility, with his face raised for receiving orders !

१६.९

धिङ्मां त्रिशिरसा नाऽहं सन्दर्शिष्येऽद्य यत्पुनः ।
घानिष्यन्ते द्विषः केन तस्मिन्पञ्चत्वमागते ॥

Karandikar ''Fie upon me, for I shall not be seen again today by (my son) Trisiras. He being slain, through whom will the enemies be got killed ?''

१६.१०

शत्रुभिर्निहते मत्ते द्रक्ष्येऽहं संयुगे सुखम् ।
युद्धोन्मत्ताद्विना शत्रून्समास्कन्त्स्यति को रणे ॥

Karandikar "Matta being killed by the enemies, I shall (now) be easily encountered (by my enemies) in battle. Who but Yuddhonmatta will march towards the enemies in the battle ?'

१६.११

आह्वास्यते विशङ्को मां योत्स्यमानः शतक्रतुः ।
प्रकल्प्स्यति च तस्याऽर्थो निकुम्बे दुर्हणे हते ॥

Karandikar Dauntless Indra, desirous of fighting, will challenge me; and Nikumbha, who was hard to kill, being killed, his (Indra's) objective will be achieved.

१६.१२

कल्पिष्यते हरेः प्रीतिर्लङ्का चोपहनिष्यते ।
देवान्तक त्वया त्यक्तो रिपोर्यास्यामि वश्यताम् ॥

Karandikar ''Indra's delight will occur (ensue) and Lanka will be devastated; the gods will arrive here and I shall get into the servitude of the enemy.

१६.१३

मरिष्यामि विजेष्ये वा हताश्चेत्तनया मम ।
हनिष्यामि रिपूंस्तूर्णं न जीविष्यामि दुःखितः ॥

Karandikar 'If my sons are killed, I shall die or vanquish ; I shall quickly kill the enemies ; (but) grieved, I shall not live.

१६.१४

स्मेष्यन्ते मुनयो देवाः कथयिष्यन्ति चाऽनिशम् ।
"दश-ग्रीवस्य दुर्-नीतेर्विनष्टं रक्षसां कुलम् ।
" ॥

Karandikar The sages will smile and the gods will declare, day night, 'The race of demons perished on account of the evil policies of Ravana.

१६.१५

केन सम्भावितं तातकुम्भकर्णस्य राघवः ।
रणे कर्त्स्यति गात्राणि मर्माणि च वितर्त्स्यति ॥

Karandikar By whom was it foreseen, Oh father, that Rama would sever the limbs and hurt the vitals of Kumbhakarna in battle ;

१६.१६

पतिष्यति क्षितौ भानुः पृथिवी तोलयिष्यते ।
नभस्वान्भङ्क्ष्यते व्योम मुष्टिभिस्ताडयिष्यते ॥

Karandikar that the sun will tumble down on the earth ; the earth will be hurled up; the wind will be shattered; the sky will be beaten up with fist-blows;

१६.१७

इन्द्रोः स्यन्दिष्यते वह्निः समुच्चोक्ष्यति सागरः ।
जलं धक्ष्यति तिग्मांशोः स्यन्त्यन्ति तमसां चयाः ॥

Karandikar —"that fire will ooze out of the moon; the ocean will dry up; water will burn; a mass of darkness will flow from the sun;

१६.१८

कुम्भकर्णो रणे पुंसा क्रुद्धः परिभविष्यते ।
संभावितानि नैतानि कदाचित्केनचिज्जने ॥

Karandikar -that the enraged Kumbhakarna will be overpowered in battle by a human male. These were never thought possible by anyone among the people.

१६.१९

कुम्भकर्णे हते लङ्का मारोक्ष्यन्ति प्लवङ्गमाः ।
दङ्क्ष्यन्ति राक्षसान्दृप्ता भङ्क्ष्यन्ति च ममाऽऽश्रमान् ॥

Karandikar 'Kumbhakarna being killed, the arrogant monkeys will invade Lanka, bite the demons and pull down (my) resorts.

१६.२०

चर्त्स्यन्ति बालवृद्धांश्च नर्त्स्यन्ति च मुदा युताः ।
तेन राक्षसमुख्येन विना तान्को निरोत्स्यति ॥

Karandikar And (they will) kill the children and old men and will dance, full of joy; who without that chief of demons, will restrain them ?

१६.२१

अमर्षो मे परः सीतां राघवः कामयिष्यते ।
च्युतराज्यात्सुखं तस्मात्किं किलाऽसाववाप्स्यति ॥

Karandikar My greatest anger (is that), Rama will make love to Sita ; what pleasure, indeed, will she derive from him who has lost his kingdom ?

१६.२२

मारयिष्यामि वैदेहीं खादयिश्यामि राक्षसैः ।
भूमौ वा निखनिष्यामि विध्वंसस्याऽस्य कारणम् ॥

Karandikar I shall kill the Videha Princess (and) have her devoured by the demons; or I shall ditch the cause of this devastation down into the ground.

१६.२३

नाऽनुरोत्स्ये जगल्लक्ष्मीं घटिष्ये जीवितुं न वा ।
न रंस्ये विषयैः शून्ये भवने बान्धवैरहम् ॥

Karandikar I shall not covet the riches of the world, nor shall I strive to live, nor shall I feel happy with sensuous objects in this palace which is devoid of kinsmen.

१६.२४

मोदिष्ये कस्य सौख्येऽहं को मे मोदिष्यते सुखे ।
आदेयाः किंकृते भोगाः कुम्भकऋण त्वया विना ॥

Karandikar Without you, Oh Kumbhakarna, in whose happiness shall I rejoice ? Who will exult in my happiness ? For what purpose should pleasures be acquired ?

१६.२५

याः सुहृत्सु विपन्नेषु मामुपैष्यन्ति संपदः ।
ताः किं मन्युक्षताऽऽभोगा न विपत्सु विपत्तयः ॥

Karandikar Is it not that, with their dimensions pruned by grief, the riches that will come to mewhile my (well-wishingfriends are dead, will be disastrous among calamities !

१६.२६

विनङ्क्ष्यति पुरी क्षिप्रं तूर्णमेष्यन्ति वानराः ।
असन्धित्सोस्तवेत्येतद्विभीषणसुभाषितम् ॥

Karandikar ''This was well said by Vibhisapa, The monkeys will soon arrive(this) capital of yours, who are not desirous of peace, will perish ?'

१६.२७

अर्थेन संभृता राज्ञा न भाषिष्यामहे वयम् ।
संयोत्स्यामहइत्येतत्प्रहस्तेन च भाषितम् ॥

Karandikar And this was said by Prahasta : 'Well nourished with money by the king, we shall not speak, (but) shall fight.

१६.२८

मानुषो नाम पत्काषी राजानं पुरुषाऽशिनाम् ।
योधयिष्यति संग्रामे दिव्याऽस्त्ररथदुर्जयम् ॥

Karandikar Indeed, a human male, treading on feet, will force the King of the cannibals, invincible on account of his divine missiles and chariot, to fight in battle !

१६.२९

सन्नत्स्याम्यथवा योद्धुं न कोष्ये सत्त्वहीनवत् ।
अद्य तप्र्स्यन्ति मांसाऽदा भूः पास्यत्यरिशोणितम् ॥

Karandikar Or I shall brace up for fighting (and) not bewait like a dis-spirited (person). Today the carnivorous animals will be gratified, the earth will drink blood.

१६.३०

आकर्क्ष्यामि यशः शत्रूनपनेष्यामि कर्मणा ।
अनुभाविष्यते शोको मैथिल्याऽद्य पतिक्षयात् ॥

Karandikar ''I shall wrench fame, repel the enemies with my activity. Toady Sita will be made to experience grief on account of the destruction of (her) husband.

१६.३१

मन्तूयिष्यति यक्षेन्द्रो वल्गूयिष्यति नो यमः ।
ग्लास्यन्त्यपतिपुत्राश्च वने वानरयोषितः ॥

Karandikar The lord of the Yaksas will be depressed; Yama will not rejoice; and the young wives of the monkeys will despond devoid of husbands and sons.

१६.३२

सुखं स्वप्स्यन्ति रक्षांसि भ्रमिष्यन्ति च निर्भयम् ।
न विक्रोक्ष्यन्ति राक्षस्यो नरांश्चाऽत्स्यन्ति हर्षिताः ॥

Karandikar The demons will sleep happily and move about fear lessly; the demonesses will not weep and be exalted that they will eat men.

१६.३३

प्राङ्मुहूर्तात्प्रभातेऽहं भविष्यामि ध्रुवं सुखी ।
आगामिनि ततः काले यो द्वितीयः क्षणोऽपरः ॥

Karandikar Before the (close of the first) mudurta in the morning. I shall definitely be happy (by killing Rama). Then during what (will be the next second moment (muhurta) in the time to come.

१६.३४

तत्र जेतुं गमिष्यामि त्रिदशेन्द्रं सहाऽमरम् ।
ततः परेण भूयोऽपि लङ्कामेष्याम्यमत्सरः ॥

Karandikar —'therein I shall proceed to vanquish the lord of the gods, along with the gods ; with the next morment (nuhurta) thereafter I shall once again return to Lanka, free of anger.''

१६.३५

तमेववादिनं मूढमिन्द्र्जित्समुपागतः ।
युयुत्सिष्येऽहमित्येवं वदन्रिपुभयंकरः ॥

Karandikar To the infatuated one speaking thus, came Indrajit, fearful to the enemy, saying thus, I wish to fight.

१६.३६

नाऽभिज्ञा ते महाराज जेष्यावः शक्रपालितम् ।
दृप्तदेवगुणाऽऽकीर्ण मावां सह सुराऽऽलयम् ॥

Karandikar ''Oh great King, don't you have the recollection that we two together conquered the abode of the gods protected by Indra and thronged by haughty hosts of gods ?

१६.३७

नाऽभिज्ञा ते सयक्षेन्द्रं भङ्क्ष्यावो यद्यमं बलात् ।
रत्नानि चाऽऽहरिष्यावः प्राप्स्यावश्च पुरीमिमाम् ॥

Karandikar Don't you have the recollection that we two forcibly broke up Yama, along with the lord of the Yaksas, and snatched away jewels and reached this city ?

१६.३८

एष पेक्ष्याम्यरीन्भूयो न शोचिष्यसि रावण ।
जगद्द्रक्ष्यसि नीराममवगाहिष्यसे दिशः ॥

Karandikar "Here, I shall crush the enemies; you will never lament again, Oh Ravana ; you will see the world bereft of Rama and pervade the quarters.

१६.३९

सहभृत्यः सुराऽऽवासे भयं भूयो विधास्यसि ।
प्रणंस्यत्यद्य देवेन्द्रस्त्वां वक्ष्यति स सन्नतिम् ॥

Karandikar "Along with dependents, you will again instil fear in the residence of the gods. Today the King of the gods will surrender and he will announce his salutation to you.

१६.४०

भेष्यते मुनिभिस्त्वत्तस्त्वमधिष्ठास्यसि द्विषः ।
ज्ञास्येऽहमद्य संग्रामे समस्तैः शूरमानिभिः ॥

Karandikar “Fright for you will be entertained by the sages ; you will overpower enemies. Today, in the battle, I shall be tested by all those who falsely regard themselves as brave.

१६.४१

ज्ञायिष्यन्ते मया चाऽद्य वीरंमन्या द्विषद्गणाः ।
गूहिष्यामि क्षितिं कृत्तै रद्य गात्रैर्वनाकसाम् ॥

Karandikar "And those hosts of enemies, who falsely feel brave will be tested by me, today. I shall cover the earth today with the severed limbs of the forest-dwellers.

१६.४२

आरोक्ष्यामि युगान्त-वारिद-घटा- संघट्ट-धीर-ध्वनिं निर्यास्यन्रथमच्छ्रित-ध्वज-धनुः- खड्ग-प्रभा-भासुरम् ।
श्रोष्यस्यद्य विकीर्ण-वृक्ण-विमुख- व्यापन्न-शत्रौ रणे तृप्तांश्छोणित-शोण-भीषणमुखान्क्रव्याऽशिनः क्रोशतः ।
" ॥

Karandikar “Marching out, I shall mount a chariot which will produce a deep sound like that of the collision of banks of clouds at the end of the aeon and which will be lustrous with the radiance of the upraised flag, bow and sword. Today you shall hear the yelling of carnivorous beings who (will be) satiated on the battered and slain enemies scattered face downwards on the battlefield and whose faces will be red and ferocious with blood. "
